After 40K miles here at the 5th gear playground we found the Land Rover needed $5K worth of repairs because the British failed to make a long lasting engine.

I own a Subaru Forester, an 05 model. I think its a great car but I wont deny the fact that at times it feels and seems fragile. Quick car and wonderful to drive but it just dosnt feel all that well built.
What a blot for 5th Gear. Had a Freelander before switching to Subaru. Old Forester, then Tribeca and now the new Forester. I agree that the auto gearbox isn't great - had one in my first Forester. Now I have a diesel engine with a manual gearbox - Brilliant!!! Similar to the Freelander in softer off-road applications and better as the going gets tougher. Much better than this biased reporting tried to show. Simply a great value for money vehicle with a good gearbox and a bulletproof engine.

Yesterday we had a Forester meeting and bumped into a Land Rover meeting in a very remote area. They were like... "What are these doing here", we just drove past them. Not only that but we were doing 70-80mph on bendy roads with big grins on our faces. No point of comparing them onroad really because Forester will just murder any Freelander

My best friend's Freelander let him down 4 (four) times last winter. Not to mention taking it to the nearby garage every month with different problems. He sold it last month because he just couldn't cope with it anymore. Having unreliable car with 2 little kids is not the best idea.

The use of camera angles, soundtrack and script was geared to make the Subaru look inferior. Note how with the Freelander they capture the sound of its undercarriage knocking from the outside. With the forester they captured the audio from the inside which (by virtue of acoustics) makes it sound worse! also the Scooby seemed to fare equally well in all the tests. Sad that fifth Gear has to resort to such antics to prove and English car better. Your credibility just went down the crapper guys!

Fith gear has always had a hatred for Subaru. In one review of the Impreza WRX STi they called it a subpar and also too hard to drive. Yah sure that's why STi is driven by a lot of pro Rally and also a lot of amateur rally-well that's why there is ALWAYS an STi in every rally competition. Thats also why Subaru's have higher customer satisfaction, durability, resale values, and safety, not just in a few countries but around the world. There is no doubt 5th gear hates Subaru.

Yeah this assclown is comparing apples to oranges in a way. Yeah sure they're both all wheel drive SUV's, but the Land Rover Starts at about 10,000$ more than the Subaru. The subaru did everything it was supposed to. They just filmed it in a manner that would make it look bad. I didn't see any fluid coming out the bottom after the rock test. It also seemed to climb the hill just fine.

Why am I not surprised that the LR won considering it was a UK review ! I have yet to see a review which didn't favour the Brit version over a superior alternative eg Jaguar XF-R better than an M5 ? Wow! really i live in the caribbean, i've driven the land rover and the subaru let me tell the subaru is awsome i love foresters from the first set to the curent ones. Car testers never really factor in reliability. What is the point of having a super off-road vehicle if they break down all the time. My rich friends have all bought the flagship Landrover Rangerovers and they all have had numerous problems with them. If British engineering was so good than the Germans would not be making the guts of Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Mini.
@georgio941 Well, their job is to determine how well a car serves its purpose, and whether or not it's provides good value for the money. Though Top Gear does do their surveys which then determines customer satisfaction, and they do also make the occasional comment on a given car's or car maker's reputation for reliability or lack there of.

They are totally biased though towards British cars and they always bash American cars but honestly I think both the British and American cars are lousy. If I were spending less than 30k I would by Japanese hands down. Anything above that and I would go German and of course the Italians make the best supercars. That is my take on it.
The foresters in Europe are bad, instead of 2.5 H4's in the U.S. they use 2.0's with around 140 hp. The suspension also must be different because my dad has a U.S. spec forester 2.5x and it never rolls around. Over all the Land Rover is still better as far as off road, luxury, and reliability. The forester U.S. spec still has better handling, and acceleration. I'll still take the Land Rover though. I could see why this european forester was terrible.

The 2 small SUV's seemed to preform about the same to me....same level of scraping on the rocks....same level of climbing up the hill. It seems to me the tester had a chip on his Britt shoulder and favored the way over priced land rover because it's an English company. Of corse most of them exept CR-V and RAV-4 (in my opinion) are more comfortable in some things such as, seats, base equipment etc. It's a question of choice. But I talking about handling. For example if you'll do the 8 figure on the road or some kind of another things, to test the suspension and handling, FORESTER will do it much, much, much, better than the others.
I agree that the automatic gear box on Forester is shit on the 2.0 engine. But if you have manual transmission on it, it will be much better and more economical if we talking about fuel rate. But i disagree about the handling...Forester has the best handling i've ever driven on SUV's*.The suspension is more rigid than the Land Rover has, but try to compare this cars on the road and you'll feel the difference. Forester is like WRX STI of the SUV's. And don't forget about the price))

Yeah this assclown is comparing apples to oranges in a way. Yeah sure they're both all wheel drive SUV's, but the Land Rover Starts at about 10,000$ more than the Subaru. The subaru did everything it was supposed to. They just filmed it in a manner that would make it look bad. I didn't see any fluid coming out the bottom after the rock test. It also seemed to climb the hill just fine.

Why am I not surprised that the LR won considering it was a UK review ! I have yet to see a review which didn't favour the Brit version over a superior alternative eg Jaguar XF-R better than an M5 ? Yeah right. Plus the reliability and durability if a LR is never discussed simply because , in general they aren't.
Subaru s definitely the winner despite this absurd comparison.

The best SUV's are Japan suv's - Toyota RAV4 , Forester, Honda CR-V ..

Car testers never really factor in reliability. What is the point of having a super off-road vehicle if they break down all the time. My rich friends have all bought the flagship Landrover Rangerovers and they all have had numerous problems with them. If British engineering was so good than the Germans would not be making the guts of Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Mini.

Though Top Gear does do their surveys which then determines customer satisfaction, and they do also make the occasional comment on a given car's or car maker's reputation for reliability or lack there of.

They are totally biased though towards British cars and they always bash American cars but honestly I think both the British and American cars are lousy. If I were spending less than 30k I would by Japanese hands down. Anything above that and I would go German and of course the Italians make the best supercars. That is my take on it.

2- compared suv's in completely different price ranges...Fail. Theres about 15000$ difference between the two. Thats enormous.

The foresters in Europe are bad, instead of 2.5 H4's in the U.S. they use 2.0's with around 140 hp. The suspension also must be different because my dad has a U.S. spec forester 2.5x and it never rolls around. Over all the Land Rover is still better as far as off road, luxury, and reliability. The forester U.S. spec still has better handling, and acceleration. I'll still take the Land Rover though. I could see why this european forester was terrible.

The 2 small SUV's seemed to preform about the same to me....same level of scraping on the rocks....same level of climbing up the hill. It seems to me the tester had a chip on his Britt shoulder and favored the way over priced land rover because it's an English company. Sorry but just because a car is made in the country you live in doesn't automatically make it better or justify a much higher price. What a knob.

From all cars without low gear available in market Freelander is capable of crazy stuff far off roads. I have to agree, is over priced comparing to german high quality SUVs, but the smooth of ride and confort on and offroad is impressive. I own a really old Freelander and still impressive and better than a new Subaru!

in some curves i felt the ESP but the forester in front of me looked like it was having no problems

*I've tested RAV4, X-TRAIL, CR-V, CHEVY CAPTIVA, OUTLANDER XL, FREELANDER and TIGUAN.
Of corse most of them exept CR-V and RAV-4 (in my opinion) are more comfortable in some things such as, seats, base equipment etc. It's a question of choice. But I talking about handling. For example if you'll do the 8 figure on the road or some kind of another things, to test the suspension and handling, FORESTER will do it much, much, much, better than the others.

I agree that the automatic gear box on Forester is shit on the 2.0 engine. But if you have manual transmission on it, it will be much better and more economical if we talking about fuel rate. But i disagree about the handling...Forester has the best handling i've ever driven on SUV's*.The suspension is more rigid than the Land Rover has, but try to compare this cars on the road and you'll feel the difference. Forester is like WRX STI of the SUV's. And don't forget about the price))
