I expect this has already been mentioned, but this episode has been spoofed into a video called 'Freudian Catchphrase'. It's only 45 seconds long and there's a couple of laughs to be had.
(comment continued) I know for a fact, now, this episode definitely aired at night (though, as I keep saying, not as part of the *watershed*) on Saturday October the 24th 1992 (and was the last *TVS* episode; all *new* Catchphrase episodes after *this* one were the new *Carlton* series episodes; the *first* was the 'Mabel VS Len' episode aired at night, though not as part of the *watershed*, on Friday September the 30th 1994).
If Tina's big day is before October the 24th, she was forty when this episode aired. Andrew (if his big day is before October the 24th) was thirty-two when he was on this episode.
No *wonder* did Tina beat him if he accidentally buzzed *before* the bell when it came to the 'Flashback' catchphrase (she still, though, didn't win the *super* catchphrase).

I remember two other episodes from this series but only by a few details

Just wondering does anyone else know these two episodes?

Hi all. I have just found this video of me and Andrew ...... oh the embarrassment lol. Just to clear a few points up for you all; 1) there were four shows filmed in one day, 2) this episode was filmed in the late summer of 1991 but aired much later due to the changing of hands of TVS/Carlton 3) yes Roy Walker really was a nice guy and 4) just like everyone else, I used to sit at home shouting at the telly because I couldn't believe that the contestants didn't seem to know the answer.
@MrBacktothenineties This episode wasn't shown in 1993; it was shown in 1992. There was NO Catchphrase in 1993. This was even the last episode of the TVS version.
@obtyropil Yes; I personally sort of wish that but I can't say what episode I like the MOST since users HATED it when I posted that comment on these videos billions of times.

@AlphaOmegaAWH Exactly - the straw was on the right, not at the end - you could keep moving the cup round to a different angle and then a different straw would be the ''final'' one, so I don't see how they can call that the ''final'' straw. I know it's just meant to be a fun game, but I felt it wasn't accurate. =)
im 17 now but when i was much younger i used to watch this show with my nan, i used to love then i gained a VERY bad fear of my.chips after watching an episode with him where the catchphrase was "dont lose your head" or something along those lines, it was very bad i would have nightmares etc and not want to be in a room on my own i grew out of it i guess, but even now i still get shivers down my spine watching it its weird lol
The US Catch Phrase had even more primitive graphics. I compared the graphics of the catchphrases, and it seems like the UK was decades more high-tech in the mid-80s.

I personally think it's a GOOD thing Challenge no longer repeats the 1986-1992 TVS series episodes and now only repeats the 1994-1999 Carlton episodes.

We all have our own opinions, yes. You like that series better and I like this one better. I do have respect, however, for the 1994 series, since that is the series done in some ITV games website I've been on, where Catchphrase as an online game is revived in the 1994 series.
Fellow American oldzac87, I'm with you all the way! I love this game as much as you do and if my wish of hosting a game show came true, I'd bring it back.
idak72, do you or anyone you know have a full episode of Catchphrase here in the United States? I've been dying to see our version that unfortunately had only a 13-week run, while it ran almost forever in the UK.
I want those outlaw producers arrested and the show back on the air, both in the UK and my country, the USA! It is a rotten crime to makeover the set like that just because the new millenium started in 2000! If I were the Karate Kat (he was my favorite in cartoons), I'd kick their butts right now!

Even though I prefer the 1994-1999 Carlton version of this show to THIS version distributed by Television South since Sunday the 12th of January 1986 until October 1992.
All three versions are with ITV Yorkshire in Leeds, although the TVS versions are legally the property of Disney or Fox (the TVS archive is splintered with a number of different owners)
The Roy Walker/Carlton and Crap catchphrase/Carlton versions are at ITV Yorkshire and are legally the property of Granada Media Group (ITVplc)

I'm not surprised the sound is very poor, the sound was very poor in the 1986-1992 Television South era of Catchphrase; the sound was MUCH better improved in the 1994-1999 when the show was now made by Carlton / Action Time.
Probably because when it was at TVS. They used ageing studio equipment and recorded it on 1" analogue Panasonic tape. When it was moved to Carlton, they used digital mikes and cameras, slightly modified sets and used D3 digital casettes.

Tina IS a stupid woman; I wish someone could upload and an episode featuring a bearded and bespectacled man called Trevor whose opponent I think was Catherine; I always preferred the 1994 Carlton series to this 1986 series by TVS.
Oh, I noticed a few guys mentioned this great contestant named Trevor. He's not a user or anything. But I noticed a trader named Ryan Rinkerman has it.
oh, here we go with trevor and catherine for the millionth time...
and for heaven's sake, tina is NOT stupid - hopeless guesses occurred all the time on catchphrase, and contestants who came up with them weren't necessarily stupid, unless of course they kept doing it
Aaah brilliant! This program is part of fond memories of my childhood - Saturdays with Dad's Army and Catchphrase and Blind Date, but Catchphrase was always my fave. Great that someone's uploading episodes. More please! :D
How can this be from 1993 as TVS finished in 1992 and I checked wikipedia about Catchphrase and it was made by TVS from 1986 to 1992. As Carlton took over from 1994 to 1998.
actually carlton had thames tv. meridian bought tvs. then disney bought the rights for the programmes that was originally on tvs. so this episode is certainly after tvs and during the talks with disney
yeah, MADE until 1992. That doesn't mean transmitted does it?
So it could have been *transmitted* on TVS' behalf by Meridian (who replaced them) or Scottish (who seemed to take on most of TVS' programming). Or maybe even bought by Action Time who then sold them onto Carlton, who took the later Roy Walker version.
Carlton wouldn't distribute the tapes to the other ITV regions. That's not the way it worked. If one ITV region was going to screen a programme from another ITV region, then that ITV region would connect up directly to the video recorder playing the tape in the other ITV region. And the same goes for the programmes that had varied dates and times in the different ITV regions.

This episode IS 1992. Either idak72 made a mistake when he titled the video as '1993 episode' or it was repeated in that year when Thames was changed to Carlton and TVS couldn't keep up its production.
Who remembers that brief time Mark Curry presented he was worst than Nick Weir Roy Walker was the best at this I was very young when this one came out and it brings back memories upload more please.
I think Nick Weir AND Mark Curry were both EQUALLY as bad as EACH OTHER. Stupid Phil Jupitus MADE poor Roy leave just for revamping the show for the millennium. Such a stupid excuse.
That's even why the show was AXED since 2002, since people were complaining it was nowhere near as good without Roy Walker.
Couldn't have said it better myself, shermanvermin76! As Leo the Patriotic Lion, I'd strike up the band in your honor, if I had one, of course; I was greatly inspired by Sousa.
When you say "Yankee," you mean America today, don't you? Some call us Yankees when refering to our civil war of 1861-65, which was used by the soldiers of the North. I'm not being critical, just checking.
One Italian YouTube user highly criticized me for my comments and called me a Yankee. I am alerting you of this since I am easily insulted if taken out of context.
Okay. I am not insulted. I do agree with you in saying we should learn from Roy's shows and bring Catchphrase back. It's bad enough, some have said, we keep updating shows. Our Wheel of Fortune now offers $1 million in an attempt to draw people away from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? That's my neighbors opinion, but since he doesn't have an account, don't bother getting angry at him if you are angry at him at all.
1994 was MY favourite series too, featuring a contestant who makes it to the super catchphrase - Trevor. (I even prefer the Trevor VS Catherine episode to the snake charmer episode and even the 1998 episode).
I like the 1994 series because it was MY period of Catchophrase. Those red/blue maze opening titles, the slightly re-designed set, the more expensive-looking blue/pink neon tube set, the more lavish but not OTT computer graphics (which, although I accept they looked good at the time, the previous ones are just too bad today and the later ones (post 2000) just went too far and lost the character of the low-processor-looking CGI animations)
Which one was worse: him or the guy who fell down the stairs and broke his leg - whatever his name was - in your opinion? IMO, it was the guy who fell down the stairs.
Hey, is it just me, or do the Catchphrases in series 1 have better music?

shermanvermin76 3 years ago
Most likely.

Room for improvement. I never would have guessed that one.

It's no wonder it took Tina and Andrew ages to guess it (even though Andrew did).
I bet Trevor is better at guessing bonus catchphrases in an episode in the 1994 series which was MUCH better than THIS series.
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
We all have our own opinions, yes. You like that series better and I like this one better. I do have respect, however, for the 1994 series, since that is the series done in some ITV games website I've been on, where Catchphrase as an online game is revived in the 1994 series.
LeothePatrioticLion 2 years ago
i have lost count of how many times u have said that the 1994-9 carlton version is better than the TVS version...
DON'T u think once or twice is enough instead of infinity times???

I wish this show would get another chance here in the states. This is a great game.

Fellow American oldzac87, I'm with you all the way! I love this game as much as you do and if my wish of hosting a game show came true, I'd bring it back.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
I salute you and I strike up the band in your honor! That's my famous figure of speech, of course.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
idak72, do you or anyone you know have a full episode of Catchphrase here in the United States? I've been dying to see our version that unfortunately had only a 13-week run, while it ran almost forever in the UK.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
Oops. Sorry. I found episodes of the US show. thewhammy813, or whatever the number is, posted episodes.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
16 years from 1986 - 2002, although the show had a complete makeover in 2000 which killed it off 2 years later!!!
AidanLunn 3 years ago
I want those outlaw producers arrested and the show back on the air, both in the UK and my country, the USA! It is a rotten crime to makeover the set like that just because the new millenium started in 2000! If I were the Karate Kat (he was my favorite in cartoons), I'd kick their butts right now!
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
We need to bring things like this back on TV. It would be alot better than those stupid reality shows we have today

Even though I prefer the 1994-1999 Carlton version of this show to THIS version distributed by Television South since Sunday the 12th of January 1986 until October 1992.
shermanvermin76 3 years ago
All three versions are with ITV Yorkshire in Leeds, although the TVS versions are legally the property of Disney or Fox (the TVS archive is splintered with a number of different owners)
The Roy Walker/Carlton and Crap catchphrase/Carlton versions are at ITV Yorkshire and are legally the property of Granada Media Group (ITVplc)

does anyone av a link to the 1994 intro? (not the family one) its a bit different to this.

I'm not surprised the sound is very poor, the sound was very poor in the 1986-1992 Television South era of Catchphrase; the sound was MUCH better improved in the 1994-1999 when the show was now made by Carlton / Action Time.
shermanvermin76 3 years ago
Probably because when it was at TVS. They used ageing studio equipment and recorded it on 1" analogue Panasonic tape. When it was moved to Carlton, they used digital mikes and cameras, slightly modified sets and used D3 digital casettes.
AidanLunn 3 years ago 2
I would love a copy of this and the Family edition on DVD.

Tina IS a stupid woman; I wish someone could upload and an episode featuring a bearded and bespectacled man called Trevor whose opponent I think was Catherine; I always preferred the 1994 Carlton series to this 1986 series by TVS.
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
The one with Trevor I saw is avaliable in a trading site. As soon as the guy opens again, I'll get it.
But if you want good players, look at Sean from the snake charmer epsiode
Hondo20132 2 years ago
Who was this guy? Was he a YouTube user?
Are you saying he's going to upload it on YouTube?! (Inevitably; I do want the WHOLE episode, where it'll be a three parter)
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
Oh, I noticed a few guys mentioned this great contestant named Trevor. He's not a user or anything. But I noticed a trader named Ryan Rinkerman has it.
Hondo20132 2 years ago
Is there a way of him uploading the episode here? If so, I can wait; Rome wasn't built in a day and he has a life.
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
Ryan Rinkerman isn't a member here.
Hondo20132 2 years ago
Then how can I get it?
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
oh, here we go with trevor and catherine for the millionth time...
and for heaven's sake, tina is NOT stupid - hopeless guesses occurred all the time on catchphrase, and contestants who came up with them weren't necessarily stupid, unless of course they kept doing it
timmyt258 2 years ago
Aaah brilliant! This program is part of fond memories of my childhood - Saturdays with Dad's Army and Catchphrase and Blind Date, but Catchphrase was always my fave. Great that someone's uploading episodes. More please! :D
LostSpaniardCJ 3 years ago 2
Hi idak72
Cheers for uploading the TVS version of Catchphrase.
Please may I ask what was the copyright year at the end of this episode as it got cut off towards the end.
Backintime90stv 3 years ago 4
I hate to be the one telling you this, but the year is 1993. Besides, that year is in the title.

It's wrong in the title; it should say '1992 episode'.
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
Oops. My bad.
LeothePatrioticLion 2 years ago
How can this be from 1993 as TVS finished in 1992 and I checked wikipedia about Catchphrase and it was made by TVS from 1986 to 1992. As Carlton took over from 1994 to 1998.
everyone06 3 years ago

EvilToaster77 3 years ago
actually carlton had thames tv. meridian bought tvs. then disney bought the rights for the programmes that was originally on tvs. so this episode is certainly after tvs and during the talks with disney
m230690 3 years ago
Wikipedia's SOMETIMES right; just don't ALWAYS trust Wikipedia.
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
yeah, MADE until 1992.
AidanLunn 3 years ago 2
good point but action time are an independent so carlton would of bought the shows and then let other itv stations have the recordings
m230690 3 years ago
Carlton wouldn't distribute the tapes to the other ITV regions. That's not the way it worked. If one ITV region was going to screen a programme from another ITV region, then that ITV region would connect up directly to the video recorder playing the tape in the other ITV region. And the same goes for the programmes that had varied dates and times in the different ITV regions.

This episode IS 1992. Either idak72 made a mistake when he titled the video as '1993 episode' or it was repeated in that year when Thames was changed to Carlton and TVS couldn't keep up its production.
shermanvermin76 2 years ago
Ah, but this episode could have had its first screening in this ITV region in 1993!!! Remember, the ITV regions were like that.
Tyne Tees had to skip *150* episodes of Blockbusters in order to catch up with Yorkshire TV when they both merged in 1992!

Actually Carlton took over from 1994 to 1999. 1999, not 1998, was the last year Roy Walker presented Catchphrase.

Carlton also made the 2000-2002 version. Action time made ALL episodes of the UK catchphrase.

Who remembers that brief time Mark Curry presented he was worst than Nick Weir Roy Walker was the best at this I was very young when this one came out and it brings back memories upload more please.

I did. He sucked.
Melee2008Brawl 3 years ago
Yes, he did!

i vaiguely remember it, cant rmeember if he was worse than Nick Weir though. I dont wanna think how bad he must have been if he was worse than him.
bring back catchphrase, bring back roy walker
cxx66 3 years ago 3
cxx66, I salute you!
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
I think Nick Weir AND Mark Curry were both EQUALLY as bad as EACH OTHER. Stupid Phil Jupitus MADE poor Roy leave just for revamping the show for the millennium. Such a stupid excuse.
That's even why the show was AXED since 2002, since people were complaining it was nowhere near as good without Roy Walker.
shermanvermin76 3 years ago 2
Couldn't have said it better myself, shermanvermin76! As Leo the Patriotic Lion, I'd strike up the band in your honor, if I had one, of course; I was greatly inspired by Sousa.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
Maybe Yankee TV ought to learn from the British Roy Walker episodes before they brought it back!
AidanLunn 3 years ago
When you say "Yankee," you mean America today, don't you? Some call us Yankees when refering to our civil war of 1861-65, which was used by the soldiers of the North. I'm not being critical, just checking.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
One Italian YouTube user highly criticized me for my comments and called me a Yankee. I am alerting you of this since I am easily insulted if taken out of context.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
Yes I do. :)
AidanLunn 3 years ago
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
After this series they changed the theme tune and identity which was better. 1994 was my favourite series espically some familiar snake.
everyone06 3 years ago
Here comes the bonus!
HeyArnoldsspleen 3 years ago
You're probably thinking of the catchphrase "Snake Charmer." What a LOL catchphrase that was.
LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
1994 was MY favourite series too, featuring a contestant who makes it to the super catchphrase - Trevor. (I even prefer the Trevor VS Catherine episode to the snake charmer episode and even the 1998 episode).
I never liked THIS 1986 series as much as 1994.

LeothePatrioticLion 3 years ago
The guy who fell down the stairs was that CRETIN Nick Weir. Him AND Mark Curry were just EQUALLY as bad as each OTHER.
What's more, Nick Weir never even bothers to give his DOB online. What's to like about him THERE?!
