Surely it is too fast for Chopin, he didn't like nothing too slow or too fast, there are histories of him yelling at his students who played the octaves part too fast. In my humble opinion Kissin put the technique before the music. Rubinstein said in one of his masterclasses when a pianist was playing Chopin too fast and by thwacks, he said he cudn't play Chopin like that, maybe Liszt.
good god! The brain that man must have had to compose that piece of music. I admire anyone who can translate those notes into sound on a piano--I sure can't.
@newFranzFerencLiszt Oh, of course! I agree! =) If I didn't know that, I wouldn't have enough appreciation for Classical, Romantic, Baroque, etc. piano.
There was a version of the Heroic by Kissin which was live in Switzerland, that was a much more mature interpretation than this one, and also my favorite. Anyway, this version is amazing, I love this polonaise played this way, I mean, with a lot of pedal and emphasizing the main melody rather than the complex left hand...
it's the first version of the polonaise heroic that i heard and felt that the notes are flowing, the music is flowing. other performances give me the sence of a car that runs on the road with gravel...it's just my personal taste, though..horowitz and rubinstein are some of the greatest pianists , nobody doubts that!!
hmm good but not great. He doesn't take enough time to rest, he doesn't give enough space to the piece. But thats just my viewpoint. I prefer Rubinstein for Chopin.
I love how contrasting Chopin's style can be. He presents us with his dramatic, sharp chords like in this piece, yet in other pieces he writes gentle, solemn melodies with quiet accompaniment. Chopin is the greatest composer who ever lived on this Earth! May his legacy last forever!
Wow... this is KE? I actually dont care for this performance at all...I usually love his performances. 0:21-0:24 WAAAAAAAY too fast, and the tonic/dominant jumps in left hand need more staccato... way too much pedal... Even the accents are bad >< are we sure this is kissin? I hate to say it but after listening to the whoel thing? This performance is bad... Excellent technical skills but man the beauty of this piece is being shot with overpower and too much speed. Is this a performer piano???
As amazing as this piece was played by Kissin, how about the amazing skill of Chopin to write this masterpiece? Bravo to both of them but still Chopin's compositional artistry is incredible!
My heart skips a beat when I listen to Kissin. But then, to be able to write something this great . . . I'd give anything to be able to hear Chopin play this.
This, I think, doesn't sound very good, I much prefer Horowitz's interpretation, this, there's no sense of climax, no tension, I just don't like it...
@December10th2010 almost ALL of the modern recordings are edited...i think that live, neither Kissin nor Argerich will play this perfectly. I can't feel humanity in this recordings.
@Erikk91 - I did not know that, thank you. It puts a different perspective on recorded pieces. I assume it's edited at the discretion of the artist, and not someone in a studio simply making adjustments to suit his own taste. lol I knew editing was done on mistakes, but not the interpretation. Hmm...I was wondering how he played those beginning passages with so much POWER. Now I know. I bet he couldn't do that live. I tried so hard to get that sound. How naive of me. lol
@December10th2010 the way it sounds so powerful is not enhance by a computer. With the correct technique its not a problem getting the phrasing and heaviness that you want. Editing is more about stitching together the best takes of each section so that there wont be mistakes and such, unless I am misinformed
@December10th2010 Editing is not done to the interpretation. A virtuoso such as Kissin can pack a lot of thunder into his playing especially when performing on an 11-foot Steinway and Sons concert grand. Franz Liszt was described to play with so much power that the seats of the concert goers would vibrate with sound.
@ClassicalScores IF you play octaves in the bass range of the piano, that's bound to happen lol... i imagine that retelling was most likely a little bit hysterical
I remember struggling through this piece when I was twelve years old. My fingers were still too small on my right hand and too big on my left to hit the octaves perfectly. I appreciate seeing those notes along with the musical notes. I never played it that fast either. Thank you Classical Scores!
So strong yet so elegant...

Brilliant.
For you Monty Python fans out there, the song "Oliver Cromwell" that they sing has this as the accompaniment/melody. Hilarious and still brilliant.

This simply is one of the most brilliant pieces of classical music ever written.
Kissin is phenomenonal - along with other greats who have served this music
so intelligently and with sheer beauty. It doesn't get much better. Perfection.

This was the very first piece of music I ever loved. My own dreams
of a life of music couldn't come true. Hearing the sheer beauty and
majesty this piece offers brings me back to days when it made me cry. ,
It gave me hope as a child in an alcoholic home. And, 67 years later, it
still gives me the exact same thrill and inspiration it did then. This is a
masterpiece that still gives me chills and can make me cry. Thanks for posting.
