As far as game design goes, going through anything would be too powerful in a race. You'd just go in a straight line towards the finish.

Of course, you could explain it away in saying that Mario is not used to being a Boo and that he only knows how to go through those glass walls.

Overhazard, for the whole 'Spooky Speedster with a helmet' thing, it's probably to keep wind and stuff out of his eyes. Also, I never knew that you could spin in the skull's eyes to get star bits.

When you clear a mission for the first time, the Star will be solid and gold. After you clear that mission and you go for it again, the Star will be clear.

It's to tell you that this Star won't count towards your total.

Yes, you'll need to get 120 Stars. Then, you head to Bowser's Galaxy Reactor again and beat Bowser again to get Luigi.
