  • How Jeff Tweedy creates this arrangement is insane. Nels Cline is flawless honestly one of the best. And how awesome would it be to be walking down the street and look in a window and see Nels rockin' it out? hahahaha

  • this is mind blowing.

  • I just really, really love this...

  • Dammit still waiting for the next two Burn To Shines!!!!

  • This song gives me eargasms.

  • rewind 3:57

  • incredible performance. flawless.

  • this is sooooo good

  • you guys are perfect

  • How lucky are Wilco to have ended up with Nels Cline in their band? As if they weren't a brilliant enough band before they recruited him.

  • I have to know where to get this recording, anyone?

  • Just a great video.. thanks for sharing.

  • there so damn many of them crammed in that nook

  • wow NELS is unbelievable, great song

  • I love the transition at 3:57. It just blows your mind.

  • Saw Wilco last night, still reeling. They blew everyone's fuckin mind. Amazing.

  • I love how the band is all set up in someone's living room, instead of a stage. You can even see the lawn and street hrough the windows. Super cool.

  • @tonebenderx Every band should go back to their roots at some point and play in a basement, garage, living room, whatever :D

  • perfection

  • This is one on my favorite Wilco songs of all time and this version is incredible. One of the most underrated aspects of Wilco is the the subtle fills of their keyboard work. The piano progressions at 1:28 and again at 1:38 are so beautiful....they get me everytime. The song is pretty, playful and in some way sad because of the interplay between the keyboards and the guitars. Absolutely brilliant! I'm going to see them on march 22. I can't wait!

  • This was the first song by Wilco I listened to. I really love it.

    Awesome!!!

  • Nels Cline is awesome, but I love Ghost is Born the most for it being the only wilco album with Jeff Tweedy's lead guitar work. To be perfectly honest I would choose a Tweedy solo over a Cline solo any day, they are just so much more tasteful. Look at Hell is Chrome, that solo is like 6 notes and some abstract electric overtones, but one of my favorite moments on the album.

  • Jeff's solos are more mysterious and have much more depth and exploration. Nels' solos have alot of feeling and energy. Both are different and great, but you're right. I prefer Jeff's solos (:

  • I took your suggestion on "hell is chrome" . The last few days I've sort of re-discovered Wilco & Son Volt and some Uncle Tupelo. I really enjoyed that period of my life, so much shit on youtube, etc.. that takes you 'back in the day'. You've prob already listened/seen it, but the guitar work on Sounstage version of "Handshake drugs" is pretty fuckin' cool as well, Love, peace & hair grease...

  • your right good sir. Hell is Chrome has a beautiful solo, but its quite obvious that Nels Cline is one of the most talented guitarists ever, just as is their drummer. its just that they never get the chance to show off as Tweedy does his things his way. and thats the only way in Wilco.

  • Haha, very true.

  • During their live show I found that both Nels and the drummer got to showcase their talent quite a bit... the entire band was insanely impressive.

  • i guess they can do the whole live thing very well. I think Tweedy is more into making records, and nels and drummer dude (forgotten name! lol) are into doing the live thing.

  • I love this song...I hope that Wilco will visit Croatia someday...Soon,i hope...

  • just to reiterate, WOW.

  • Wow this song just blows me away. I thought i was on the fence on my fav wilco song, but nope, this is by far my favorite.

  • genius

  • He sings just like you!!

  • Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy is just an unbeatable combo. This song especially lets this talent shine through.

  • I'm curious where this location is in Chicago. I've seen videos of several other bands playing in this same room. Tortoise for example.

Wilco is amazing....I think these guys are so underrated. This is one of my favorites of theirs. Thanks for posting.

  • In this Burn to Shine DVD series, they gather artists to play in a house that is going to be torn down before it is. They all play a song, one take, and some shots are interspersed with the house being torn down. You were certainly correct about Tortoise, they are the last video on this DVD.

  • Thanks for replying to me. I'm sorry I took so long to respond. I actually did some research after I had posted the question and found out all about. Thanks again though for taking the time to explain.

  • agreed with the last comment

  • In my opinion, one of the most beautiful Wilco songs ever. The dynamics of this song just blow me away, and the quiet in the middle followed by the crescendo after make my heart soar.

  • @NorthWriter , couldnt agree more pal.

  • oh btw my comment was to..

    fireeyedb0y lol

  • I WANT NELS" hands

  • Whats with the hole in the ceiling? The room looks freshly painted, but they leave the hole in the ceiling? I guess if I were an artist I might understand.

  • the burn to shine series features bands playing in houses that are going to be torn down shortly after!

  • When I die I hope I float on a cloud of this music forever.

  • that room is sweet

  • ummmmmmmmmm orgasmic! How else can i describe this?

  • hmmm....I've watched a bunch of stuff from these guys....saw them on PBS last night. The muscicianship is awesome...i struggle a lot with his voice. It's weak and often off key and does not do the music justice imo. Am I missing something?

  • Yes.

  • Wilco serve as a reminder of what music should be, beautiful, memorable and expressive.

  • nothing else even comes close...

  • nels is amazing the moment i heard he was joining wilco full-time i was ecstatic. check out his solo stuff.

  • nels cline thumbs up

  • omg...i'm not usually a big guitar solo fan, but nels' solo on this song gets me a little choked up...he is obviously a master with the electric guitar...i wish we could see the Austin City Limits performance of this song (i well remember watching that performance and my jaw dropping as nels did his solo)...love the song (nels puts the album version to shame) but when's the last time anyone saw them do it live?...i saw them late '06 in chicago and mid '07 in detroit and they didn't do this song

  • guess i should've gone to their 2/20/08 show in chicago...i've learned that they did muzzle of bees

  • I second that! I'm generally not so keen on guitar solos either, but with Wilco, they usually serve the songs. And Nels is fucking fantastic.

  • I don't get why people are so hung up on Nels Cline. Obviously, he is a *technically* fantastically gifted guitarplayer, but in my experience his interpretation of this solo doesn't do the album's version justice. (Eventhough I think this video is his best attempt). The album's version is an emotional subtle and gradually becoming more heartwringing plea with long stretched notes. Nels versions are usually a bit rough, with too much tremor and too much emphasis on running up and down scales.

  • fuckin' heard.

I saw Wilco a couple years ago--and Nels Cline could make some cool noises and play really fast, but it was Tweedy's solos that really brought the house down--really solid phrasing and great note choices.

Nels Cline plays guitar player solos. Jeff Tweedy plays songwriter solos.

  • "Nels Cline plays guitar player solos. Jeff Tweedy plays songwriter solos."

Touché. Couldn't have said it better.

  • If I were jeff, and could find a person who could replicate those solos and noise tracks, with a little bit of dischord instead of note for note and sound for sound exactness, I would see it as a godsend

Tweedy also told guitar magazine he was fed up working as a five piece, because everyone had to do so much live to keep up with the studio production on A Ghost is Born. That why nels is around, that and a really ripping guitar shed-a-thon when the crowd feels like it.

  • nels solos are better i think...maybe its just watching him perform them though. so much energy!!

  • And though I am usually not too hung up on guitar solo's either, I think Jeff Tweedy really knows how too capture the essence of letting a guitar solo contribute to the story of the songs he writes. 'At least that's what you said' for instance... I mean, my god. But not too fond of Nels Clines solo's on Sky Blue Sky. Seem a little more superficial too me than Jeff's IMHO.

  • i'm about 99% positive that if jeff didnt think it did the song justice he'd let nels know.

  • Jealousy's a bitch, isn't it?

Nels is amazing, both technically and stylistically.

  • oh Shut Up! Nels is amazing! very creative/unique as well.. and Sky Blue Sky wouldnt of sounded half of good without Nels solos its very.."Classy" sounding.. EX. Impossible Germany.. probably NOW one of Wilcos greatest songs! Keep up the work Nels!

  • Does Nels Cline rip or what?

  • this song ....OOZES melody. fucking exquisite.

  • doesnt get any better then this!!

  • lovely, lovely. so lovely.

  • musicians extraordinaire.

  • I love this video. So awesome. What a great song and a great band. I have loved this song through two break-ups and it still fucks me up. Thanks Mr. Tweedy!

  • I hate guitar solos. Fret wankery has never washed with me. If only all solos were like the one at the end of this incredible song, I would have a different opinion on guitar solos in general.

  • haha yup, Nels Cline is one of the best things to happen to guitar playing, ever. one of the most understated too.

  • if anyone ever saw that documentary about the making of mermaid avenue...man ive heard he's crazy but jeff tweedy is REALLY crazy in that one.

  • such a good second solo.

  • i like my jeff tweedy wit beard please

  • I like him with or without the beard!

  • Sublime solos

  • so subtile

  • Now that's a guitar solo.

  • I just ordered this DVD all because of this song.

I have no clue what else is on the DVD, but this song is worth the price of admission. Anything else is a bonus that may happen to be good.

  • its wilco. "may happen to be good"?

come on now, be realistic. its ALL amazing.

  • Nels Cline was so great when he did the fuzzy shred wail. Not a fan of the jazz guitar element in current Wilco.

  • Nels Cline is awesome no matter where he is playing. i love with wilco too.

  • UN-arguably my favorite band

  • This is a powerful lineup - I think the best Wilco yet. Although the touring crew for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (quartet) worked a sparser energy into their arrangements.

  • My favourite Wilco song. It's lyrics are extremely beautiful and the final solo is sublime. Thanks for the music.

  • One word: sublime.

  • I Love You Wilco. Nels Cline plays one mean solo.

  • Music doeesn't get much better than this.

  • What a good song
