  • The Kormoran was bristling with anti-aircraft and anti-personnel arms and once the torpedoes hit the Sydney, Kormoran would have had a substantial advantage. The Kormoran sailors would have been instructed by their superiors that they would be executed if they were caught due to their sneak attack. Therefore, any enemy survivors had to be disposed of. Being specifically armed for anti-personnel it would not have been difficult to pick off the Australians if Sydney sank first.

  • The Kormoran would have been supplied with the Japanese Type 93 torpedoe which was certainly available at that time. This torpedo (unbeknown to the allies) had more than 3 TIMES the range of THE BEST U.S torpedoes. The unsuspecting Allied Warships would manouever into gun range - the Sydney would have thought that her large guns would have a comfortable range barrier over any possible concealable guns. Komoran fires a volley of Type 93`s then moves in for close guns, straffing and kill survivors

  • @mrtonyis No, not possible. Japanese type 93 Long Lance torpedoes were 24" in diameter and 29'6" long. They also required special service equipment to keep the torpedo oxygen flasks topped up.

    The Kormoran -

    a. Never made it to Japan.

    b. Lacked the special service tooling for the Japanese weapon.

    c. Was fitted with torpedo tubes for the standard German G7-a torpedo - which had a 21" diameter and 23'7" length. Type 93 torpedoes - would not fit .

  • To all the neo nazis on this page. Go and die slowly and humiliatingly of cancer.

  • HMS Orion, one of Sydneys sister ship ran into a minfield in the Med and the next couple of hours touched off about 6 mines. Only one raft got away, only one seaman survived, was captured by the Germans, but was in such bad way that he was repatriated to Britain and died shortly after.

  • This is very tragic for both sides more tragic for the Australians then the Germans.

  • dankrug, your words will never carry any weight if you speak in that manner.Hide your racism, and go for solid facts to build your case.I love the german people,i'm half german myself. ...by the way,Mr Hitler did indeed give orders to exterminate jews.

  • The German navy in WWII stayed away from Nazi politics. Hitler referred to it as his "Christian navy'. They were honorable men who followed orders and did the best with what they fighting against vastly superior numbers. The old Hollywood propaganda of U-Boats machine-gunning survivors in lifeboats was total crap - didn't happen. Killing defenseless survivors in the water was actually a U.S.N. and R.N. specialty.

  • @agwhitaker Yes, this is true, look at the facts concerning the RMS Laconia, stupid American air crew bombing survivors of merchant ship sinking in lifeboats, and they were showing red cross flag as well !

  • I thought that the Ceylon Navy under Hilters command send one of its U boats to suck the Sydney. Ceylon had a very powerful U boat fotilla about 600+

  • well the first blow from the komoran hit the sydneys bridge killing most of its of its senior officers. the syney struck back but too bad it missed when the komoran poured withering fire on sydneys gun turrets. Next the komoran fired a torpedo into the sydneys bow where most of its crew were believed to be trapped

  • The Germans are gentlemen! They speak perfect English and never crack those sadistic smiles of allied veterans when they tell us how they killed Germans.

In regard to this episode the Germans were not believed at first and were defamed for half a century because the Australians needed an escape goat. Thank God she went down with all hands because if the Germans had approached the crippled Sydney in life boats they would have been machine gunned on the water!

  • Did you see that these "gentlemen" did in Russia?

  • The gentlemen gently patted some Russian chicks why why do u ask?

  • German soldiers killed innocent civilians, babies thrown in well. How call them gentlemen???

  • And the English have not? It's so easy to only concentrate on the evil Germans but let's take a look back in history and see what the English did in Africa hm?

  • more like what africans are doing in england

  • you mean the jews killed inoccents in russia the germans were liberators

  • The Germans killed not only Jews. Soviet Union lost around 30 million people in WW2! And according to you they were only Jews?

  • No jews were gassed or targeted for extermination nobody believes that furphy anymore

  • most of them shot in the back by there jew masters

  • what a load of rubbish ,why do you insist on slandering the great and good german people, you must be a typical blood thirsty lying racist jew

  • liar, the germans are a beutiful people that sacrificed a generation of their own to save the world from jewish bolshevism i would rather be a jew in germany than a arab in israel

  • do you mean angaist the comminist army that had massed on the german border, the germans saved the world from stalin and his jew masters history will call hitler" Adolf the great" as the free world is again in the grip of the blood thirsty racist jews and their multiculture immigration policies forced on the white countries on the threat of having your country destroyed

  • the german navy were respected by the english sailors. The navy operates in a unique way being on the sea.Honor, and seamanship were embraced by all.The average german soldier wasn't evil. Many were racist, but not murders. All large amies rape and pillage...it's sad that there's people around us that would murder n rape if they could.(most people wouldn't in any scenario, but many will)

  • Crap,The germans on the Kormoran are honorable men.

The German navy was different to the nazi's,they used the old German salute and for the most part where brave and heroic men.

Research the sinking of HMS Glowworm and you'll see what I mean.

  • It seems that Sydney manned it's big guns but left it's minor guns unmanned, and yet at that range they would have been crucial? They must have been suspicious, but obviously not suspicious enough. The feeling in those first few seconds knowing they had been duped must have been blood curdling, only worse was to follow.

  • This is fantastic! I love this story, sad, but so interesting.

  • The best video, i like it

  • Poor guys on the Sydney never had a chance she just got to chose to the Kormoran.

    RIP HMAS Sydney and Kormoran.

  • what alot of people don't seem to understand is that the dutch were allies of Australia, not neutrals

The Dutch had cruisers, destroyers, planes, submarines, freighter ships patrolling/supplying/helping the coast of Australia with the Royal Australian Navy

there is no way you'd fire at an allied freighter unless you were 100% sure that they were the enemy, however Sydneys approach was wrong

  • true the dutch were Australia allies. They helped them fight the Japanese later on. Sydney just came to close thinking she was seeing a dutch ship by the time she may have realized it was a german ship it was all to little to late.

  • Dutch subs and planes were based in Broome and Darwin during the war, from memory Dutch 1 ship was sunk in the Air Raids on Broome.

  • This is great. Why don't we get things like this on TV!!!

  • cuz aussie TV is tops:D

  • eh? this just suddenly appeared...i wasnt doing anything...whoa!
