@johnman59 what was being said there is that we would all be happier if people were to stop denigrating others on the basis of some xenophobic and unimaginative lowest-common-denominator standard. That's not the stuff of dissertation, but it is central to living in kindness and understanding.
to make fun of people or their art in order to reinforce one's own feeling of superiority (however intangible) is to perpetuate the elementary-level consciousness of popular culture. the shaggs are not some ubiquitous force of mediocrity that we hear in grocery stores/offices everywhere; they are little known and heard less. they deserve your respect. (btw, the accents [rural southern new hampshire] that you hear are now disappearing, if they've not already been subsumed by wal-mart homogeneity.
It really ticks me off that they even left the smallest mark on music at all. I don't think they are 3 musical genuises who make music that is difficult to replicate because it's so off time and nonsensical. I think they are horrible musicians that don't know how to keep time and they convince idiots to search for a deeper meaning behind they're suckiness.
It's been said that everyone who saw the Velvet Underground play went home and started a band. Likewise, everyone who saw the Shaggs play went home and killed themselves.

These recordings tend to haunt one if you've heard them like a strange dream. And one is compelled to return to them every now and again and you find that...no...no it wasn't a dream...this really happened...these recordings exist and they're even more inexplicable than one remembered...I just don't know what more to say.
I never heard saxophone in a Shaggs song before. Did one of the girls play it, or did they have to search to find a session player bad enough to fit in with the band?
I wish I'd found this last week, so I could've played it over and over for Hallowe'en.
I am really impressed by how much they can not listen to eachother at all.... the guitar and drums seem like they are being played on different planets. I'm pretty sure myself and many other muscians would struggle to reproduce this artwork. This the greatest band ever.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!! DIFFERENT PLANETS!!!!!!! Man. you just nailed it!!!! Its so awful that its good! Steve Dahl in Chicago was playing this on his show back in 79 or 80!!! He LOVED the Shaggs! They're definitely cool! Its like a garage band on really bad acid....
Exactly. Only musicians in possession of the greatest genius could possibly make music this horrific. By all odds they should accidentally find themselves in some kind of sync. They are a miracle of dissonance.
see, I don't really think they need to be some kind of geniuses in order for this music to be enjoyable. I don't really think it matters if the sound came intentionally or not.
listening to this kinda reminds me of that thing they say, where the brain only needs the first and last letters to be in the correct order in order to recognize them. It's like my ears just start filling in all the blanks to Shaggs songs to make normal sounding ones.
this is what happens people who dont have any musical skills (obviously) get together and make a band..
honestly this is the worst band i have ever heard omgggg all the instruments arent even in time and they singing is horrible.. and the drums, sounds like a 2 yr old is playing them.. actually a 2 yr old could play better
You must be an extremely unimaginative human. Most people would hate their music, it makes sense why they would. Most people have their ears jammed full with to much audible garbage to realize that The Shaggs are not horrible in any way. They wrote exactly what they wanted to write, and the few blessed to appreciate this music love it.
you are almost right with one thing u say except the shaggs are a band who couldnt play and were forced to by their dad, the band stopped as soon as he died
also they really arent that bad at all i really like them and i think it shows pure expression, also think about their history and then realise that music isnt for anyone but for everyone to have a go
"no description available" i'll say.

This is by far the best post-neo-psychedelic proto-grunge alternative ambient pre-trance/trip-hop album of 1969.
That's an inarguable fact.
Respect it, fools.
