McGrady was one of the most underrated players in the NBA for his first few seasons in Houston (up through 07-08). People just looked at his stats and shooting percentages and thought he wasn't that great, but the fact is those numbers were misleading. The guy just brought W's. Always. The Rockets won with him, and didn't without him. He was an incredible on-court leader before his decline.

Role Players like Luther Head and Steve Novak who camped around the perimiter and opened shot oppritunities bombed.

And their great defense crumbled when they needed it most relying on a not even 100% McGrady. Without Yao, their big man.

That's why they didn't win the title.
