@LarryCanFly WHAT !???! May I ask, are feeding that turbine for fuel ?? Never seen that much smoke out of a turbine. Years ago, I repowered a 29 ford with an old Boeing B-210 from an old Army "Bird Dog" (ala 50's program). I could smoke the hides off them rear "cheater" slicks with the best of the Big inch V-8's of the era (early 60's). I see it's been about 1 1/2 yrs since you posted this video..are you still with this project or ?? Great job and video..Thanks & stay with it.
Hi Larry! Everytime I watch your videos, I get inspired! I would LOVE to build my own ultralight helicopter BUT, there are SO MANY unanswered questions that I have about how they are constructed. Such as, how to make a swash plate, or how the collective is connected to the top rotor and things like that. But, I wish that someday I could learn how ALL of this stuff works and build myself one. I am EXTREMELY interested in how and what you made your heli-turbine out of? God speed and keep flying!
What is the present empty weight of this new turbine configured ship? It looks like it should have lost weight (and a reduction gear?) in the transition from 2 cylinder piston to turbine.
Larry, my name is Jenson. I'm 22 years old. Just starting out, about to leave the home nest and make my way in life. Leave for Coast Guard boot camp here in a few days. My dream is to fly helicopters some day - and if I'm lucky enough - to own one! After watching theses videos I feel so much more capable of achieving that dream.
I also just found my definition of "Cool old guy!" :) Take care and fly safe sir! Your vids bring huge smiles to my face!
I am a small scale ultralight fan in Kentucky. I live in Stanton, KY very near to the Red River Gorge. You should come out and make a video of you landing the turbine chopper on Chimney Rock!
Nice work. Be careful. Many people have the gift of a mechanical mind. Some people are able to understand electronics well. Yet, it is rare to find a person who can bridge the gap and grasp both. You have done just that.
Interesting! Don't know much about them things but a turbine works off the exhaust in a diesel and gas powered engine and the power turbine works off the crank shaft. How does it work on a jet engine?
@appy32 Yes, a one gallon paint can was the perfect size, light weight, and made of high quality steel. It was a used can. See "first start" video where the old paint is burned out. For my turbine oil tank I used a brand new one!
Absolutely fantastic, Larry. The billowing smoke makes it look like she's gonna self destruct at any moment, which makes the video all the more awesome. Nerd warp factor 9, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Absolutely AWESOME, Larry !! Congrats !! ............ man, I thought it was tough getting my Schoffmann helo together !! LOL !!! VERY nice work. An inspiration to all of us out here building................
@CaptainKrimson I am? You know, I saw a nomex (sp?) jump suit on eBay, but I don't know, if I'm doing something where I actually need fire protective gear, then I don't want to do it, or do all I can to prevent needing it.
I dont know the design of these engines so please excuse this question if its not reasonable, but is the smoke engine oil, or gear oil.? Is this a RPM pressure issue?..Very interesting Larry, I have some reading to do....lol
@carnivore10 Good question: There are two gearboxes. One at the bottom gears the compressor/turbine shaft to the starter motor, oil pump, fuel pumps, and high speed governor. It's a dry sump type pumping oil out which I direct thru two coolers then into a DIY oil storage tank made from a (new) 1 gallon paint can. Then on the top is the free turbine 20:1 reduction gearbox. Turbine oil is pumped to both gearboxes. The upper drains to the lower but the free turbine labyrinth seal leaks.
@willythewave The seal is a non-contact labyrinth type designed to work horizontally - not vertically. I added a large drain pipe as low as I could in the gearbox and a valve to limit the oil flowing in, but worry the balance - too much oil = smoke, too little = ruin gearbox.
Is that a "2 stroke turbine" using gasoline/oil mixture ? ha ha ha
to much oil in the mixture.. !

Do you have N2, ITT, or EGT gauges? It's real dangerous if you don't. Stay safe!

@SketchRC I have only EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp), you can see it at Youtube search: "larrys gas".

@r22accipiter Yes! Yes! It came in at 245 pounds. FAA FAR Part 103 allows 254 lbs, which means I can add 9 pounds of goodies.

Cool video Larry, been waiting for this one.
So does the turbine give you more power? Longer range?
Or is it so that you can use the cheaper Jet A1 fuel?
Or is it all three?
