To be honest, this performance isn't the best representation of what the band...excuse me.... CAN do.

What made the band so awesome was their style of improv and editing, which this performance really had neither. To truly get the experience, you'd have to listen to Tago Mago all the through. Just listening to one of their live performances isn't going to show you 1% of the bands talent.

I'm a huge Can fan, but I just did not get their records until I heard their live stuff and still prefer watching performance videos or some of the better boots out there (Box Music is the best, imho). On record, Jaki's drum are so weirdly recorded and the jams are so truncated..."Paperhouse" on record sounds like above average but still fairly mild 60s psych, but here it really takes on its "this predicted the future of music" form.

damn I just don't understand why anyone would say that can are krautrock? all those other bands-faust, etc., are so annoying, as if their music goes nowhere and I don't think the members even pay attention to what the others are doing, and it's so repetitive. this on the other hand is brilliant, intertwined and amazing sounding, without continuous repeats.

They just don't fit in with the predominately electronic experimentation that was common to Faust, Cluster, Neu, Kraftwerk, etc. These guys retained their rock band attitude, and continued to blend sounds from all over to form great, organic music - it never reached a point where it felt synthetic like that of their Krautrock contemporaries. These guys are as avante-garde and timeless as it gets, and shouldn't be considered iconic of a time and a place.
