I deplore the way Col. Fitts treats Ricky, but when one looks at his background, I think you can feel sorry for Col. Fitts. The experience of being in the Marine Corps has compelled him to suppress his homosexuality, and he does this by acting homophobic. When he sees Ricky with Lester and thinks they are engaging in homosexual activity, he is disturbed because makes him conscious of the fact that he is gay, and ultimately he can't hide it, as shown when he kisses Lester.

Being in the marines means that he has been forced to hide it from everyone his entire life. When he kisses Lester, for the first time in his life he shares his true self, and Lester rejects him, and all his fears come to fruition.

Celebrating our differences can only happen when BOTH sides can accept and respect the alternate opinions between the two lifestyles. Homophobia is an incredibly weak copout and argument. Gay men stereotypically, since they have more female hormones than stright men, tend to be smart, career driven and responsible members of society, yet they are overusing a very primitive and intellectually lacking argument against those who do not share or support their lifestyle. Acceptance works both ways.

The University of Georgia did a study involving 64 men (half of whom declared themselves anti-gay and the other half as indifferent). It found that the men who most strongly opposed homosexuality were sexually stimulated by homoerotic images. So there might be some truth to it.

I agree it's not a raging phobia of gay people. However, it could indicate insecurities within oneself.
