How much did it cost you? How many extras did you have put in? Is it supercharged, blower works etc? I spoke to that Aussie company that does it, so many price options.
@maxwell153 - It cost quite a bit. I didn't have any extras put in as this wasn't built by any of the replica companies. This Interceptor was built for promotions and exhibitions and was used in the documentary "Back 2 The Max". It was built by Scott Smith with the fellas who built the two for the films. It's been driven in the holy land of Broken Hill, on the film sites, by the men who drove the first two. It has its own special history.
@PatrolmanDark You have my sincerest jealousy. I'm debating which way to go with this, trying to give myself as many options before making a decision. When Fury Road comes out , and its only a matter of time, the cost then will make now seem like bus change so I need to move on this. I hope shes giving you as much joy as I can only prey you're getting out of it.
That comes as a surprise, as it would seem it's provenance has been proved, that it was sold by the fella who did the carnie tour. The history of the car has been pretty thoroughly documented. Do you know differently?
Sorry my mistake. It was privately owned during production of the original movie (with the bolt on parts added just for the movie). After the movie became big, the producers were able to retain it for the sequel. It seems it is the real car on display in the Cars of the Stars Motor Museum in the U.K.
Ah, ok. That syncs up with the history that I am aware of from Peter Barton's site, madmaxmovies, which has the entire history, and from the folks I know who were/are involved with that gang. Mine was built by those folks and used for exhibitions and the documentary "Back 2 The Max".
What a fantastic car - perhaps one of the coolest, most striking in cinematic history. I too saw this car on the big screen as a teenager and hoped to own it one day.
Thumbs up to you for living the dream!
P.S. What's the deal with engaging the "red" switch? I'm assuming the "nitro" bost from the film is fictional?
Funny thing, that. I never have in all these years. I've had quite a few cops stop and want to check out the car. Was doing a photoshoot yesterday and we had to stop to answer questions about the Interceptor. No worries, though, we really do have cool cops in my town, they're car guys.
Ahh yea they seem to be...when its a wicked car. Im pretty sure id be arrested if I drove the interceptor. Way cool man. They should bring it back for fury road.
The interview with George Miller about two weeks ago where he showed two of the cars they're shooting for Fury Road showed one that looks suspiciously like my car, but with different headlight coverings.
They made one for MM1. They made another one to roll and blow up in MM2. Two total for the filming. Mine was made years later by Scott Smith and some of the original guys for use in the great documentary "Back 2 The Max".
I have not seen Number One in person, though I've heard it's no longer a runner. I must visit at some point in my life though, it's a moral imperative.
I seen the original at the 1984 Perth royal show....I think it was travelling around at the time...I made the guy selling the tickets SWEAR to me it was the original.....not 100percent sure if it was though!
It most likely was the number 1 car, that year would sync up, as far as I know, with its time doing the carnie tour. And I don't think anyone, at that time, had made a replica.
Yeah I was 10 at the time and fell in love with it (fake s/charger and all)...I really loved the interior!....I wouldve went for wider rims on the rear..but I think 265's in 79 were the fattest of fat in Oz at the time!
As Barry the mechanic in MM 1 says, "It's the last of the V8's, with phase 4 heads, 600 horsepower through the wheels, she's meaness to music, this bitch is born to run" man, your car is awesome.
Cool! You'd be most likely to find the Interceptor on I35e, on a Saturday or Sunday morning between 9am and noon, usually northbound. What color and brand is your rig? If you see me, PLEASE hit your air-horn. The Interceptor has, as seen in Mad Max 1, its own set of airhorns. I'll honk back.
Cheers, sir. If you ever make it across the pond to the Dallas, Texas area, give me a holler, we'll go for a ride. Though we'll have to drive on the right, at least the RHD interior won't feel weird for you.
Indeed. 4 days after it arrived here, I took a 650 mile journey. 60 miles from home, the tailshaft bearing seized up, heating the front yoke shaft so it bent 30 degrees - which caused the "UNBREAKABLE" nodular iron bellhousing to shatter like glass. I used the opportunity to upgrade the 33 year old 4-speed Toploader to a 5-speed Tremec, rated to handle the power from that engine, but it still looks the same inside. Other than that, just regular maintenance and weekly driving.
Dude, you are so freakin' lucky. That must make you feel like you're on top of the world.
One thing though, does the supercharger really disengage when you pull on that switch on the shifter? I know i heard you on your ride along video; i just always thought that was a special effects deal
I agree. I was 14 when I saw it in the theater. The image of the Interceptor was burned into my brain as the coolest thing I ever saw. I got lucky that I was able to buy it when she came up for sale. I spare no expense or time keeping her up, and I drive her every weekend it isn't raining, making sure the Last V8 remains operational.
I paid a ton. I heard it was up for sale after the filming of the great documentary, "Back 2 The Max". I put out feelers in Oz to locate it. Found it, had it inspected and verified to be the car & had it shipped over. The documentary is available at back2themax dot com, and you can find the trailer for the doco here on YouTube!
Oddly enough, I know. It's a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT. This is where it's a little confusing. That's Ford of Australia. They had their own designs, made their own bodies. The Australian Ford Falcon has NOTHING in common with the USA Falcon. And they never exported the Aussie Ford Falcon to the USA, so most Americans have never been able to figure it out...
Yep, since the remains of the last of the 2 movie cars is immobile in the Cars of the Stars museum, they had to build the car one more time for the documentary and other celebrations. Scott Smith was the builder, with, I understand, the assistance of some of the blokes who built the first two. I'm told they consider this to be the brother car to the first two.
What a way to arrive to work! Wish I could do that! Awesome!
