@monge111 - Metal (most of the time) focuses on the instrumentation, not the vocals. Indie focuses on lyrics and the instrumentation is awful as is the singing. Harsh vocals are supposed to be done so lyrics are not distracting. And notice that when metal bands these days have "proper" singers they are most often in the operaitic ranges (the most common being soprano/mezo Soprano)

I'm not really sure what people mean about "indie" anymore. I thought you just listen to the music you like weither it's "hip" or not (or on a major or indie). I go to a lot of local shows and most of the artists I see just release music on their own or on an small label regardless of their style, they all sound different but don't adhere to the Mainstream "Indie Rock" style. Im tired of indie fans and musicians shitting on metalheads because they cant understand the message behind the music and lyrics. They dont understand that indie is FUCKING easy to write (shit all you do is throw in chords of a minor or pentatonic scale and really crappy lyrics) and that metal like megadeth, iron maiden and jazz fusion acts like mahavishnu orchestra or weather report r just 10x more talented musically.

the idea of most indie music isn't WEEDLEY WEEDLEY WAH ZOMG LOOK AT ME SHRED! it's about harmony and meaning. Bands like built to spill, early modest mouse, The National, stuff like that, it's about feeling. What do you think inspired metal? The blues. The blues was/is all about feeling too. If kids are listening to indie music just to be different, that's dumb. But it's no better than a kid listening to metal to seem like a hardass, (which is more common than you might think).
So, if you must favor one kind of music over another, you should try and realize that people have different tastes, just like foods. So try and be a little more tolerant.
You know, Indie as a term really is short for INDEPENDENT. it wasn't meant to be a genre.

The music you hear on the radio isn't indie- infact it's basically the same as what post-grunge is to grunge- they took the sound and made it more commercial, defeating the whole object of the original sound in the process. I'm no indie fan, but Tokio Hotel, Death Cab For Cutie and all those other crappy bands are the most commerical POS I've ever heard. After Creed of course :P
I do like a few artists that people might consider indie (I do not) i.e. The White Stripes, Sufjan Stevens etc.

Whenever I listen to Indie i feel cold. Yeah, Indie rock makes me feel like I'm all alone in the middle of a snowstorm! It's so horrid! ALSO! It gets stuck in my head and I can't sleep! I was kept up all night once because a stupid Cold War Kids song was on the radio and I couldn't get the piece of trash out of my head!

You can have punk that is indie, metal that is indie, comedy that is indie, country that is indie. The proper use would be "Fleet Foxes play folk, cathedral, hippy, 60sish style music on an independent label (sub pop)"

I usually never use the term "indie" today but "alternative". Then I explain that I am not talking about the pop culture version of "alternative". Indie is the next alternative. Just watch.....

I just don't care for the "indie" term, it's so broad, and has such an affectation to it. Early R.E.M. could be considered indie, but a lot of people don't think of them that way.
And modern "indie" today tends to be synonymous with Pitchfork, which I HATE.

I'm not really sure what people mean about "indie" anymore. I thought you just listen to the music you like weither it's "hip" or not (or on a major or indie). I go to a lot of local shows and most of the artists I see just release music on their own or on an small label regardless of their style, they all sound different but don't adhere to the Mainstream "Indie Rock" style. Cool song nonetheless, made me laugh.

Pretty much all the bands have a sort of odious vintage 60's guitar jangle in boring 4/4 time usually reliant on good production to make it sound interesting..
The people in those bands & the people who listen to it are always the worst type of fashion cripple who are always on the hunt for the right records & clothing to blend in with who they perceive to be the "cool" people..

No it could be said that "Indie" once was a tag for bands that were considered underground or on a independent label, but nowadays the word "indie" i would say can be described as a sound. Not a very good one, but indeed a sound. I hate when i argue with people and they use the indie means independent lable and im like "no its a fucking sound" and yes it is a sort of pop music and it does indeed blow and they are a bunch of vintage pussy rip off bands.

first, Indie and rock don't belong in the same sentence. Second, bands like Kaiser chiefs are direct ripoffs of older alt rock bands like Blur, Oasis and Radiohead (bands who actually knew how to play music imo)and finally most Indie lyrics are complete bullshit, take Arctic Monkeys for example, they have songs called "Pehaps vampires is a bit strong but..." and "Fluorescent adolscent" names which have NO relation whatsoever to their song meanings. its just the music for the idiot by the idiot

I listen to indie and metal.
Gorgoroth and Strokes are two completely different bands, both with many good assets.
I enjoy them both very much, however.
If you listen to a band like Neutral Milk Hotel, or Islands or Xiu Xiu, you can tell that not all "indie" bands are doing the same thing.
Mainstream "indie" DOES sound similar: i.e.: the strokes, bloc party, rock kills kid, kaiser chiefs.
If you look hard enough, you can find some really interesting bands

All indie bands sound identical. There's never been an easier time for the music industry to make money out of the stupid empty soul-less little pop culture student morons. People who listen to indie don't care about music, they care about image. That's why the industry keeps churning out bands that look (and sound) identical; the insecure popularity-conscious indie crowd will know it's ok to listen to a new band who are exactly the same as some other band they already know it's 'cool' to like.

The irony about indie is that 'independent' used to be about being different and doing things your own way (hence the word 'independent'). But now, indie has spawned a whole generation of ignorant pricks, whose main concern is adapting their lifestyle and personality to appease some 'indie scene', lest their peers would consider them un-cool. There's nothing independent about looking and sounding like a million others. And theres definitely nothing 'indie' about being signed to EMI.

i have a varied group of friends, and i can honestly say, of the 10 that play an instrument (and no they don't all play guitar and drums), none of them can stand indie music bar one, who has been playing guitar for 7 months.
as a musician, personally, i find the bands that you have described as 'incoherent', are much more musically talented.
