@OUallday at least she is making an attempt to learn about other cultures & is showing an interest in helping people. If you have any input that you feel she could benefit from why don't you include that in your comment instead of criticizing her.
Oh he has a foundation has he? That's nice of him. Don't forget Donald Trump, I also spoke about him. I still remember one day that I saw in the news: the President of Congo was building the most expensive personal Jet Plain in the world with some details in gold, whilst his people were starving and dying. Dear Adipatus, I only spoke about Gates and Trump to give you American examples. But American criticism was never my intention. I just don't agree with "some" social differences.
You're right about Africa and malaria, perhaps you should do some research about Dengue aswell, since it's so close to your country. Perhaps if there was a limit to what some people earn like Bill Gates, Donald Trump and some soccer players, and that extra money could go to schools, to help poor people, etc etc. This wold would be a better place. But because most of these guys are selfish bastards, I guess they will never let anything like this to happen. Farewell ;)
I don't think that giving Gates' billions to people would solve anything. It would make things worse. Poor people would use the money to make more babies and to keep more of them living below the poverty line. The end result will be a temporary relief of poverty and an even bigger demographic explosion and chronic starvation of people, and what to say about the corresponding environmental catastrophe.
Hi Adipatus, Err, sorry, I don't think you got the general idea. I agree with you not giving people money directly. But, with some cleverness providing them with medical attention and of course some contraceptives as well... You have to understand that some poor people don't even know how to prevent from having babies. I truly think that that "extra money" should be applied to help everyone, to build better schools, Hospitals, to give old people better retirement conditions, etc etc...
I think Mr. Gates is in a position to give education, health care, and sexual education to poor people, as I believe his fountation does. The problem is that many powerful religious groups that have the US government in a stranglehold consider it a sin to teach people about having sex, and how to have sex without suffering the consequences of disease and pregnancy. I think those are the real bastards.
BUT , HAVE U LEARNED THE TRUTH, THAT " EVIL WHITE RACE, FROM THE SLUMS OF EUROPE, INBREEDING ILLEGALLY, AROUND THE WORLD IN "STOLEN LANDS WITH LOOTED WEALTH OF REST OF FREE&CIVILIZED HUMANITY",FOR OVER 500 YEARS, ARE THE " ROOT CAUSE OF EVIL&ALL HUMAN PROBLEMS OF POVERTY, DISEASE ,WARS, VIOLENCE, &GLOBAL WARMING"?.

malaria is one of natures way of limiting the population of humans. when malaria was partially eradicated in some parts of southeast asia, population boomed; and so with poverty.
Instead of flying to South Africa, you could have spent the money of your flight for charity. And also it would have reduced global warming. Start in front of your door. And next time buy less big glasses. It's a wast of material.

easy for a wealthy kid that never experienced poverty to suggest a $5 gift for everyone. i rather recommend to stop muslim warlords and their reigns in order to save all the UN war budget for the people mentioned in the clip. set the world free from religious cowards, i recommend a bullet. we all will then be well of for centuries. that´s my davos message. ps: miss smart: try touching a human liver, do service for the red cross in afghanistan.
I agree that we should make a monument to malaria for its efforts in curtailing human overgrowth, but I totally rebuke the crap about your Daddy in the Sky.
maybe we should view malaria as God's way of culling the size of the global herd.
the earth's tangible resources are finite, yet the ability for humans to breed is unlimited. notice how the areas with the highest birth rates are the poorest/most disease prone?

Dear Toilet, I thought that your "God" references were total bunck. Real problems require real solutions, not fairytales.
However, I wholeheartedly agree with your conclusions: Now that tigers, lions, and bears are either dead or safely behind bars, we must consider malaria a check on humanity's runaway growth.
Dear downdruss, what do you mean? The Americans are around 300 million, whereas the people of the third world are around five billion. Surely the third world is hurting the world more. And all of them want to live like Americans, wich will entail more consumption of natural resources than anyone can imagine.
Simply stated and true; saving the lives of a group of 3 world humans isnt going to have NEAR the negative impact on the environment as if you did the same for a group of ANY industrialized/commercialized country residents.
"Saving the world" & "Saving lives" are two vastly different goals. The reason humans are in this mess is because there are too many of us. We aren't dying as young as we used to, mothers aren't dying during labor as much...etc Medical science has lengthened our life expectancy to ridiculous ages where we can spend the last 20 years depleting the ozone from the comfort of our nursing home bed all snug in adult diapers.
If every couple would have only one child, the wold population would be cut in half. Modern couples are opting more & more to have only one child because of their busy lifes. Well, the answer to your questins must be: Why not?
Just because cancer is a big problem, that does not mean that we are gunna put life on hold until it is solved. It might well never be solved, and other problems are not gunna wait til we're ready to deal with them.

1. Why the fuck are we so sure we are entitled to have a small and fragile planet support the however many trillions of humans that we insist on crapping out?
2. Who the fuck died and made us the owners of this planet at the expense of all other living and non-living entities and ecosystems?
3. Why the fuck we don't give a damn about the countless species we have driven and are driving into extinction, but are willing to spare no expense to keep every fucking human alive, even though as large animals we are each placing enormous demands on extremely limited natural resources?
5. Who the fuck can I give five bucks to make sure that the human herd can be decreased to a sizeable one billion, and not the 12 billion we are so well poised to achieve?
6. Could it be that malaria is one of the mechanisms that We The Planet Earth have to stave off the planetary, irreversible death that will necessarily result from this cancer that is Homo Sapiens?
THANK YOU. However much I agree with you Adipatus, Ive come to accept that the stupidity of the masses is an integral part of our own evolution. Our existence is as natural a phenomenon as the existence of guano on the Gallapagos.
Species that dont survive us have weaker genes.
And those of us who DO survive ( the most unscrupulous assholes) deserve to stay here on a dying planet.

Somewhere around the mouths of underwater volcanos, tiny amoeba that live in extreme temperatures will be the "primeval slime" at the beginning of the next phase of earths evolution. As we continue to warm up and gravitate naturally a little closer to the sun , they will flourish and replace us. And we will have been one of the most brief encounters earth has ever known.
Dear Steppid: Let's not kid ourselves into thinking that we are tougher and greater than the animals we eat, destroy, use, and enslave. You are on to something: cockroaches, insects, and amoeba will barely notice after we are gone and they continue to thrive on few resources. But as "Kings of Creation" we'll be up the creek without a paddle once our precious civilization dies of hunger, thirst, or war. Then we won't be able to live neither as kings nor as paupers.
Dear Steppid: Maybe once we are gone some life will continue to thrive and even evolve intelligence to equal ours. But, alas, they will not have access to the resources and sources of energy that we have squandered. Maybe they won't be able to get past inventing the wheel because of this lack. If we destroy our mother, we'll have destroyed ourselves. And if we destroy ourselves, we will have squandered Earth's only chance to create sustainable, space-faring intelligent life.
Adipatus. again we are mostly in agreement. I guess what Im driving at here, is that even our destructive wonton abuse of resources seems to be an integral part of our evolutionary road. I do my utmost not to contribute to that road, but then again, compared to small Indian family I'm a bloated ignorant resource hog. Yes we will destroy ourselves and take fukwads of life forms with us. But what is resource to us, wont resemble what is resource to those who survive.
Second, it's great that you want to help those people survive malaria, but how are mosquito nets a solution? I'm assuming the nets go over their beds? What happens when they have to get out of bed to go do stuff? Won't the mosquitoes get them then? Why don't we get them vaccines like you and your family received? Would that be really expensive?
Why the fuck are we so sure we are entitled to have a small and fragile planet support the however many trillions of humans that we insist on crapping out?
Who the fuck died and made us the owners of this planet at the expense of all other living and non-living entities and ecosystems?
I was just kidding about the pretty girl thing, but still a real genious would have just had all that information in her head instead of reading off of a paper she probably didn't even write.
She tried to send me a message trying to say I was stupid, and being a bitch, but she is obviously the ignorant one posting a video on youtube thinking she is not going to get negative responses.
these people have been living without mosquito nets for centuries now.. an African friend of mine told me he's gotten malaria like 20 times in his life and before he came to Holland malaria felt like a flu.. so I think wasting $5 for some nets is kinda selfish of you.. won't you agree it's better to give them education so in the future they can buy there own nets? something to think about...
Dear prince 0427, that's a great point! Humanity has lived, survived, and thrived with malaria for millions of years. Let's not pretend that life is impossible with malaria. Please! Human blood has even evolved to resist malaria. I mean, come on!
it seems to me like you just took a video, then replied so people would watch thinking that it was an actual reply, but apparently you want to start ur own damn christians fund, im pretty sure thats not what the davos question or whatever was about. fag
it might be a sad fact that so many people die from malaria,, but maybe this is the worlds way of pushing back at the human race, we have encroached on the wilderness far too much and it is fighting back, besides this point, the world is overpopulated, if we start "saving lives" then the problem only increases.. the terrible truth is that to save the world, millions and millions of people must die OR we mush colonize other planets,, which seems more likely to happen???
$5.50 x 3000000000 = $16,500,000,000.00 i just dont have that kinda cash on me . and thats befor replacments or education fees for the ppl to use them or distribution costs
I totally agree. Malaria is the leading cause of death for kids 5 an under in Africa and the longer we can protect them from malaria allows them to grow and develop properly. Its a great idea I know Rick O'Reiley the former columnist from Sports Illustrated is big on this idea too.
I'm sorry, but malaria doesn't affect 1 out of 2 people in the world. Though it affects many, and there's a quick, easy and cheap solution to it. Did I mention it's not costly? Well, for us (America and others) it's not a problem. It's only a tiny percentage of our total money, compared to the economy of other countries. Thus, a much easier task for us. So I agree with you in this sense.
I like the practicality of your solution. It is unique in that respect from a great many other videos that give complaints but no solutions. However, I agree that your idea lacks results with longevity. Keep going, though! I appreciated this video very much.
It makes more sense to begin a mosqito net INDUSTRY there - using local labor and locally produced materials. This not only provides a solution, but an opportunity to empower them to make choices about what to buy to save their own lives. I think $5.50 towards organizing this effort makes more sense.
I found the images and your plea stirring and emotionally moving. It is sad people cannot afford the $5.50 USD to purchase something to save their own lives. I concur with another commenter: A band-aid will only aid in creating a temporary fix to a much bigger underlying problem. They need to create among themselves a society aiding the advancement of their community. You can give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will eat forever.
yeah...I'm confused to...Davos is a huge meeting of brillent people that get together and brain storm ideas to help better the world. How is that preventing peace?
Yes, understand that many of the ideas may never be used, but isn't good that people are at least thinking and trying?
Do you realize that your video is one of a very FEW Davos answers given by women? Amazing video, keep talking and speaking up for the women of the world.
In my opinion your right in one point: I read recently in Scientific American that really little money can save millions if well spent. There was pretty much about malaria. So it is true. But the whole problem is about delivering it to people. The idea, yes, it is great. But I see youve been to Africa and yet dont see the vital problem: the warlords. They intercept majority of convoys. The sad truth is that we need guns to help africa. Lots of guns.
we need to do much more for those in Africa. The babying they recieve from the United States and other nations is simply not suffiecient to truly save those people. We gives them food, but it only lasts so long, as will the proposed nets, which will help but not fix the problem. What these people really need is education, towns, jobs, houses, how can we have any pride in our countries if we sit and watch our fellow humans suffer and die as they are?
I thought this already was in motion, Sachs made lots of noise about malaria. But it never hurts to bring it to the attention. Although the execution should also be thought of: should it be free or not, locally produced, maintained (a net without proper impregnation is ineffective) and not to forget educate people on why it is important to use it!
Hi Emily, great video and subject. I had a similar experience in Uganda in February 2007. Anyone interested in helping after seeing your video should see the Nothing But Nets web site. They can learn more about Malaria and even buy a net for someone in Africa. Good work and good luck.

Dear Chewxy, DDT may help to kill the moskitoes that carry malaria, but ddt also poison the food chain and kills living things. We are not alone yet on this planet. Also, mosquitos can evolve resistance to ddt and come back stronger after a few generations, as happened in the 1970 when ddt was widely used (and is probably still used in the third world anyway).

There are campaigns out there that promote buying nets. I could buy multiple nets and yet would that really do good?
These people who survive malaria with our nets also face death from malnutrition, diarrhea, parasites from diseased water..

Amen
Steppid 4 years ago
Dear Steppid: Let's not kid ourselves into thinking that we are tougher and greater than the animals we eat, destroy, use, and enslave. You are on to something: cockroaches, insects, and amoeba will barely notice after we are gone and they continue to thrive on few resources. But as "Kings of Creation" we'll be up the creek without a paddle once our precious civilization dies of hunger, thirst, or war. Then we won't be able to live neither as kings nor as paupers.
Adipatus 4 years ago
Dear Steppid: Maybe once we are gone some life will continue to thrive and even evolve intelligence to equal ours. But, alas, they will not have access to the resources and sources of energy that we have squandered. Maybe they won't be able to get past inventing the wheel because of this lack. If we destroy our mother, we'll have destroyed ourselves. And if we destroy ourselves, we will have squandered Earth's only chance to create sustainable, space-faring intelligent life.
Adipatus 4 years ago
Adipatus. again we are mostly in agreement.

First of all... you're really cute.
Second, it's great that you want to help those people survive malaria, but how are mosquito nets a solution? I'm assuming the nets go over their beds? What happens when they have to get out of bed to go do stuff? Won't the mosquitoes get them then? Why don't we get them vaccines like you and your family received? Would that be really expensive?
thefunkybeat79 4 years ago
... the mosquitoes are more active during night time were you not listening? the nets will save many lives.

She tried to send me a message trying to say I was stupid, and being a bitch, but she is obviously the ignorant one posting a video on youtube thinking she is not going to get negative responses.

these people have been living without mosquito nets for centuries now.. an African friend of mine told me he's gotten malaria like 20 times in his life and before he came to Holland malaria felt like a flu.. so I think wasting $5 for some nets is kinda selfish of you.. won't you agree it's better to give them education so in the future they can buy there own nets? something to think about...
prince0427 4 years ago
Dear prince 0427, that's a great point! Humanity has lived, survived, and thrived with malaria for millions of years. Let's not pretend that life is impossible with malaria. Please! Human blood has even evolved to resist malaria. I mean, come on!

it might be a sad fact that so many people die from malaria,, but maybe this is the worlds way of pushing back at the human race, we have encroached on the wilderness far too much and it is fighting back, besides this point, the world is overpopulated, if we start "saving lives" then the problem only increases.. the terrible truth is that to save the world, millions and millions of people must die OR we mush colonize other planets,, which seems more likely to happen???
MattChez 4 years ago
girl, you are being logic,
so many money goes to wars, fighting and stuff,
they could save the world but they don't want it too,
may be they thinking they will not benefit anything from it,
you have a great heart,

I totally agree. Malaria is the leading cause of death for kids 5 an under in Africa and the longer we can protect them from malaria allows them to grow and develop properly. Its a great idea I know Rick O'Reiley the former columnist from Sports Illustrated is big on this idea too.

wait a minute, we want more people to live? i thought over population was one of the earths biggest problems?
ShrinerMcbitey 4 years ago

Billions of lives? I wasn't aware billions die due to the lack of mosquito nets.
Nice sentiments, good intention, but..very mis-teen-america ish answer.
rharcus 4 years ago 6
It makes more sense to begin a mosqito net INDUSTRY there - using local labor and locally produced materials. This not only provides a solution, but an opportunity to empower them to make choices about what to buy to save their own lives. I think $5.50 towards organizing this effort makes more sense.
leneia 4 years ago
much better insight. easier on both countries and much more long term
thehmmmm 4 years ago
I found the images and your plea stirring and emotionally moving. It is sad people cannot afford the $5.50 USD to purchase something to save their own lives. I concur with another commenter: A band-aid will only aid in creating a temporary fix to a much bigger underlying problem. They need to create among themselves a society aiding the advancement of their community. You can give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will eat forever.

metalo1973 4 years ago
yeah...I'm confused to...Davos is a huge meeting of brillent people that get together and brain storm ideas to help better the world. How is that preventing peace?
Yes, understand that many of the ideas may never be used, but isn't good that people are at least thinking and trying?

In my opinion your right in one point: I read recently in Scientific American that really little money can save millions if well spent. There was pretty much about malaria. So it is true. But the whole problem is about delivering it to people. The idea, yes, it is great. But I see youve been to Africa and yet dont see the vital problem: the warlords. They intercept majority of convoys. The sad truth is that we need guns to help africa. Lots of guns.

traceur9 4 years ago
we need to do much more for those in Africa. The babying they recieve from the United States and other nations is simply not suffiecient to truly save those people. We gives them food, but it only lasts so long, as will the proposed nets, which will help but not fix the problem. What these people really need is education, towns, jobs, houses, how can we have any pride in our countries if we sit and watch our fellow humans suffer and die as they are?

you're hot n that was some clever shit
hotnhornyhelen 4 years ago
I thought this already was in motion, Sachs made lots of noise about malaria. But it never hurts to bring it to the attention. Although the execution should also be thought of: should it be free or not, locally produced, maintained (a net without proper impregnation is ineffective) and not to forget educate people on why it is important to use it!

Hi Emily, great video and subject. I had a similar experience in Uganda in February 2007. Anyone interested in helping after seeing your video should see the Nothing But Nets web site. They can learn more about Malaria and even buy a net for someone in Africa. Good work and good luck.

Or DDT!
Chewxy 4 years ago
Dear Chewxy, DDT may help to kill the moskitoes that carry malaria, but ddt also poison the food chain and kills living things. We are not alone yet on this planet. Also, mosquitos can evolve resistance to ddt and come back stronger after a few generations, as happened in the 1970 when ddt was widely used (and is probably still used in the third world anyway).
