If gun laws were the only thing I was looking at this election, I would vote conservative. Thankfully, this isn't the case. But after talking to my liberal and NDP candidates, I don't really think I will vote liebral either.

What Purpose does a hand gun have in the hands of the public. I ask this question with people in communities such as Toronto 2007, where a child was killed by a handgun, registared hunting rifles should be aloud to stay but hand guns have no purpose in our society.
Here are a few purposes for handguns in the hands of the public. Since you asked.
- Sport shooting (IPSC, IDPA, PPC, Bullseye and the list goes on.)
- Hunting (while handgun hunting is enjoyed in many countries around the world, this option has been closed to Canadians. Many gun grabbers will often cite this as a reason to ban handguns, "if you can't hunt with them then why have them". So why not make it legal to hunt with them?)
- Self defence (while many will atribute self defence and the right to bear arms as an American "value", it is also a little known Canadian value as well as a right. Don't believe me... read the English Bill of Rights, the British North America Act and our present day Charter of Rights and Freedoms. )
As to your comment on the child being killed in Toronto. While this is a most unfortunate event, effort would probably be better spent banning private pools as drowning is one of the leading causes of child deaths. The death of this child was also caused during the commision of a crime.
You are talking of the banning of gun ownership for the law abiding. This hardly seemes to be the solution to the problem.
