  • I'm not going to say its bad technique b/c its just one solo but there are ALOT better things you can do in jazz than just hit high notes and fool around a little. Freddie Hubbard will probably always be my favorite jazz trumpet player.

  • Who, what, why, where, when? Somebody accused Jon Faddis of bad technique? Oh dear.

  • gotta love faddis :D

  • OK... I hate to be that guy. But there are WAY WAAAY better jazz players than Jon Faddis. Granted, he can play some high notes. But as far as his soloing goes its all doodly fingers. Listen to Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Tom Harrell if you want to hear how jazz is supposed to sound. This is not "good technique."

  • @womb0womb0 :: Not all jazz trumpeters are going after the same thing. Lee, Clifford, Tom, and others (Dave Douglas, Clark Terry, Hubbard, Dorham, Wynton, and new guys like Pelt and Akinmusire) were pushing toward a certain soloist ascetic.

Faddis is more in the classic screamer-lead-trumpet tradition that includes Cat Anderson, Maynard Ferguson/Stan Mark, young Dizzy, and Arturo. It's not fair to compare the two. Faddis has "different technique," not poor technique.

  • @womb0womb0 I agree. Without his high notes where would he be?

  • hate that mouthpiece!

  • Yep - My son and I just saw Jon here in STL together with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Billy Williams on drums, and the lovely Ms. Linda Oh on bass. Wow....just, wow. They played two nights at J.A.T.B. on Washington, as well as several high schools. Jon gave a quick lesson to my son on trumpet. Not only brilliant musicians, but just fantastic ambassadors, role models, and teachers to our young people. They are definitely "passing it forward." Thanks Billy, Jon, Cyrus, and Linda !

  • I don't like his sound in this video.

  • @theirishone123 you mean epitome? lol
