hi mark please can u help me if i have 5 speed light and i'm planning to buy pocketwizard miniTT1 and FLEXTT5 can i use my 5 speed light even i have 1 flexTT5? hoping for your responds to me. thanks:)
Erics1959: I like to shoot wildlife. I just bought this system to my D700. Prelimunary for taking picture of nocturnal wildlife like wildboard, fox etc. in interesting creative ligthing. This would not be possible for me without this pocketwizard. By all means.. I´ve not done this just yet, but during 2011 I will. So it is also for creative use by us who tries to get those not seen-before pictures.
High speed sync is way less powerful than native speed sync. What's the use if you only have max a couple of meters when used straight on without any light modifiers? I tried it with other systems - it doesn't work on big subjects. Manual rules, so far the fastest one can go with DSLR's is 1/250 and some rare examples 1/500 of a sec before you start loosing flash power. Leaf shutters of Hasselblad lems shutter mechanisms allow crazy high speed sync with full power because of their design.
Please can you confirm whether this set up will give me the same control as using a Nikon SU-800 ??
And if I place one of these on my D700, and one on my Nikon SB900, will my flashmeter with intergrated PW (the Sekonic L-758DR) trigger the flash in order to get a reading ??
I'm thinking of returning my SU800 for a refund so that I can get this setup instead.
@Jez2008UK Only reason you would switch systems is because SU 800 is infrared so if you shoot outside in direct sunlight for example it might not fire because it can't "see" the signal. Where as PW is radio triggered. Hope that helped- seeing as you never got a reply after 7 months and I just clicked this cause I'm bored thought you'd like to know.
Well maybe some day I might find myself needing to fire all 26 of my softboxes from a 1/4 mile distance. Then I'll probably have to invest in a 800 mm lens so I can get my subject to fill the frame. iTTL only exposes for the brightest subject detected by the sensor in the center weighted area, thats why most pro's shoot strobe manual . iTTL is great for paparazzi's . Over engineered , over priced .
If anyone has questions about the quality of Marks shooting skils they should Google him. Mark is one of the top commercial photographers in the North America. He also puts a lot back into photography. It never fails to amaze me how bitchy some people can be. This was a quick promo for Pocket Wizard, not a commercial shoot!
Maximum range the Nikon sistem <10 meters and you have only 4 chanels. Using Pocketwizard the maximum range is 240 meters for i-TTL triggering and 365 meters for standard trigering and 52 Channels over 26 Frequencies (using Pocketwizard FLEXTT5 Radio Tranceiver and PocketWizard MiniTT1 Radio Slave Transmitter
@spacefoodstix I have no doubt that he is way better than you and the other followers of his. This would be the idea of being a fanboy/girl - to know less than your idol.
Hope it works better than on the Canon system. Short range (10-20 ft), needs to be reset every time you use it, and in the case of the TT1 has a battery that is not easy to come by.
Over the next few months we plan to replace all our PW's In use on Canon speedlights. This is going to be costly, but not as much as it could cost us if we don't.
At this moment in time the only way we can get this junk system to work is by using Flex 5's on our cameras and placing RF filters on our flash heads.
You need to contact PocketWizard and get the AC5's and upgrade to firmware 5.0. The battery in the MiniTT1 is easily found at most stores if you know where to look.
Best of luck to them, but until the shoe is made of metal I cannot consider it. Plastic breaks too easily, and in all my years of work I have never broken the hotshoe on any of my cameras, no matter how rough I've treated my equipment.
im a nikon shooter and im happy its there yet but it will be as expensive as the canonmodel so for now i will have to use my ebay triggers until i have ebough money for a pocket wizzard
sweet, finally, dare I say. but Nikon has CLS, which is good enough for me for most of the time, but if this will also work that flawlessly i'm buying it.

Is there a technical reason why Pocketwizards are not available for Nikon yet?

Oh to be able to use high speed sync without line of sight!

1/400 sec is nice, for a start. With respect, how bout some 'extreme' settings? Shutter Priority and 1/8000 sec?

@kwanyx I'm sure Mark would've if the sun was out. :)

why use the pocketwizard if nikon already has a built system?
ch1c0h 1 year ago
For me, mainly the fact that pocketwizard uses RF, whereas Nikon CLS uses IR. Not being limited by line of sight is a big plus for me.

135Wierd, Im sure you can, You have to turn on Auto Fp in the menu, E5.
As for the flex, Ill stick with my Quantum T5D-R Q Flash and FreeXwire's :-)

Can you use auto FP with the Sb-900 activated by the pop-up flash of a D90? (so off camera flash)
Thanks

If you'd bothered to look at his other videos, you'd realise that he's a pretty damn good shooter.

I agree with the comment on CLS below, if I have to buy a PocketWizard for my Nikon lighting, it should be as good as CLS or even better.

About time this gear is Nikon-ready. I could definitely use it for location shoots.
