Regarding public bans, I would rather see each bar, restaurant, etc have to declare their establishment as a smoking or non-smoking place, rather than city or state wide bans. Give the smokers a place to go. Give the non-smokers a place to go. No 1/2 & 1/2 places. Then let the free market decide what will prevail. I think many places will voluntarily choose to ban because that's where the most business is. Especially restaurants.

Do most people who smoke die of lung cancer? Not necessarily. They also die of heart attack, pneumonia, stroke, and other causes as well as lung cancer. Do most people who die of lung cancer smoke? Yes. Over 90% of lung cancer patients were smokers. Smoking is dumb.

But . . . I am a strong advocate of liberty, including the liberty to dumb things. I'll explain in the next message.

Good post! I am from Germany and what I saw in LA during my last trip, was so ridiculous. There is such a hysteria about smoking. You Americans have the most air-polluting cars in the world, your CO2 emmissions are the highest in the world, so you practically have a great contribution to killing our planet, but you care of the pleasing habbits of other people. 8th August 2006 the HSE in their document OC 255/15 article9 state

" HSE cannot produce epidemiological evidence to link levels of exposure to second hand smoke to the raised risk of contacting specific diseases".

20 pack years(pack a day) gives an increase of emphysema, lung cancer, cardio-vascular problems for a smoker. I know the risks. If i choose to smoke in public, i pay more taxes for the right to do so. Second-hand smokers would have to be at 60-80 pack years to get the same type of response just on intensity of smoke inhalation alone. most nonsmokers arent around smokers that much so those numbers are on the low side. a bartender might breath that amount, but not many others.
