Isn't "Say yeah yeah" by Yvonne (on the Dade label - 1963???) recognised as the first ever recording of FUNK as we know it - produced by James Brown????
Gloria Jones (the original "Tainted Love") just let me know that Yvonne Fair's album, "The Bitch Is Black", has just been reissued on CD. It contains this song and much more, be sure to pick it up!
@funknroll LOVE Gloria Jones and Yvonne Fair!!! Have Gloria Jones' SHARE MY LOVE cd reissue as well as THE BITCH IS BLACK, both beautifully reissued by REEL.
If memory serves me right, Norman Whitfield produced this funky song for Yvonne and The Undisputed Truth did the Background on this track as well -As The Fabulous Marvin Gaye
Hey Y'all! Yvonne Fair's CD, The Bitch is Black (which featured this song), FINALLY just became available on CD!!! Look for it online, Amazon or wherever you get your music. It has a gang of photos and a really long essay that tells Yvonne's whole story! The s**t!!! That woman was so funky she probably couldn't stand herself...lawd.
Wow, what an excellent montage! This was when the term musician actually meant musician! These folks were actually talented and used the art of music to move us unlike these posers out here now. Long live funk!
I enjoyed looking at the old publicity shots, some one tell me were i could get the one of prince, it came out with his first album in right on mag around 1978.
I enjoyed it, do it again... there are many other artists LP's you could use such as James Brown, George Clinton, Sly, Stevie. Kool, EW&F,Slave,Isleys, etc. Keep the funk on!
Yvonne Fair a true legend,With James Brown in the early 60's, a member of the Chantels, married to Sammy Strain(Imperials & O'Jays)in 70's. She was in a cave girl outfit on Soul Train doing this song in'75.
i tell you, CD covers can never compare to the style and power of 1970's album covers. I remember as a kid, just being spellbound by them. Most of the time, i never even heard the record, but i always remembered the covers. This was a great video. Thank you.
Great stuff. Can't get enough of that funky stuff. Yvonne Fair recorded for Motown and was in the 1972 Diana Ross film "Lady Sings the Blues" as a fictional nightclub performer who taunts Billie Holiday for being too, um, lady-like. Sadly, Ms. Fair died in 1994.
I have this album "The Bitch Is Black" It's very rare even it's on Motown and produced by Norman Whitfield. It must have been a little too raw for Motown! They need to reissue this on CD. By the way, the male voice you hear doing the ad-libs at the beginning is none other than Marvin Gaye, uncredited cameo!
OOOOOOOOOOOh YEAh!!!! i love every of those bands and artists!!!! THANK YOU funknroll for bringin us so much funk!!!!! hey! qhere did u get all those pics? many of them haven't seen before....same with eddie hazel pics and betty too in other videos
Most of them come from my albums, CDs, and magazines. Some come from the internet when I find something extra cool. The Eddie Hazel photos are mostly from the collection, though quite a few came from the great P-Funk isssue of the HipHop magazine, WAXPOETICS. Track it down! The recent issue was a Betty Davis cover story, too.
Betty Davis was so gorgeous similar to Freda Payne. Shuggie Otis is just beyond words. "WAR's" song "Me & Baby Brother" i recall as being one of the funkiest ever.

Edwin Starrs version of this song is the best I've heard, though Patti LaBelle also recorded an excellent version of Funky Music.

I love the Temptations' version of this song, and Patti LaBelle's, but this one actually best fits the title. Those were funk-y, but this is FUNK.
