  • It seems that Ray tried to clicked the Like buttons 3 times

  • You can see in piano players like these two as well people like art tatum, and bill evans and all those great jazz guys, when they play you can see the pure joy they get from playing! Thats how it should be.

  • Nice times! I wasn't born in 74, but I really appreciate the old stuff like this. Can't go wrong... Oscar and Ray for a boogie time!

  • hi forget the technical stuff guys they are two great piano greats enjoying themselves playing blues man GREAT

  • What electric piano is Ray using. I thought that's some kind of Rhodes, but now I'm not sure about it..

  • @JazzPerfomer

That is most definitely an 88 key Fender Rhodes suitcase model. Probably around a '68 model by the looks of it.

  • @subg88

Thx for the reply. I'm pianist and bassist, so I'm not really into electric instruments. ;)

  • I know he used Wurlitzer a lot in the 50's, but I'm not sure what he uses in the clip.

  • @Barrelhousekjell The keyboard is called a Fender Rhodes.

  • I only wish that this generation would take time to listen to , understand the true meaning of genius and respect what these two have contributed to the world of music and entertainment.

  • 2 amazing musicians, 2 amazing people

  • How is Oscar holding back; Ray was a guest on his show and this was the number Ray wanted to do (and did in his own live shows). Oscar is is just sitting in on his own song.

  • Is any band or anyone out there today playing this kind of music today? I just fell in love with this stuff! Amazing!

  • @searcherboy Naturally. Oscar could play rings around anybody!

  • where in the blue blazes did you find this??

  • I can't tell you how many times somebody has walked into my office while I'm playing a record by Oscar, and said, "Is that Ray Charles?"

Same thing with Howard Roberts and George Benson.

    Twin bothers from different mothers.

  • This is why the word Cool was invented!!!!!!

  • Very Rare? Not anymore, thanks for the upload.

  • Ray: We just like to be left alone... XD

  • Is that? Could that be? Louis Bellson on the drums?

  • What was the name of the song?..Ray was revolutionary on that electric piano and did anyone notice Peterson's hands..wowwwww

  • What was the name of the song?..Ray was revoluationary on that electric piano and did anyone notice Peterson's hands..wowwwww

  • Look out! Man, this was great!!

  • listen to Ray Charles instrumental jazz albums from his early days they are stunning. Oscar Peterson is not holding back at all they are different, both sublime stylists. There is nothing standard jazz about Ray Charles, he was as much an innovator as Peterson. Just sit back and enjoy rather than try and decide who is best, that is an inane comparison.

  • It's amazing to see the two together, and compare their styles. You can't really say who's the best - they are both so high in hieraki that lowlife pianists such as I cannot even see them. However, they have very different styles - so instead of saying one's better than the other, I'd say each of them is the very master of their own aspect of jazz. I'd say Ray is more standard jazz, while Oscar is more bebob? Comments?

And of course they both master the beatiful art of the blues/jazz-genre.

  • I believe that this song is titled"Blues For Big Scotia". Fantastic playing by two giants of jazz. It appears that Ray Brown is on bass. Thank you for the posting.

When and where was this recorded?

  • That was a great clip! Ray Charles played a lot better than I would have expected. Oscar is very kindly trying not to outshine Ray.

  • Oscar is holding back. How polite AND scary is that?

  • @trojanowl ...oscar wasnt holding back at all...some times less is more.

  • @trojanowl Can't have two "Alphamales" in the same song. It'll ruin the sound playing too much on top of eachother ;-) Oscar Peterson was a great piano player though and I'm sure they had much respect for eachother.

  • Thank you for this rare recording!!!

  • Oscar's solo is way too short. It would have been nice to see him really unwind. Ray was great, but pianist to pianist, Oscar played rings around him.

  • Brilliant !!! Fabulous posting!!

  • fantastic those were the great days my friends when swing was the thing many thanks freaky.

  • yeah i agree, theres only count basie and ray who can successfully duet with oscar. He's so damn good everyone just cant keep up with him. he's simply in a league of his own. Oscar's the man, but ray is just on fire in this vid too! what a duet this is! thanks for posting. ;-)

  • Many have failed duetting with Oscar (including Herbie Hancock).

Ray Charles is the only one I have seen so far who can deliver the kind of punch & soul to actually make it a duet of equipollent partners.

And unlike others, he does not need many notes for it.

  • 3 people are blind and clicked in the wrong button!

  • que maravilha!

    that's a really great video!

  • Thank God there is no velcro around. These two would be stuck to the roof!!!!!!

  • Lovely!

  • I was just waiting for Ray to hit the mic with his head haha.

  • And on the drums Ladies and Gentleman - Mr. Louie Bellson - These men were artists.

  • what i would give to have seen this in person

  • My dad used to take Ray from the train station in Bunkie, La. to the Evangeline Club in Ville Platte, La. to play, in the late forties..

  • Mercy, mercy....

  • I almost died watching this!! OMG!! Ray&Oscar on one stage..! my 2 fav piano players! This was crazy! again, I almost died!!

  • Is ray playing on a Rhodes?

  • @bassgc90

I think its a Wurlitzer piano, the same he used in 'What I'd say'.

  • Pure heavan. How lucky we all are to be able to watch such fantastic musicians.

    bob Beadman. Hong Kong

  • i need to learn the ray bop!

  • a masterpiece!

  • fantastic ;)

  • One of the greatest joys of my life, to meet Ray Charles.

What a talent what a gentleman.

Always remember and love his talent.

  • I have to catch my breath after that performance...whew!!

  • AHHH Yes Brother Ray, Love'em

  • Jamie Foxx acted him so bloody well.. that stutter haha i saw that in Ray

  • IMMORTAL GIANTS!

  • what can one say only thats talent boys and girls

  • Too cool for Jake & Elwood!

  • Man thats what i'm talkin abou t/ great to see this clip was recorded at the time. Nice chops!

  • Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Oscar at his best, and Ray's soloing is the just purest Southern blues you'll ever hear.

  • @captainate yes, my english is not so good but i try to learn more.

  • For A good laugh watch

    Keith Emerson & Oscar Peterson

    This video is good

  • Whoever posted this gem, thank you!

  • Oh dear... two gods in the house!

  • Four of the best hands to ever be layed on the keys. That was EPIC.

  • There was a Jam session on youtube some time back from this same show when Norman Granz introduced Lockjaw and all the others ....and at the end of the video Oscar thanks Ray Charles....this is my first time seeing this portion.

  • I attended the recording of this TV show over three days in Toronto back in 1974. Took many photographs and got each performer's autograph on each. I grew up with Oscar being my Dad's best friend. It was pretty cool.

  • @Sprinterfour wow, Oscar was your dad's friend! How cool is that!!

  • Oh my God!!! Here Ray is exactly like in the movie "Ray 2004" ....Great actor is Jamie Foxx

  • That kicks such hard-core ass, it is unbelievable! Two legends.

  • Legendary. A bit dramatic from ol' Ray there but that's just the way he was. Solid authenticity. They should've opened a blues bar and called it Charles an' Peterson though it sounds a bit more like a Law firm, an' we can be havin' none of that now can we, all in black an' white?

  • @vimana19 Ray aint acting. No drama there. That's the real thing he's feeling.

  • @chiguyfalco Well anyone can see that even with no eyes, however, I used the word 'dramatic'!! Chilly 'round these parts "aint" it?

  • @vimana19 Whoa! A little dramatic there, aint you?

  • @chiguyfalco Very sad?

  • Damn!

  • THATS THE SHIT !

  • WOW...It's a kind of dream team that you don't think you'd ever see...just wow...

    This is amazing!

    - 5Star, and may these legends rest in peace

  • wow wow wow!!! INCREDIBLE!!!!!

  • this is the first time i ever seen them two together. wow. oscar is always oscar. and ray is playing tasty too. ray is playing a little different here. great clip!!!!!

  • regardé ray jouer,il est si sérieux, parce qu'il a une ces idoles à côté de lui,un des plus grand pianiste du monde, oscar peterson et il veut montrer que lui aussi sait jouer, c'est génial

  • Ray played on a Fender Rhodes electric piano and the song calls Blues for Scotia, it's a great swing blues song... love it !!!

    thanx for the post

  • Ray played on a Fender Rhodes electric piano and the song calls Blues for Scotia, it's a great swing blues song... love it !!!

    thanx for the post

  • @TheEyalklein, I think it is Blues for Big Nova Scotia. It was made for his wife, from Scotia who was pregnant at the time. Sorry for my bad english, and please respond if im wrong.

  • Well Yeah u r right it just that they called it shortly "Blues for Scotia" the full name is like you said, about the wife story.. I just hear it first by you thanx... :)

  • Ray Charles likes to shake his body so much.

  • This is Jazz-Blues ar its best, Thanks for the post

  • hey, does anyone know what type of keyboard Ray used, and where could I get one?/

  • @guitarman1568 It's Rhodes piano (this particular one is Mk I, eightyeight suitcase version) Check out ebay.

  • Like the Impulse album said: Ray Charles Genius + Soul = Jazz

  • thank you, what a combo

  • id be happy to pay for a tv license if they played this kind of talent on it. Any day.

  • this jam is well how do you explain it thats why i like it so much its unexplainerbul

  • HELL YEAH !!! Listen to this Bass-Player ...

No one has this great walking bass ...

    all but RAY BROWN

  • Thank you for the post. It's a real treat to see these (2) master performers together.

Bless you, freakyflob91, you made my evening:-)!!!!

  • What a gem this is. OP had no equal as a jazz pianist and Ray was the genius who showed the way ahead for two decades. What a legacy they have left for us to enjoy.

  • This is a lot of fun. Pity the visual is ahead of the sound. It's a bit wierd watching RC nodding his head off the beat. Also a pity that OP's piano is not amplified a bit more - watch the virtually silent glissando at about 2.32.

  • I love how people post something on You Tube and declare it's "very rare". Well, it's not rare any more!! :-)

  • @tbcass

Great comment! Thanks to YouTube (along with Wikipedia), knowledge, acting, music, thinking, expressing, dancing, writing, everything, is now available to everyone.

    Ignorance has finally become inexcusable.

  • Oooh Yeeah.

Trop bien!! Merci pour le post ;-)

  • understatement of the year :

    "very rare"

  • I think I can out-do that:

    This is pretty good!

  • Awesome video, thank you!!!

  • veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy niceeeeeee,thanks :DDDDD

  • Afe maria!!!!!bela pedida!!

  • Thanks for this fantastic post of OP and Ray doing "Blues for Big Scotia" . Rays intro was a tribute to Nat Cole who he and OP were just talking about. Notice the opening riff is a lift/tip of the musical hat to Nat's opening for "Sweet Lorraine" (1:29). The audience appears to initially think that is what they will hear. I wish there wasmore, and yes -this is when talent was regularly on the telly, not "Idols".

  • thanks for posting

  • If ray bop any harder he gonna fall

  • @theallenboy At least you no he got passion! :)

  • @theallenboy Or hit that microphone lmao
