I used to watch Rocket when I was a kid great returner average receiver though. But I don't know if he was the most explosive in college football history.
The Rocket was incredible. Remember him return one for a TD when everyone knew he had to only to have it called back for a penalty. Then he did it again! After they re-kicked it.
BCeagle10: damn the indoor record was 6.00 flat by Lee Mcrae in 86? 23 yrs earlier bob hayes ran the 60yd(just about the same distance 55m=60.15yds)in 5.9 he was the first man to run under 6 sec for the 60 yd dash. hayes was WAY ahead of his time
lol he's not just a rocket, he's the michigan killer. all michigan had to do to win that game is not kick that ball to rocket...what did they do?...they kicked that ball to rocket anyways not once, but twice. i'd rather get pentalized for kicking the ball out of bounds on purpose than kick that ball to rocket.
"Notre Dame football All-American Raghib "Rocket" Ismail ran an NCAA indoor season-best 6.07 seconds for 55 meters in the CCC championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Ismail, the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, set a meet and track record with his run. The previous indoor best this season was 6.14 by Ainsley Blackman of South Carolina State. The NCAA indoor record is 6.00 by Lee McRae of Pittsburgh in 1986." - Baltimore Sun 2/19/91

My team (Cowboys) had him for a little while at the end of his career. He was eye-popping. We were all going "Where did HE come from???" Reminded me a lot of Doug Flutie, actually.
@guitarbob21 i think they were from michigan fans cos they r still pissed that ismail burned em at they're home field lmao. just call rocket ismail the michigan killer.
Um got screwed out of the national title and got screwed out of the Heisman Trophy. No offense to Ty Detmer, but there is no chance that he was the better player that year. Yeah he threw for a billion miles, but he played at BYU and against nobody. The Rocket was the best player that year and there is way that he shouldn't have won that trophy and ND should have won if it weren't for a phantom call. Colorado won a game on 5th down! That should tell you about their "National Championship".
Look up pro-football-reference - Ismail's pro career was side-tracked by leaving ND for the CFL. He was hitting his stride in 1998 and 1999 - 150+ catches, 2,100+ yards and 15 TDs but a training camp injury seemed to end his career...he played again but was never the same. In college he was without doubt the best I ever saw. His speed was legendary before he played, but watch him out run guys with an angle - breathtaking talent.
Does anyone remember why he didn't really pan out in the pros? I remember him really well from college, but I remember him sort of flaming out early and then moving to the CFL or something??? When you watch these highlights it's hard to imagine him not being able to compete at the next level. Crazy fast...
Great clips but the HORRIBLE sound track ruins this one.....what's up Wheezer Guy, couldn't find a track by Whitesnake that would be better? Listening to this wants me to get tatoo-up and start smoking Marlboro Reds and drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon
@ElectroSonic15 you cant judge a player in an incomplete package!! he was not the rocket and never will be. His 100 meter might have been better but his 40 and 55 can never come close. Your talking about the rocket and he ran a 4.16 with pads on ....now demps is great but he can't run that without pads.....!!!
If I had to name Five good returners of the game in NCAA, I would have to say #5 - Charles Woodson ( Michican ), #4 - Sterling Sharpe ( South Carolina ), #3 - Dieon Sanders ( Florida State ), #2 - Desmond Howard ( Michican ), and #1 - Rocket Ishmail ( Norte Dame ). Rocket is truely one of my all time favorites.
jayron77, you talk about his top end speed not being so great but then you say he was amongst the top 10 in the 55 meters. HELLO!!!! top 10 americans. if that's not fast to you then you better pull your head out your ass and wipe it off.
I hate ND, but this guy is one of the nicest guys to ever play. He and Barry Sanders were the humblest great players I ever saw. Score a td and hand the ball back to the ref. Simple guys from good parents and families.
I remember the day he came to Toronto, literally. I was watching 6 o'clock news and then me and my girlfriend went downtown and we popped into a store to buy drinks and Rocket was getting some groceries with his Agent(i think)....nice guy and helped the CFL when it needed a big time U.S. College star....won a Grey Cup his Rookie year...and of coarse had a punt return for a TD.
@TimeKoder13 ya man. rocket was a cool dude. i still remember being downtown Toronto with my GF at the time and he was at a grocery store, i knew it was him but didn't say anything, then later that day he had a press conference saying the Argos had just signed Rocket Ismail. He was amazing, so friggin fast... won a Grey Cup on a kick return to seal it for Toronto.
@TimeKoder13 A very humble guy, when I saw him when Toronto played Hamilton - I asked for an autograph and he told me to "go F*ck yourself kid". He was a great athlete, but he was a nasty trash talker and based on his game in Toronto some years ago where he kicked a guy on the sidelines, tried to jump on his head, then tried to stomp on his head...i don't know how much class he had.
He won 24 consecutive 55 meter dash heats beating the likes of world-class sprinters Michael, Bates, Michael Green, James Jett, John Drummond and James Trapp amongst others in the collegiate level. His only loss came in the 1991 NCAA indoor finals against Nigerian sprinter Agustin Olobia, in fact Ismail was the no.1 ranked indoor 55 meter sprinter leading up to the NCAA finals.
Don't know about his top end speed(denotes 100 meter official times) but the Rockets was if not the most explosive football player in history. His time of 6.07 in the now defunct distance of 55 meters rank him first amongst footballers and in the top 10 amongst Americans.
I met Rocket about 5 months ago at a Menards grand opening and he is a great guy. I have admired him since I was a kid and it was great to meet one of my idols and a Notre Dame Legend.
the rocket was the best kick returner of all time oh ya i dont like the song choice but great vid go irish lets see if armondo allen can be like this this saturday again go irish
Rocket was the baddest muhfucka 2 eva wear da blue N gold, ND has never had another player like him since. It's just a damn shame that he never won the Heisman...
It wasn't just speed that Rocket had, watch the number of times he gets hit, but he doesn't go down. He brought some power along with the speed. A unique combination.
wasn't their clipping call on the play video intro? I remember a game against Colorado - Notre Dame ran back a kick and got called for clipping...so they rekicked the rocket ran back another one but was stop just short.... Notre dame lost to Colorado...
Rocket completely revolutinized the way college coaches today use guys with speed...for example....where do you think Urban Meyer got the idea that you need to get the ball to the player with the most speed and talent as often as possible...I.E. the way he maximized Harvin's touches. He got his ideas from Lou Holtz who realized the more Rocket touched the ball, the more damage could happen. Rocket was probably the most game changing college football player ever. Not best, but most game changing
Oh yes, it makes perfect sense. Lou Holtz was the first person, in 1988, to realize that his good player should get the football a lot. I'm glad that at least ONE coach these days still recognizes that.
Dude..I like the Gators and ND...I'm a die hard ND fan, but I live in Florida and the Gators are my team down here. Demps couldn't hold the Rocket's jock strap. Rocket returned all punts, kickoffs, played tailback, the slot, and sometimes split end. He was tough as shit, and that little middle screen everyone runs know for the slot (Harvin did it all the time) was made popular by the Rocket. Demps does not run a sub 4.2 forty. Rocket was also an indoor track champion.
brettndena i was w/u UNTIL u started talking TRACK...Dont EVEN put the Rocket in the same category as Demps when it comes to track...Demps has the SECOND fastest HS 100m time

@ElectroSonic15 you cant judge a player in an incomplete package!! he was not the rocket and never will be. His 100 meter might have been better but his 40 and 55 can never come close. tommy frazier was athletic but not all that explosive he couldnt run like the rocket and he was a qb he wouldnt hav lasted out there where rocket was playing
no we don't live in the past we just appreciate and honor what some of the greatest players in NCAA history it just so happens that a lot of those players came from ND and just saying no way will they usc will beat us this year not when we have golden te'o Kyle Rudolf jimmy and that just a few while usc lost all there linebackers there QB a few lineman no way ND loses this year when they face USC
Dude, you lost your right nut when you became an Irish fan; you lost your left nut when you became a MUredhawk (whatever that is). Now you are an endangered species: the rare "Ball-less Irish Redhawk Ignoramus". Congratulations!
Dude, first off your comment cant be true because i def had my balls when I jizzed all up in your mom's mouth, something you would not know about because you like the penis. Secondly, ND and Miami of Ohio are both really good schools and I love the fact that you are dumb as shit and cannot get in to either of them, dumb fuck HA HA HA HA HA....unoriginal little bitch
last year, whats your point? I am comparing a team that both ND ans SC played as in stanford, who SC loses to....shit i'd rather lose to syracuse over a soft as west coast team like stanford
a redhawk is a real species of a bird homie lol....what the fuck is a trojan? OH YEA, they got their ass kicked back in the day in the FALL OF TROY hahahahahhahahahhahahahaha...........LOSERS!
The Rocket was so amazing. Every time he touched the ball he almost broke it if he didn't break it. He was the most explosive football player I have ever seen.
Wow, I remember him being amazing back then, and I wanted to see him again to see how he compares to the athletes today. Man, 1988 Rocket would still dominate. Most amazing runbacks I've ever seen. Fastest player ever to play the game; makes Percy Harvin look like he's staning still.
That first play was bogus. Clipping was called and play was turned over. Clip was guy at top of screen at :42 second mark. THeres no way they should have called that.
Rocket was runner up to Ty Detmer i believe in the Heismen. In my book, even if rocket only had one leg he should have beat Ty in the Heismen Voting. Someone screwed up.
That was amazing, I wish I was alive back when he was playing. I guess I was for the last half of his career at Notre Dame. No repeats in there I saw, it's amazing how you can do over five minutes of footage of just one man. Go Notre Dame!
He was EXTREMELY talented. When he got the ball it's like everything around him was in slow motion. I remember seeing him when I was a kid and just being blown away.
at .45 seconds in...Number 13 was the defending 100 meter champion in college...Keep that in mind and watch how the rocket pulls away from him...There was only one guy who beat the Rocket in college in 60 meters...The guy beat Rocket twice...but no one could touch ismail in the 100....He reportedly ran the 40 in 4.15 seconds...He would have been great had he went straight to the NFL...but he chose the CFL instead...i would have too...the offered him record money...good for Rocket...Great guy.
This is the greatest player in history that did not to win the heisman "BUT SHOULD HAVE" and there was no blocking in the back on that play at the orange bowl
Yeah, I have nobody can see a conclusive replay to prove it to me. Too bad that got called back though it probably "helped" to set in motion the idea of the BCS.
This is still the most dynamic college football player ive ever seen.

no we don't live in the past we just appreciate and honor what some of the greatest players in NCAA history it just so happens that a lot of those players came from ND and just saying no way will they usc will beat us this year not when we have golden te'o Kyle Rudolf jimmy and that just a few while usc lost all there linebackers there QB a few lineman no way ND loses this year when they face USC
tmandsa 2 years ago
Please send us your Irish excuses after you suffer another "nice butt-kicking" at home. You are ND.
ndlostagain 2 years ago
i will bet my left nut that ND will beat SC this coming year....bandwagon SC fuckin bitch
MUredhawk1122 2 years ago
Dude, you lost your right nut when you became an Irish fan; you lost your left nut when you became a MUredhawk (whatever that is). Now you are an endangered species: the rare "Ball-less Irish Redhawk Ignoramus". Congratulations!
Red HA!HA!HA!HA!HAwks.

MUredhawk1122 2 years ago
When was the last time ND lost to Syracuse?
uscbeatnd 2 years ago
last year, whats your point? I am comparing a team that both ND ans SC played as in stanford, who SC loses to....shit i'd rather lose to syracuse over a soft as west coast team like stanford
MUredhawk1122 2 years ago
@uscbeatnd all legends that were in the past never die ass hole!

The Rocket was so amazing. Every time he touched the ball he almost broke it if he didn't break it. He was the most explosive football player I have ever seen.
4lx123 2 years ago
Tim Dwight was probably faster than both.
troySRT8 2 years ago
nope.. the rocket ran the fastest recorded 40 time ever...4.18. dwight is at least 2 steps behind the rocket..and allen rossum for that matter
MUredhawk1122 2 years ago
Wow, I remember him being amazing back then, and I wanted to see him again to see how he compares to the athletes today. Man, 1988 Rocket would still dominate. Most amazing runbacks I've ever seen. Fastest player ever to play the game; makes Percy Harvin look like he's staning still.
columbusclipper 2 years ago
Two words.
Deion Sanders.
1785ugabulldogs 2 years ago
ya maybe laterally..but not as fast as the rocket in a 100 yrd dash
MUredhawk1122 2 years ago
That first play was bogus. Clipping was called and play was turned over. Clip was guy at top of screen at :42 second mark. THeres no way they should have called that.

Lou Holtz said he didn't realize how fast Rocket was until he saw him playing tennis by himself.
KingElijah77 2 years ago 2
@KingElijah77 no...he said that the rocket was so fast that he could play tennis by himself!!
neter1999 1 year ago
Dont forget about Desmond Howard... He won the Heisman unlike Rahib, and he has a SuperBowl MVP. But rocket's speed is second to none
banksfan02 2 years ago
Rocket was runner up to Ty Detmer i believe in the Heismen. In my book, even if rocket only had one leg he should have beat Ty in the Heismen Voting. Someone screwed up.
shagdog71 2 years ago
Desmond couldn't make a pimple on rockets butt..
dallas022 2 years ago
That was amazing, I wish I was alive back when he was playing. I guess I was for the last half of his career at Notre Dame. No repeats in there I saw, it's amazing how you can do over five minutes of footage of just one man. Go Notre Dame!
winnerbauer 2 years ago
only other better college player was Herschel Walker.
marcusleonh 2 years ago
he makes the safety at 1:22 look like he's standing still. He's still pulling away from everybody when he gets to the endzone...
crazyirishnd 2 years ago
The kickoff return @ 2:55 reminds me of another that he did that was even more impressive;everybody else was in slow motion.
Don't remember the team it was against.
Wish he would have played longer.

Were's the engine on this kid???
HueGwrekshun 3 years ago
He was EXTREMELY talented. When he got the ball it's like everything around him was in slow motion. I remember seeing him when I was a kid and just being blown away.
sirmoosa 3 years ago 3
Does anyone know what his .40 was?
lewhawkv 3 years ago 2
his 40 time was an impressive 4.2 seconds, he is probably one of the most explosive returners of all time. He was a naturally gifted athlete
jcthomas88 3 years ago
No, his 40 time was a 3.9...look it up...lots of players have run 4.2's that wouldnt make him the rocket....
tomut04 3 years ago
People wree saying at the tine that he ran a 4.28, but now people say others like Devin Hester run faster.
humblephil 3 years ago
If i had 1/2 his speed i'd be in the NFL right away
HueGwrekshun 3 years ago
Rocket the greatest college running back ive ever seen. 100% humble and classy.

A truly gifted athlete the likes of which may never be seen again... Colorado should be embarassed to claim the 1990 "national championship"...

Ted Gin eat your heart out... The Rocket was the fastest man ever to play the game ever!!!
ckimbler 3 years ago 5
at .45 seconds in...Number 13 was the defending 100 meter champion in college...Keep that in mind and watch how the rocket pulls away from him...There was only one guy who beat the Rocket in college in 60 meters...The guy beat Rocket twice...but no one could touch ismail in the 100....He reportedly ran the 40 in 4.15 seconds...He would have been great had he went straight to the NFL...but he chose the CFL instead...i would have too...the offered him record money...good for Rocket...Great guy.

This is the greatest player in history that did not to win the heisman "BUT SHOULD HAVE" and there was no blocking in the back on that play at the orange bowl
tmandsa 3 years ago 3
Yeah, I have nobody can see a conclusive replay to prove it to me. Too bad that got called back though it probably "helped" to set in motion the idea of the BCS.
