I am a short,over weight , somewhat old golfer. 5'8" @ 210# and I laid off golf for the last 5 years. I started back 6 weeks ago. I have not found my swing as of yet. I was a scratch golfer and I still hit the ball a long way. I have a good swing but something is out of sorts with it. I find when I turn back into the ball without using any arm or hit force I hit the ball well but as soon as I find that swing I loose it again. What is the correct way to turn back into the ball.
I would focus on what a golfer should feel rather than what positions etc, because when your out there alone on the course thats all you can rely on is how it feels!!, theres no mirrors to check your swing plane or slow motion replay when your playing a round, so my suggestion is focus more on what "feelings" a golfer should have over what positons he should swing through, IMO..

You cant do a one plane swing without rotating your hips on the back swing which Hank doesnt want you to do so the end result is the back and shoulders get strained to an unnatural position resulting in back and shoulder problems. A skinny tooth pick like Haney can get away with it due to his slim frame but, most average build players or muscular players like tiger need a more vertical swing
When you hit it fat on a tight lie out on the course, sand/dirt and grass is caught in between the clubface and the ball, knocking the ball nowhere. However, when you hit a fat shot off the mat, the clubface will often skid right into the ball without too much lost energy/accuracy, giving the illusion of good impact position and that the swing you just made was better than it really was. For this reason I try not to hit off of mats if I can help it, and would suggest you do likewise.
Haney's swing theories are correct. The club sits on a plane and the club needs to move on that plane in an arc. Due to the physical limitations of the way the human body works, the club is moved to a parallel plane at the top.
The problem with Haney is he has NO idea how to communicate which muscle groups need to be activated, and how skeletal alignment and proper biomechanics will help the body move the club through space.
He kept yelling at Romano to do X. But he never explained HOW!
Ok understand the concept , but could you please explain a simple method by which this can be achieved , swinging on the shaft plane is fine ...but how to do it in 3 easy steps??
@HankHaneyGolf One of the worst things a golf instructor can do is to get a player to swing up on an imaginery plane. Any upwards movement will promote a slce. It will also inhibit the turn. In Power Golfer Hogan tells that we should "definitely swing back" in the backswing and that the club should "describe an arc" and that the plane is the end product at the top. Then in MF he brings in the idea of swinging up on a plane. But Hogan's swing got shallower in fifties.
@HankHaneyGolf I have a unique problem, When I play a round of golf, I do pretty well, I my handicap is circa 8.5 - 10.4 depending on good / bad week, and I've been taking the game Much more seriously, just trying to get better here and there, but for some reason I cannot hit balls in a non mat driving range for anything, Its like I dig through the ball to much? :o What could cause this, and could my shooting get better if I took it out? :O
@jdlmbgh I have the same problem and it involves many things.
There's more anxiety hitting balls at the course as you only have one chance whereas in the range you can afford to mishit and redeem yourself with good shots. The other issue is grass friction along with uneven surfaces at the course. You need to have confidence in your swing technique. One thing i do at the range is take 1 practice swing before each hit and do the same at the course to have a common ball address at both.
@jdlmbgh It's obviously hard to say exactly brother, not being able to see your swing, but keep this bit in mind: If you are coming down correctly, you are always hitting the golf ball with a downward blow, and not the ground first. For this reason if your swing is proper, you will hit the same shot the same distance whether off the mat or the ground. You are likely hitting it fat, which means the low point of your arc (the divot)is behind the ball, where it ought to be slightly in front.
@HankHaneyGolf Yes, The proper shoulder turn/twist, my buddies and i have looked everywhere for some good tips but nothing really "workin" if you know what i mean?
I'd like to see a video on how to work the golf both from right to left and left to right. Maybe if there is time in the video, advice on choosing when to hit either a draw or fade in different situations.
ok let's slow down. the club shaft is pointing at the target LINE, the baseline, at address. during any plane shift, if the club is parallel to the baseline it is no longer pointing at the baseline..........this is off plane. do you want your shaft in an in line condition to the end point, the golf ball, ....or parallel to it? parallel lines dont intersect..........dope.
why would you want the club to be parallel to the target instead of at the target. even if you are on a steeper plane than the shaft plane at any point of the swing, if the shaft is parallel to the end point (golf ball), it is OFF PLANE!!!! period. draw a line down hank's shaft at the top.......it doesn't point to the golf ball. madness.
As the club begins to build up speed and the left hip makes the first move down the target line before it turns backward, the width of the stance will hold up just fine. If you have a tendency to lose your balance, your stance might be to narrow. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m
a shoulder plane parallel to the shaft plane does nothing for me.I need to know whether the clubface is square and for that I need a swing plane from the ball to my shoulders.Hogan's pane of glass is still the best swing aid.
naw, that's not how the swing plane works. although the line from your shoulder to the ball is what the club should ultimately load on at the top of the backswing, the way you GET it there is by ensuring that the the plane of the club never changes from it's initial angle at the ball. the club LOADS on the shaft plane AS you swing the club vertically to the top. That's square.

It's the CLUBHEAD that must never change.The head must stay sqaure on the backswing arc while the hands lever the clubshaft position at the top.
