The engine absolutely must be transverse for this to work. Not inline. there are alot of gyroscopic forces generated from the crank shaft in an engine. Not sure what they were running but the car got a bit tweaked to the side.

all the engine bullshit is irrelevant rofl. the differences a differently mounted engine would have made is negligible its not worth the time. the problem was they didnt change the suspension at ALL and left it at what it was during practicing using the foam, so landing was never a factor. NOW, doing it with the dirt ramp, it rebounded wayyyyy too hard with no dampening at all and a stiff suspension and the car bounded. should have made it softer. dont know why they didnt take care of that.

I don't know if anyone noticed. But the ramp breaks away to make the flip happen. It appears to be links that where designed to break to decrease the angle of the ramp when the back wheels hit to induce the back flip...........

I looked at a few other videos and determined that there are flaps at the tip of the ramp. When the front tires hit the flaps it dis-engages the links. The ramp then drops before the rear wheels hit allowing the front of the car to have the more aggressive ramp making to front of the car rotate faster.

Gyroscopic progression. Engine spinning caused it to rotate around the engine's centerline.

If the engine had been setting sideways, the engine would have helped it keep from landing on its side...

@thepervysailor counterweights don't help, they probably had it balanced already, guessed they hoped (or forgot) the gyroscopic procession wouldn't be enough to twist it the wrong way. Here's a good video showing the procession (I called progression below) at about 20 seconds 8H98BgRzpOM

The wheel is supported on one side which gives it a twisting force on the axle, procession makes it also rotate around the twisting force. Pretty cool if you think about it.

Explained in English: When you are mid air and you give the car more throttle or less throttle the engines rotating mass (the engines rotating parts and their inertia) will cause the vehicle to turn on an axis(side to side). Same is for when the wheels are engaged to control front and rear rotation.

@junkymagi Amazing, finally someone with a form of brain on Youtube, I didn't really look that far into it but it was plainly obvious with the ramp falling away to accelerate rotation. Were as I didn't even consider that the engine spinning caused the to roll. However we cannot determine how the engine block was set there fore it's a theory among others.

Perhaps he hit the ramp at an angle causing the right hand side to lean or the car was wrongly weighted. We can only guess.
