I say, have any of you gents heard of this newfangled device called the automocar? They cost a pretty penny, but I hear they're simply smashing. I'd be willing to plunk down a few simoleons for one of those.
I wanted to rent this from my local blockbuster, but they didn't even know what the hell i was talking about, shame on them for not knowing one of the greatest classics of our whole fucking existence.
This movie is an incredible piece of history and is a showcase of the pillar of technology near the end of the 1800's. I agree with you 100%. sources: I'm going to be a videogame programmer someday. (reposted with fixed spelling)
@Alstheman37 The first motion picture was actually "Roundhay Garden Scene", do a quick search you'll find it easily, as you can probably guess it's even shorter than this one.
I can see it being shown in a highlight of man's achievements. I can also see a caption scrolling across it in that same highlight saying "Please stay tuned for one hundred and sixteen years of crap."
The people who think this is stupid- it was revolutionary. In several hundred years time, people will be laughing at all the amazement at 3D. Also- people still like the sneezing panda. Need I say more?
When the youth of today call this"stupid" and shit" not only does it show the stupidity of youth it also shows the complete ignorance of historic events; Okay mind you this isn't exactly a recording of the actual sinking of the Titanic but it was remarkable at the time. It would be comparable to (for the youth) never once hearing recorded music and all of a sudden BAM the I pod is invented.
At the end he looks like he had done something incredibly witty. Well, in 1896 not many people were actualy able to sneeze. Today it's different of course.
Regarding description: This was one of many films produced by Thomas Edison (Ott was his assistant). Ott starred in Fred Ott's Sneeze produced by Edison. Edison produced The Patchwork Girl of Oz starring Hal Roach (as The Cowardly Lion). Hal Roach produced The Little Kidnappers with Charlton Heston. Charlton Heston was in Any Given Sunday with LL Cool J. LL Cool J was in (ironically) EDISON starring Kevin Spacey, Justin Timberlake, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freedman, Dylan McDermott, Damien Wayans.
I was having some fun with the name Edison and didn't want to spoil the Bacon answer for someone else...but if you insist...
Fred Ott starred in Fred Ott's Sneeze produced by Thomas Edison. Edison produced Patchwork Girl of Oz starring Hal Roach (as the Cowardly Lion). Hal Roach produced The Little Kidnappers starring Charlton Heston. Charlton Heston was in Any Given Sunday directed by Oliver Stone. Oliver Stone directed JFK with KEVIN BACON.
The key here was Hal Roach. He lived 100 years and 10 months. He worked in films for something like 76 years as either an actor, writer, director or producer. The jump from Patchwork Girl in 1914 (his first actual credit as an actor) to The Little Kidnappers in 1990 (his second to the last film) was the entire span of his career.
@mc0mich I completely agree with you, although I believe that the terms "youth" and "stupidity" have always gone hand in hand with one another throughout history. It is not just today's youth, and you can't let the ignorance of some affect your views on the majority.

dude, back in 1912 this was epic. It was totaly unheard of. 5 million people wanted to watch it because of how amazing it was to them. Sure, nowadays it would suck worse than High School Musical3, but this was momentous. seriously, please think about what it would be like back then. and just in case you were joking, i think it would be much more back then lol
Lol, I was (or right now am) doing essay of History of Films when I found about these old films made before 20th century. But when I watched this film, I was like: "...Wtf?! People paid money to see this?! And that guy isn't even sneezing, he looks more like falling asleep and then waking up right away!" XD
the first movies are the most interesting ones, because, in my opinion, Edison sat down with his invention and went, "Okay, I can record motion and project it on to a screen, but what the fuck am I going to film?" it's like paintings made by the inventor(s?) of canvas.
I was preparing my finals for Film History. I was reading about Fred Ott. I think it`s great to have this material available. Thanks for posting. Wish me success!! lol
People should read the book instead. There's a lot of stuff they had to leave out when they adapted it into a film.
Still, Edison's DVD commentary has some interesting insights, like Fred Ott's constant demand for Kleenex. He also mentions how he originally wanted Russell Crowe for the role but he was too expensive and also wouldn't be born for another seventy years.
Well, you probably could actually. Say that Fred Ott was in a film directed by Thomas Edison, and then find a film actor who's portrayed Edison in film - and then connect that actor to Bacon in 4 steps...and voila!
