I worked at a factory in New Hampshire USA that made all the heatsinks for the Krell monoblocks.I personally must have made 500 of these heatsinks. Loving care go into all the Krell components, are are handled with white cotton gloves after machining.
Upgraded to a KSA 300s and now have pretty decent sound. Need to upgrade my CD player. I came across your post looking for 300s repairs to see if anyone has re-cap'd their amp. I would like to upgrade from the electrolytics to good audio grade caps.
That gloss black is Bee-you-tee-full! Did you have the covers painted like that? Is it laquer?
I have a set of Duetta II's upgraded to Signatures. I actually think I liked the darker sound of the II's better. I was running an Aragon MK IV amp. Not quite enough "UMPH" to control the ribbons, but sounded sweet at lower levels.
@steveissosteve - nothing really Steve, because of their low ohmage at certain parts of the frequency. They are a difficult load and require a very muscular amp that can deliver well at 1 and 2 ohms. Most solid state amps don't perform well enough to drive these! Only big current makers like Krells and Mark Levinsons have enough grunt to drive these babies.
@mrtheoden The sunfire signature stereo amp is 400 WPC into 8 ohms! 800 Wpc into 4 ohms!! 1600 Wpc into 2 ohms!!! 3200 Wpc into 1 ohm!!!! and anything less than 1 ohm it's a welder!!!!! Bob's mono block silver Cherry seven can also drive these speakers convincingly!! Bob Carver has scintillas he hooks his amps to so this is not theories!
@steveissosteve Yes, but you asked of tube amps that can drive those speakers ;-) I'm not really that familiar with Carver amps but I've heard good things about them.
@mrtheoden The Cherry silver seven's Bob built are mono blocks with 20 Tung sol KT120 Power tubes each!
Like over 900 Watts per channel! He tested them on the Scintillas and when someone asked the question on the auction whether these amps could drive the Scintilla's he said with great aplomb!
@49kasey There will always be a select market for this kind of exotica but in 20 years time the popularity of yester years golden products will indeed be lost to a generation of younger people who prefer solid state devices, so in one respect the ipod and other instruments will be the governing dominator when it comes to audio playback, but the high end market will still have its neeshe market. I have had around $150,000 worth of equipment and...
I'm on a very modest budget and just picked up a pair of the entry level Magnepan MMGs. I raised them up a bit too. I'm driving them with a vintage Soundcraftsmen amp and preamp fed by a squeezebox and an outboard DAC. They struggle to hit below 60Hz so I might build a 10" low QTC sealed sub to compliment them.
I still prefer my main system over my magnepan system - you can see my vid called "Awesome song!"
What is the point of making such a mediocre sounding video trying to show off such expensive equipment? You have proven nothing! But you have wasted webspace.
It really sounds like crap and you should be ashamed.
@49kasey This equipment is not expensive - it is just a small part of the history of hifi equipment which I have kept alive instead of replacing it with some "modern" ones. If you think that some music in Youtube sounds good I propose you to go wash your ears. In case your comment is somehow related in the sound the equipment produces IRL you do not know anything about what you´re talking.
You are now the one who wastes my time. I am quite sure that you do not own the Internet or the web space.
@verbaalikko There are many demonstrations here that give a realistic representation of what loudspeakers sound like listened through phones. Even unbaffled single wide-range speakers sound great recorded with a Sony video camera. What I am saying is that there is recorded music here that sounds very good. Yours does not, like it or not, so go wash out your own ears! I've been listening to recorded and live music for almost 60 years, so don't say I don't know anything. Your audio is very muddy!
@verbaalikko The fact that you say that you don't think your equipment is expensive or modern and that it's only a small part of what you own speaks volumes about you because very few of us will ever be able to afford anything like what you've got, mister. Likewise, the fact that you totally blew off this demo shows that you don't even value it or really give a damn, rich bastard.
@49kasey En verdad solo hay gente que habla por que tiene "hocico" no tienes idea de lo que es un buen equipo de audio, claro que no se aprecia en las bocinas de un ordenador, seguramente eres un pendejo que cree que su ipod es lo máximo.
@49kasey wow im surprised at your criticism of this guys video. The fact that he made it is enough to be congratulated on pal. I am very grateful that hi end audio is being kept alive with cool videos such as these - regardless of the quality of audio. In 20 years time all these components will probably be forgotten and lost in time but at least we can have some record of them weather it be visual or sonic.
@zark212 Just because someone knows how to produce a video on Youtube doesn't rate congratulations. There's this vinyl neophite who knows next to nothing "educating" DJ's on setting up turntables. He has several videos giving misleading information. I happen to know someone who owns the Scintillas and this demo is pathetic! I'm offended that he even bothered with such a half-assed attempt at "showing them off". Does he even have ears or just deep pockets?
@49kasey I think you have completely mis interpreted my point 49. I was merely commending the guy on bothering to make a video with this set up and if anything showing the world what a good hi fi set up can be. I plan to do some videos of my set up soon. You mention knowing people who own apogees, well let me tell you I have had many pieces of hi fi for most of my life including magneplanner, Decca Kelly ribbon horns and and many many more and also friends who own Apogess.
@49kasey Currently use Decca kelly ribbon horns in Decca cabs plus Accuphase DP70 dac , Sony 557 ESD transport, Croft valve power amplifier, Audio research dac, Oracle Delphi Turntable plus Souther parallel tracking arm. Croft 2 box valve regualted dual mono pre amplifier, Valve pre amplifier designed by me and a good friend. PLus have had many Audio research pre amps, Magneplanner speakers, Freind has had 4 types of Apogee speakers, AN IPOD USER I AM NOT.
@49kasey Whats your current system and how long have you been buying, Also how many manufacturers do you know and how many designs have you created. I deliberately did not mention my system in my first comment because I was remarking on the fact the guy had done a great video on his hi fi - that is the point of this topic - not miss interpreting information and then arrogant.
@zark212 Well, the guy did a lousy demo, I don't care what anyone thinks. And for what it's worth... I have been involved with putting together stereo systems since 1965 and began selling them in 1967. I've set up many hundreds of turntables and cartridges and have modified several loudspeakers. My focus is on transforming sow's ears into purses, so to speak. You seem to be very illiterate despite all your expensive equipment. When did you drop out of school and how did you make all your money?
@49kasey Well, For one I did not leave hi school - quite the opposite and I also gathered the funds from various sources, Some people take holidays and other activities, A lot of the gear was second hand. It adds up to $150,000 and above but I actually paid less because a considerable amount was second hand. The valve pre amps from Glen Croft are amazing but he could never sell himself which is possibly why he is not well known around the world.
@49kasey Again you are confused. I didn't say hi end audio would be dead. If you had any experience in this field you would accomadate the fact that these speakers and many more were made at the "golden stage" of hi fi production and that because of today's current global mind set aswell as commercial basis, these ventures into exotica are few and far between unless you have unlimited funds. So you think im a 20 year old ipod user then, you couldn't be further from the truth if you tried buster
@49kasey The only one who should be ashamed is yourself for making such an ignorant comment. Leave the appreciation of this equipment to those of us who know what we're talking about.
Actually those amps are not oversized at all. If you google these speakers you will soon notice that there are about 10 amps total that can drive these properly in the whole world, most of them are Krells.
i have to say im not keen on the look of those sitting in my front room however im sure they sound great, i think i will stick with me FUNKTION-ONE :D
@a2dds Those are the small ones. They also made a KRS 200 which weighed 100 Kilos each. I once had to carry a pair up 2 flights (with another person).
I have a pair of Dynaudio Audience 42 + Martin Logan Dynamo subwoofer. You can see those in this video as well. They are here just for TV use and for possible background music. Additionally I have a pair of Magnepan 1.4 in my bedroom :-)
you need better music to show their quality!
