Well, this is a history lesson and a revelation in song! Thanks profoundly! It belongs in classrooms helping our young to develop historical awareness and empathy, and I may get the chance to bring it there I hope. Exile, transportation, slavery, and worse. The path to universal human dignity and civil liberties has been a long one indeed!
Wonderful rendition. I've listened to it a bunch of times. I understand Cara's new cd is out and she is celebrating a new baby. What a blessing she is.
Of all the songs that Dougie has written, (& I am a great fan of his awesome talent) for me this is his best. To come across it performed by 2 of my other fav. artists is something very, very special indeed.
Perfect. I sat in the front row at Taunton's Brewhouse Theatre last night. I have heard Dougie Maclean's song and have a copy. This is a beautiful rendition. We are lucky to have Cara and Sam around. Thanks for all the wonderful music
I heard her sing this live last week (5th Feb) in Birmingham during the Transatlantic Sessions tour. How could I not have come across Cara before ...? The clarity and pureness in her voice transfixed me and I had to search this out. Just brilliant (as is most of the TS stuff).
This song is about being in great debt, and being sent to labour in Tazmania by the english government. And longing for home, as anyone would who is being sent into indebted slavery.
Yeah, I think Cara is very obviously someone who has real talent and became famous for that reason mostly, there was no "hype" necessary to make her well known, which tends to put people off and makes them post negative comments and such.
I have a question: I saw Cara sing the first time in a live concert show of the Spanish satellite TV channel TVE International. I can't remember the name of the show (I don't even speak Spanish, just randomly zapped to that channel). Does anyone know what the name of that concert was and where to get a recording of that video in any form?
urdcult....get the transatlantic Sessions 3 DVD from Amazon. There is this and more and more great music. I can't stop playing it. it's just beautiful.
This song has a lot of feeling in it, it reminds me of home and all of Scotland. How clear her voice is reminds me of echoing hillsides and so much of Scotlands character that you can't get anywhere else in the world. Perhaps you should visit and find out for yourself why it means so much :)
gpk1027, The song isn't about slavery, AFAIK the song (written by Dougie Maclean) is about forced emigration from Scotland. The line "burned out by their masters' greed" will refer to the Highland Clearances.
I just love the song "Garden Valley", I've heard Cara singing it all over Sussex and it still brings tears to my eyes. This is a gorgeous performance that could only be possibly bettered if the fine singer/songwriter that wrote "Garden Valley", namely Dougie MacLean, could lend guitar and vocal harmony to Cara's heartbreakingly wonderful voice. Dougie said to me the other week that more Transatlantic sessions are possible, but from The Emerald Isle next time, so maybe my dream could come true.
Beautiful! Any chance this is available on CD or DVD? Longtime Jerry Douglas fan here, just recently discovered Cara Dillon. I was surprised to find Jerry playing with Cara, but I guess I shouldn't be...he has played with so many different musicians. His slide guitar fits in beautifully. He is a musical genius.
There are now two CDs and a PAL DVD of Transatlantic Sessions 3 available in the UK. Strangely the CDs are missing some stuff that was broadcast including this particular item (not sure if another is due), but the DVD has everything broadcast plus some extras.
well a PAL DVD won't do me a lick of good (at least as far as I recall they don't play on US DVD players, but maybe I'm wrong) but I am interested in the CDs. Any idea where to get them? I didn't see them on amazon...I think they had series 2, not 3.
Hard to find a standalone PAL player that won't handle NTSC these days - sorry that it's apparently still trickier vice versa. If you've a DVD drive on you computer it will have no problem, bet your bottom dollar.
Can't do links to sources here - I'll backchannel some.
o wow, I saw this on the TV and it blew me away then. The combination of Cara's crystal voice and Jerry Douglas's haunting understated steel guitar does strange things down my spine. An all time favourite, thanks for posting :o)
Cara is truly blessed with her voice,if you watch her sing it comes so easily to her.I love the way her accent comes across in her singing,so natural and unaffected.
I've watched this many times and I keep coming back to it again and again... So beautiful!

This is the first time I´ve seen Cara cry while performing a song. Obviously it means a lot to her, for whatever reason.
I´m neither Irish nor Scottish, but I love it, too.
There is something special about it, definitely.
Thanks for uploading.

KNQuail:
_Some_ dvd players sold in the USofA will play PAL-encoded in addition to NTSC. Got one by accident- Audiovox CE550DV.
Software (ConvertXtoDVD) can be used to encode PAL-dvd to NTSC fileset, which you then burn to dvd-r. Pop it in dvd-player.
Sure wish they'd release as NTSC. Meanwhile Sessions 4 dvd (PAL) is on order.
woodscritter 2 years ago
I think most newer US DVD players will play PAL. My old one wouldn't but my new one does. :)
