  • What size nail for one layer repair?

  • Great video! We had a ton of shingles blow off in a windstorm the past 2 days. Now I can do the repairs myself. Thank you!

  • An informative video. Thanks.

  • Well explained! Good video! Take care!

  • Thanks for the real detailed and informative vid. I'm the type of person who can't learn well from written instructions, but once I SEE something I'm much better at understanding it. Fixed my roof in no time thanx to your help.....

  • Hurricane Irene blew a bunch of shingles off my roof. Couldn't get anyone out to fix it so I watched this video, got up on the roof and did it myself. Not bad for a 58 year old woman! All the guys in the neighborhood are pretty impressed with me.

Thank you for making this fine video.

  • here's a tip for anyone doing a roof.

foam couch cushions are excellent for keeping you from sliding off a roof...they help cushion the knees too.

  • That flat bar is obviously very important.

  • @seocom not obviously lol REDRIPER OR Garden shovel its good ( square shovel sorry im french guy) :P 4 nails is good but 6 is better ;)

  • You can always spot a Pro by the way he holds a hammer. Great Video!

  • Good video, in fact there isn't much out there on You Tube so thanks for taking the time.

  • Can you come fix my roof?

  • Uuuuiiippppokjkllllkkzxxgfuueerrrwrewwqir

  • My shingles do not just simply pull up off there like that. there stuck down like,.. well like that would damage them to try doing that ? what do you recon for that ?

  • @imFlyPaper

if they are a timberline like shingle try doing this while the shingles are hot, some shingles work better when they are hot, others like it cold.

If you do this while they are hot, try not to tear them while separating them, take your time

  • @customit I did get the message from this video here and I got the job done. I mean that I patched a spot to keep from leaking and It only cost 26 bucks or so. but man the old shingles in the cold was well like you said was difficult, I kinda had to do it like a backward pyramid, to keep things from having a way under shingles, only the very top of the peak is a , Well its got a few nails showing for now I put some goop over it. Thanx for the reply Peace

  • So whats the method called for a renailing on a 3 and 4 shingle nailed roof?

  • @rafaeldelaflor

Sorry, I did not show nailing all areas. 4 nails should be in each shingle on something walkable, steeper roofs such as mansards require more, up to 6 nails on a 3 tab

  • Thank you for uploading it:)

  • easy and simple instructions, good job.

but u don't need 2 different kind of blades, u can do everything with the hook blade.

  • Thanks for the video - time to go give it a try!

  • Great video. Nice, simple and easy to follow. Thanks for posting.

  • Excellent instruction on replacement

    Thank you!!

  • Great video thanks. Nail gun for me though XD

  • Redoing the roof this weekend on one side. Was wonderin how to fix missing ones on the other side that was done just couple years ago. Thank you very much !

  • this guy has a lot of likes, a rarity for a roofer. good work buddy.

  • I have several leaks in my roof. I've seen many of these type of vids on youtube. This presentation was by far the best I've seen....stands hands and feet above the others. Thanks for the help.

  • very informative!

  • Many thanks for your time. You do the presentation very well and explain things nicely. We had an earthquake in Virginia a month ago and I received a crack in the kitchen ceiling. Some time after the quake, there were some "monsoon" rains from a passing hurricane. So now we have a leaking roof where the kitchen addition meets the house right above the crack. The problem area is from the interior wall to about 4 feet inward. Can you comment about roof flashing? thx

  • Clearly this is not your first time using a hammer.

  • Thanks a million for this video..hadnt seen any that deal with individual replacement.

  • great

  • Thanks for the video. I plan to use this info to fix a leak. I found the leak from the attic and am catching the water the but when I look on the roof the shingles all look great and I cannot see how the leak can happen. I will remove all the shingles and try to find the leak. Any tips on what to look for when trying to find a leak from the top when nothing is obvious?

  • @abedj1220

if it's out away from everything, remove a few shingles in the area, you should see a water trail on the felt. Look for nails that are rusted and that could be coming through the shingles, hold the shingles towards the light so that you will be able to see any holes or splits, you would be surprised how small of a hole will let a lot of water in.

  • Nice video I learned a lot thanks so much

  • Just completed my roof repair, and ran the sprinkler on it for an hour. NOT ONE DRIP!!!

Couldn't have done it without your video. I can finally put the big blue tarps away. Now that the leaking roof is fixed, do you have a video on how to fix drywall? :-)

  • Thanks very much for this video, I forwarded it to a friend who has just 1 shingle to repair. Great service to the public, thanks again!

  • wonderful very informative,i just had my roof done by a corrupt company i,m inexperienced and got a very bad deal,no drip edge was put on and tiles are nailed high and rotten tear of was shoved into the holes in the roof before they were put back ,now i have to pay extra for inspection and the job is not done ,and might have to be redone a night mare, but thank you for this information

  • Hi jvhamby5

This is my roof that I did all the videos, on a clients roof I always do 4/4. As far as sealing the holes, no I don't seal every hole unless I know that it could be a problem and doing repairs on an Elk, Timberline type shingle, yes they are hard to work with, since I've been roofing (1977) I have a good track record when it comes to roofing, worked in Fla. for 15 years where they have inspections, you don't get away with anything there. Try tile valley repairs talking about a pain

  • I hope you used Geocel, NP1 or at least Platic roof cement after disturbing the field of the roof and leaving holes for water penetrate. The other thing if you were on the clients roof and you left a 3/4 nail pattern loose you did not take care of your client very well. I would have nailed it off right while I was on the roof. Try the same repair on an Elk shingle. You'll need a blowtorch and a 5in1 tool to melt the tar line apart. Gaf/Elk is a bit easier even with the duragrip bonding adhesive.

  • thanks for the info very helpful information

  • Excellent video !

Thank you for your very helpful, ease to understand explanation.

  • Thx Gary, awesome video. Keep 'em coming. :)

  • Like many others, I have tornado damage and will be up on the roof in the next day or so to fix my roof. Thanks for your very well done tutorial.

  • I THINK IT'S FANTASTIC THAT THIS MAN, A GREAT ROOF PROFESSIONAL, TAKES TIME OUT OF HIS DAY TO INSTRUCT TOTAL STRANGERS...FROM ROOFTOP.THANKS AGAIN, GARY. WORK SAFE.

  • VERY good job. Had a few shingles blow off during a storm. I can now attempt a fix. You teach very well. Thank you.

  • Just watched the video yesterday so on my way home from work today I stopped and picked up a flap bar. After dinner I climbed up on my roof and replaced two 3-tab shingles that had the some of the tabs flipped over. Your video was spot on and the new shingles look perfect. The best tip is about going up two shingles to get that last set of nails, I didn't know about that.

    Thanks again for the advice!

  • We had a tornado come through and I had a big tree hit the house , got many crazy quotes on roof repair I have maybe 4-5 holes in my roof, The insurance wouldnt replace my entire roof so I was concerned about different colorshingles being they are 11 years old, but after watching this I plan to rip off a portion from the back of my house and lay it so it looks good . Thanks for the video you probably saved me over 1000.00, I can do this myself.

  • GARY..GOOD JOB. THIS WORK SEEMS VERY TEDIOUS...ESPECALLY WHEN I LOOK AT THE WHOLE JOB. JUST PARKING MY ASS ON THE ROOF MAKES ME VERY NERVIOUS.....& I'M ONLY SCOOPING OUT THE GUTTERS ON A SPLIT FOYER!...PLAY IT SAFE. MAKES ME INSECURE....DON'T LIKE HEIGHTS..& I'M A PILOT. JUST TOUCHING SHINGLES TEARS UP MY HANDS.

  • thanks for sharing u save a lot time and money to replace one shingle

  • Thanks so much for your very informative video. Thumbs up!

  • We call it a mason's pattern. I see alot of that type of installation on you tube. If we did that here in the Pacific N.W. it would leak. Do you find alot of those type of roofs?

  • this video help me a lot to tackle my roof issue

  • this video help me a lot ot tackle my roof issue

  • Thanks for the vid, had a few shingles blow off my roof and i feel that i can fix it thanks to your vid, thankyou

  • I like to see people that are proud of what they do and do it right, these kind of folks are hard to find, I like your style, great video

  • Wow, thanks for sharing this. I just discovered a grapefruit size hole in my storage shed and didn't have a clue how to fix it.

  • Thanks for the video, brother! I just replaced 7 shingles - no worries. Now I feel like I can do the whole roof this spring!

  • Well done! You are a great instructor. Thank you!

  • Great Job!!

A shingle fell of my roof. I watched your video and feel confident I can fix it.

    Thank you

  • Great Job!!

A shingle fell of my roo9f. I watched your video and feel confident I can fix it.

    Thank you

  • Was watching your vid, and I must say that you look exactly like me i guess we all have a twin. I am roofing a

130 ft millhouse in vermont and will be doing the plumbing and putting the vents through the roof soon. The house has been vacant for 30 years and will be restored to its 1850ss glory.

  • @wsuters

That's what they say about having a twin, love those old structures and all of their beauty. i also do a lot of remodeling and the older the better. I'm set up to duplicate mouldings, doors and anything else, something about making instead of going out and buying the things you need (if you can find it) to do a job is more satisfying. Sounds like a fun job and glad you're staying busy

    Gary

  • Great video, thanks!

  • Thank you for sharing your knowledge. In a recession like this people are having to learn how to do everything for themselves.... or they can't afford to do basic repairs on their homes. Merry Christmas & God bless.

  • In an attempt to repair my own roof (with no experience by the way), I watched a couple of videos. Your video was the most helpful, well explained and in detail. Thank you very much.

  • awesome instructional. excellent teacher.

  • Thanks to everyone that has left comments regarding the videos, I'm glad that they help and hope to put some more on soon

Merry Christmas to all and I hope that the following years get better and people are able to find jobs so that they can get their lives back

  • @customit Infomative steps made simple. I really appreciate it... Thank you very much

  • I just fixed my roof with the help of this video. Thank you very much Gary!!

  • great video, helped me a lot! thank you for your time.

  • With winter around the corner, we need to inspect our roofs thoroughly to make sure there are no loose shingles.

  • great video thank you

  • @greenjack7922 jajajajajajaja estupido

  • thank U so much for the class.

    u help me with this.

  • @greenjack7922 I'M MEXICANO AND I'M A EXCELLENT ROOFER,SKIN COLOR DOES,T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE ,I DON'T WORK WITH MY SKIN I USE MY HANDS.

AND BY THE WAY THIS GUY JUST SAY NAILS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE 1" ABOVE THE CUT OUT AND THATS INCORRECT NAILS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE UNDER TAR LINE JUST ABOVE CUT OUT. (READ INSTRUCTION BEFORE REPLY)

  • awesome explanations about where to nail and how it should be done...

  • @ryantfinchum NAILS SUPPOSE TO BE NAILED UNDER TAR LINE JUST ABOVE CUT OUT. SOMEWHERE AROUND 3/8" ABOVE CUT OUT.

AND IS FOR WIND RESISTANCE PURPOSES. .

  • Two years into a new, professionally installed, Tamko achitectural shingle roof, I have a leak on a low slope section (1.8"/12"). I got Tamko Moisture Guard Plus (on a roll) underlayment and plan to follow manufacturers instructions with application. If the shingles I remove are in good shape, can I just put them back on over the underlayment without felt?

BTW, this video helped give me the confidence to take on this project myself. Thank you for the instruction!

  • @literalisa

I always like having felt down on the decking before anything else, that's just me. When you install the shingles it's a good idea to use copper nails with shingle roofs that are under a 2/12, you don't want the nails to rust because the water can't run off as fast

  • @literalisa YOU DON'T SUPPOSE TO INSTALL FIBERGLASS SHINGLES ON SLOPES LESS THAN 2/12" , ALSO A SUGGEST TO INSTALL 3-TABS SHINGLES ON 2/12 SLOPES. THEY ARE THINNER AND BUILT UP LESS .

AND KEEP YOU ROOF CLEAN OF DEBRIS LIKE LEAVES .

    USE MODIFIED BITUMEN ROLL ROOFING.

  • Great video-very informative,concise & wonderfully made. Great job.

  • Tornado has taken some shingles off my roof. I have no intention of filing a Homeowner's insurance claim, so this video is EXTREMELY informative. I'll be able to fix my own roof and save $500. Thank you!

  • It is nice to see a vidio from someone who actually knows what they are doing! I was always taught to place the 4 nails into the sealant part of the single just above the cutout in the single. This seals the nail to help prevent leaks. Is this correct? Thanks.

  • @neutrodyne

Placing the nail into the sealant in my opinion has no benefits, just a guide line for nail placement, 1" above the cut out is a standard practice that is not practiced enough

  • Thank you for this. Very helpful

  • wish we could find the originial roofer so we could horse whip him. XD

  • Great instructional video ! Appreciate all the details - Tools, Procedure and materials. Had a racoon tear off some shingles and chew a hole through the roof leaving quite a damaging leak from the rain last week in Massachusetts. Adding a little flashing over the hole and a few of hours work, your video shows the exact repair that I need to make. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this video for those of us who do not do this type of work as a routine.

  • Great Video! Thanks we had some shingles blow off a few days ago due to the wind.. This is SOOOOO helpful and very Professional!!!

  • so if its leaking do i replace the shingles only or the black paper underneath as well?

  • @Shareallicu

If the felt is in good condition leave it, shingles keep water out, the felt acts as a vapor barrier

  • @customit Thanks!

  • Thankyou, Great video!

Nice to learn something from someone who knows their trade and communicates it well. Been on my roof for days. Guy I paid didn't use any tar paper. Thanks again!

  • many thanks for your video...last year i had to replace 44 shingles because of wind damage...we sit on top of a hill and the roof is old enough to suffer damage from 50 plus mph winds...this year the damage was 20 more...whoever put the roof on left the nails out of every other shingle as you showed...again, many thanks for your helpful video!

  • Well sometimes with time the nails come up if your decking is 1/4 inch. , very old ,and with heat plywood expands causing nails to pop up (I recommend 3/8-1/2 inch plywood OSB) or if nailed onto wood shingles( which i dont recommend anyone do is a bad source to nail to and can cause leaks).

  • Thanks for posting this and sharing your expertise. Very helpful.

  • Good video you can tell your a pro at roofing and good at teaching.

  • Thanks for the video,It Is very helpful.

  • Thanks for the video, helpful. I'll be (hoping) to repair a roof like on the G-friends house this weekend so very helpful. do you have one covering flashing by any chance?

    Thanks again!

  • I am trying to get some books together on all repairs especially flashing since this is the weakest part of the roof if done poorly

  • very helpful, clear and easy to understand. thx

  • Thank you

  • check out ebay seller buttsy465c I have a double end knife with a hook blade on one side and a knife blade on the other side all in one knife!!!!

  • Im buying a house with a slow roof leak. The roof outside where the approx. location of the leak is, is slightly bowed. I want to try and find where the leaks are coming from. Could it just be bad tiling? Or could it be that the plywood underneath is damaged from too much water? The roof is only 8 yrs. old. Thx for any response.

  • Thanks for the video !! Having never done any roofing repair i found this very helpful while haviong to replace some mismatched decking ... Thanks alot ...

  • a good tip i find is sometimes when repairing older shingels that are likely to brake when litted, is to mildly warm them up with a capping torch over the surface, it alowes them to bend alot better much like a shingle in the sun would rater then a shingle in the shad, just for you nubies out there,

  • do you nail in the same hole or a little beside it?

  • I nail beside the holes, you don't want to place a nail back into the same hole in the decking

  • thanx!

  • Thank you for very helpful instructions. You are a gifted communicator.

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one that likes to see things done right even if it's someone else's job. Good tip on grinding the corners on the flat bar, I have done mine since I was in my teens - the back /short part is best sharp though, good for regular nail removal. Hook blades are also good for trimming the edge after you strike a chalk line. I see bad nailing jobs a lot where a crew of anyone available is used and they give them air nailers to use without experience.

  • Thanks guys for all of your comments, I'll be working on a chimney this week if it stops raining, and will do some video.

Mr. rhblakeman, thanks for writing, I see bad roof jobs all the time, especially around chimneys and just about anywhere where detail work needs to be done, these areas slow them down and they want to hurry up and get done with the job meanwhile sacrificing quality.

  • hay gary its andy from fl just wanted to let you know i found your u tube clips cool job my dad saids hi

  • Hey guys, hope everything is well. Went back into roofing and planing on gettiing a crew soon, give me a ring sometime

  • Excellent, I learned alot. Thanks

  • Thank you, if these videos help, it's all worth wild

  • I tried to do it first by logic, but that did not work, then I saw this video and it made so much more sense and I was able to repair my elderly neighbours missing tabs.

  • I'm glad that you found ot useful, thank you.

  • thank you for posting this video, it helped me out alot

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you for the info. You have been very helpful.

  • Thank you

  • Awesome, great information and well explained.

  • Thank you for the kind words

  • I've lost shingles on my 3 year old home 3 times in the last 2 months, each time I hired a contractor to replace them. Although he is more then fair with his prices, i think it's high time I start doing the job myself, your video will be a great help...now I need to muster the courage to climb on my 12/12 roof. Thanks

  • you probably shouldn't do that.

  • a 12/12 pitch is dangerous to work on, do some research on safety equipment, I used to do it all the time.

  • Anything over a 6/12 starts getting dangerous especially with heat making workers less conscious of where they are and what they are doing or if the roof is damp. You should do a video for roofing showing those crappy vinyl vents and how they fail and leak over time,. or flashings around vent pipes and flashings along walls and chimneys - allprone to damge and many times done wrong or poorly done.

  • Not a bad video. Couple of good pointers in there, especially running double knife. Should give first timers a good idea of what to expect when patching a shingle system. The title is a bit innaccurate. Check out my vids to see what I mean. Good luck, and if you ever have to patch brittle, remember the step flashing trick.
