Not possible you either have to play 400 or 300 matches (I don't remember) or beat Subspace. Either way thier are many characters ahead of Sonic. You can't unlock him first.

Yes, but beating Classic the first time or playing ten matches will make Marth challenge you. Also, after 22 normal matches or beating Classic without continuing will make Luigi challenge you. So either way, it is impossible to unlock Sonic first before anyone else I'm afraid. =\
