    nice.it's cool to know where words come from especially when they come from more of the currently used languages of the world.

    it helps you to understand other languages and learn them that way by studying the origin of words.

    latin and greek are really cool languages too, some of the most ancient as well!

  • Well yes I have been there often seeing as i work in a mental hospital - I have worked in a ward for the criminally insane so there are people that have commited murder, rape and the most violent crimes. All of them are insane though - so they are not fit to serve time in a ordinary penal facility. It is at times a scary place.

  • I haven't been admitted...yet LOL, but I have visited a friend in the psych ward of the hospital.

    The reason they used to be tortured is that the old asylums were run by nuns and doctors who believed that the patients mental problems were caused by "demons" and the torture was meant to drive the demons out.

  • I was rebuilding lighting fixtures in the lock down wing at a Catholic Hospital full of psychiatric patients on Halloween. These patients were not allowed to display any art for the holiday or any masks like the other patients had done. When I asked a nun why this was; she explained any pictures or masks of false faces can push patients deeper into their psychosis.

    They are already listening to false voices so they try not to reinforce these beliefs with false faces. What do you think? Richard.

    I've never been in an asylum. However, my girlfriend was in the psyche-ward of our local hospital for a week. Unfortunately she had attempted suicide.

    There's always a negative stigma attached to that type of place but I saw it as a place of healing.

  • in the United States the Mental Health facilities are usually not given much oversight and frequently staff abuse their patients with umpunity as they are answerable to nobody. Money determines what kind of care you get. If govt money pays for the care, the govt usually doesn't want to be bothered with quality of care issues. even veterans hospitals had this problems and their supposed to be better than normal mental places.
