I never heard anyone say the Excelsior to be small. It is actually among the longest ships in the fleet. Not as buff or bukly as the Galaxy and Ambassador class, but few ships are. As for firepower, although the Excelsior doesnt match up to the Sovereign, Defiant, Galaxy or Nebula classes, it still serves as a Heavy Cruiser in Starfleet. Look at it this way...the 85 year old Excelsior class design is still far superior to any ship the Cardassians are coming up with.

I do not like Star Trek Online at all. For me and most trekkie gamers, Online does not even come close to Bridge Commander...hence why Online fares so badly in the ratings : ( I was very dissapointed by this game. I was not expecting the "arcade" style gameplay.

The Excelsior class is definately the workhorse of the Federation fleet by the 24th Century. Excellent class of ship.

The longevity of the Excelsior is truly remarkable, a testament to her designers, or the laziness of the Trek people. I subscribe to the former reason though.

She must have been designed with the idea or upgrade in mind, plenty of space for better equipment and modifications built into the initial design.

Its the most popular starship in the Federation.

It first appeared in Star Trek 3...then in Star Trek 5, 6, 7

These ships where also regularly featured in Star Trek The Next Generation, a few times in Star Trek Voyager and very often in Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

I can't say this is my "Favorite" ship, that would have to be a tie between the refit constitution and the soveregn class (Enterprise-E), but it's a well-made tribute, and it's still in one of my top 5 classes of ships.

Great ship!! A favorite it just needed the upgrades as on the Lakota. Pity the Transwarp drive didn't work. But instead of giving up on it they just gave it warpdrive instead.

It's sad,they should have kept the Constitution Class ships. Even if they are over a century old they could at least do a major refit with them. Similar with the Enterprise A.

@dragonballz768 The design of Constituion class made series problems. Constitution class ships are not that wide and do not have the capacity to hold more powerful weapons and systems lie galaxy, nebula, excelsior class ships.

the Excelsior class is undoubtedly my favorite ship design in Starfleet, and considering it's longevity and sheer numbers in service, the Admiralty agrees with me! Why do you think so many Admirals(who I assume could get any ship they wanted) choose Excelsiors?

@albatani27 Well if you think about it, most admirals would be at least over 50, and anyone over that age would remember the excelsior class in it’s prime from there childhood, so nostalgia is probably the reason.

USS Hood for the win; without having any way to source it i reckon the mighty hood would probably have the most battle honours of any single ship in starfleet before it got decomissioned (whenever that may be!)

I have a Vesper Class in STO now but it isn't the Excelsior Class. The main hull section and the deflector are the same, but nacelles, pylons, saucer and neck sections are diffrent. It's more like a successor of the Excelsior class, like the Galaxy Class was a successor of the Ambassador Class.

I would have loved to command an Excelsior lass in Star Trek Online, unfortunately the first cruiser you can get is a Constitution class. If one of the 23rd century cruisers would be still in service in 2409 it's the Excelsior class.

If you watch the previews to Star Trek Online you will see that much older ships are sill in use and have been refit.(Miranda and Soyuz class for example)

The Excelsior class is still the bulk of the fleet after the Dominion wars and after Nemesis.

There is no reason to believe they have been pulled out of service.

No, it's defenetly not in game, I'm playing the open beta at the moment and there is a room at the starbase where you can inform yourself about all ship types in the game and there definetively no Excelsior class in the game, only the Constitution class.

The Centaur comes from the Excelsior and the other two ships are much older !

I'm in the open beta too, and theres no sign of the Excelsior, Ambassador, or Nebula classes, which is a damned shame all around. No Obreth either. The Vesper exists, and it shares some design elements with the Excelsior, but I find it a poor and unsatisfying substitute.

Luckily for us Online is an MMORPG...these types of games add things every weeks...that why you have to pay a monthly fee to play.

The Excelsiors, Nebulas and Ambassadors will be added in the game later on.

In Star Trek, weapon`s yield is in the low Megatons while is Star Wars they are in the Gigatons and more.

Comparing the two is pointless.

Star Trek is based on actual science and has weapons that are more "down to earth". Star Wars is a fairytale that has no bounds when it comes to power, weapons and energy output.

They are not comparable.

Using both Star Trek Ds9 technical manuals and Star Wars technical manual, it is obvious that both are incomparable.

By comparing both, the Enterprise D doesnt even have enough power to stop an X-wing, while the X-wing has more than enough firepower to destroy a Galaxy class ship. A Star Destroyer has generates more power than a sun and would wipe out the Federation without suffering damage.

@NightwishRaven999 as Interesting as the two tech manuals are. we never see cannon (on screen) proof that starwars weaponry are more power ful than the weapons used on star trek. i have all of the star wars and star trek movies and i still don't see the weapons with multi gigaton weapons on any of the star wars ship. the only exception is the death star. and that station is so bulky that is impratical. tell me where your proof is an i may consider your arguement.

Technical manuals are proof enough.

Besides, in Star Wars ships are able to destroy huge asteroids with one shot while in one TNG episode, it would have taken the Enteprise-D`s entire compliment of torpedoes to take out a moderate sized hollow asteroid.

Anyways...I dont really care if you believe me or not. The technical manuals are there and if you want to pretend they are not, thats your choice ; )

I am not sure if I like the Mark I or Mark II Excelsiors more than the other.

I favor both over any other ship class and the Lakota is also my favorite ship but I think I prefer the sleekness of the Mark I, like the ValleyForge, the Excelsior (NX-2000) or the Hood.

Both types are awesome.
