This film is inspirational. So is the story of Chris McCandless. It's just a pity and enormous bad luck that he didn't make it OUT of the Wild. Chris made it thru the cold, the water, the rocks, wild animals, hunger... And was killed by some red wild berries. That is just wicked. That's how Nature is: marvellous and mean.

Some were smart or strong enough, or lucky enough to befriend a native to teach before the harsh weather and hunger took it's toll. Others, like McCandless...not so lucky, or prepared. I guess the real point is...he found it. He didn't live it as long as our age would have liked, but he found it. That's all that matters.

one cannot hope to simply survive, let alone live, on wild edibles that may or may not be safe for human consumption. sure, he made an effort to achieve his dream of living in the wild away from the ties of society, but there was no plan, no goal other than to escape. was he really happier out there? where were his plans for future sustainability?  its ok to walk around the world with your head in the clouds, but sometimes you have to stop and take account of what may lay in the road ahead.
