  • Probably won't get a response, but I'm getting one of these heads in a few days BECAUSE of this video. So thank you.

But if you remember, what did you have your setting at on the amp? I'd like a good starting point.

  • @earlerylander cool man. it's a monster! No idea what the settings were for this clip.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Thanks for responding! Yeah, your tone in this video is THE tone. Any tips on how to get the best out of this thing? I can't wait!

  • @earlerylander yeah if you're buying one new, it will have the volume control for the FX loop. This will make the amp a LOT more friendly at lower volumes. The amp is incredibly loud and a volume control for the fx loop helps you control the decibel output while still letting you crank the actual amp's volume to get a nice thick tone.

if it's an older one, buy a volume pedal to stick in the FX loop to act like a master volume for the amp.

  • Hello again, does the hotplate work well? I know about the volume pedal trick too

  • @JayDeeSG Hotplate works ok but the amp sounds way better using the volume pedal in the loop to be honest. scott is putting fx loop volume controls on all the new splawns specifically for this.

  • Maybe I missed it here, where are the effects coming from?

  • @JayDeeSG TC nova system

  • I'm running two combos - but using 212 cabs with both instead of the stock 112s in the combos. Using an AB box I'm sending the guitar signal to one amp which is completely dry, the other has all the effects run through the loop (except delay which is run in front of the wet amp). Do you think this sounds like the best way to rig up a wet/dry with what I have?

  • @lifeontheverge sounds complicated and a mess to transport. I guess it's fine if it gets the job done at home but I can't imagine using something like that live. Taht would be a major hassle to setup. only other way to do it would be to get a power amp and use that to send a wet signal stereo to a pair of speakers/cabs.

  • Great tone. Was wondering though (because i want to try this)...is your splawn's volume also cranked way up to saturate the power tubes?.....if this is a dumb question please excuse me, Im new to this and want to do it righ.

  • @Metalmatt718 basically the higher the volume knob gets, the smoother, fatter, better sounding the amp becomes. obviously the side effect of this is paint peeling volume from the cab. Using a volume pedal in the fx loop lets you get a lot of that smooth fat "cranked" tone without the massive decibel output.

depending on how far back you pull the volume with the pedal, you do lose the sound of the speakers moving tons of air which contributes a lot to the "cranked" tone.

  • Kiler man - I love od TONE!

  • How exactly do you hook up a volume pedal to a Head & Cab setup?

  • @hawg427 fx loop send into the volume pedal input. volume pedal output into fx loop return.

  • OK, Musicians Friend has their 15% OFF Sale ending Tues. I need to make a decision soon. I am leaning toward the 100 Watt Blackstar Head W/2X12 Cab. We will be renting a house in a few months so I won't get the neighbors pissed off. I guess I would have more options with the Head & Cab route. Even though I would never need 100 Watts. Even in Church. They run straight to the Board or mike the amps.

  • In your opinion, is there a big difference between Head units and a Combo?

Somebody was telling me that a Combo will shake itself to death over time. You would think the Amp co. would build something to prevent that.

  • @hawg427 LOL no that's a complete lie. HAAH The only REAL threat of damage is slight vibration of the tubes but most tubes are built durable enough for that not to be an issue.

The biggest drawback of a combo is a smaller overall sound and less low end. Even a cheap 212 cab will produce a more filling, deeper sound. Of course, you would lose the portability of the combo with a head/cab.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Go to the Blackstar website and listen to their demo of the Stage 60 Combo. Sounds great to me. What do you think? Let me know. It's a 2X12.

    Thanks, Lou

  • Here's a ?? for ya. On your Egnater Renegade, if you wanted to could you pull two of the four Power Tubes to reduce overall volume for better control? Would the use of an atenuator such as the one by Dr. Z be a better way to go? Pulling the tubes would be far cheaper though.

  • @hawg427 on the renegade, no theres no pairs of tubes to pull. They're totally separate pairs. The master volume on the renegade is very effecitive and works well. I have no problems adjusting it for any type of volume needed and getting a good tone is easy.

for the nitro, pulling 2 tubes is only slightly less deafening. Ernie ball volume pedal is still the best solution.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Okay, thanks. So would the EB Volume Pedal lower any of the Egnater Quality tone like some atenuators do, or is it pretty much equal tone quality?

  • @hawg427 I use the passive VP jr. mono pedal.

  • @hawg427 Have you heard the new Blackstar Venue 20 watt head they just came out with? Their clean tones are very butique like Egnater. The Blackstar goes into the High End Metal distortion end of the spectrum though. I don't really play much Metal. I like Old School Metal. Sabbath, Maiden, Ozzy. Not what they call Metal these days. Just wondering if you had seen one in person. Trying to weigh my "Money" decisions.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Which EB pedal? They have Active, Passive, Mono, Stereo. Which one is the one I would want if I went that direction?

  • Wow, that's one amazing tone! I honestly don't see why you would need better gear, it already sounds kinda holy grailish :p.

How much did that splawn cost? It says it costs $1950 on their website, but I'm wondering whether that's the list or street price.

    Cheers,

    Sebastian

  • @DVBAS that's the price direct from splawn. they go used (the nitro's) for around $1400~$1500.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Good to know, I always found those prices a bit too high and they always seem to be amazing amps. A pumped up marshall from what I've heard (a lot better than most of the stuff Marshall sells nowadays). Too bad you don't see them as often in Europe :(, I'd love to try one.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Agreed , $1,400 to $1,600 the last year on ebay.

  • @DVBAS I think they have a Euro dealer. check the splawn forum for sure though. For the money, they're actually a bargain. They're priced about what the triple recto's, marshall JVM/Vintage modern are priced at and I think the splawns are far superior. Cheaper than bogner, diezel and engl also (in the US at least). I've played just about every amp from those companies and still prefer the nitro though it's got a very different voice than the german amps.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Yeah, they really sound amazing in comparison to some other amps I've heard at the same price point. But the problem with those international dealers is that they often raise the price quite a bit (engl is for example a lot cheaper down here than it is in the US) because of shipping costs and border taxes and such. But anyhow, I still have a lot of saving to do before I'll be able to afford an amp in that price class :p. But it's good to know they probably have a eu dealer :).

  • @DVBAS yeah if you're after a heavy hard hitting british tone (like a JCM800 on steroids) the splawns are at the top.

There are a few better amps that do the same sound but cost A LOT more and are MUCH harder to find. (examples) the friedman marsha and naked amps and the cameron amps and wizards but all are about a thousand dollars more than the splawns.

  • jumper, not sure what the deal is with the audio. It sounds great in the room. It's my first time trying to actually capture this type of setup's sound.

hawg, it's an ernie ball passive VP.

Smyser, the goal is to get true stereo effects and have control over both how much of the dry signal you hear and how much of the wet signal you hear.

Hoseher, this is the first method I've tried.

  • Absolutely mesmerizing clean tone, love it. But does it sound out of phase? the sound is very wavy.

  • What brand volume pedal was that again? So this works better than a atenuator for reducing the massive volume of let's say a 100 watt amp to more room level volumes?

  • So is the point to have both clean and dirty be able to be used at the same time or what?

  • Killer tone, man! Do you have a paraller or serial loop on the Nitro?

    \m/

  • Sweet tone! Have you tried any other way of wiring your wet/dry set up?
