  • Reload is slow if you do it by the book. cheat and it's very fast.it will blast through 24 inches of steel no problem.it also carried the m- 60 machinegun. so far as 7.62 going through, don't know, though, did have a 50 cal round hit and did not penetrate , but the round shattered and got the TC in the eye. was in c,d, and e 5th cav. and 1-70 armor.drivers hatch sucked, stopped the vehicle and hatch hit me in the head knocking me into the hatch rim. lost my front theeth.

  • I always thought the M901 ITV was just a really worn out old M113 with about 2 tons of Hammerhead and gunners cupula added to it. The frame, drivers slot and insides are exactly the same as an older M113s. The ITV's we used were crowded, overloaded , stinky, fuel guzzling, "dogs' swaying around a corner at 25 .Our older NCO's told the same stories about a 7.62 round going right through the armor.

  • When Do AMERICAN gonna replace that M-113 ?? Very scary to stay inside that M-113!!

    - Just "only 1 round of RPG-7" All soldiers inside that thin Aluminum light tank go to hell ( I saw in Vietnam and South Vietnamese soldiers got killed)

    - I do not care about "today's technology" but "yesterday's problems" still carry to TODAY so the Grand Total are stilll = A lot of problems!

    - USA is a rich country and a lot of engineer....PUT THEM TO WORK! (replace that M-113)

  • @CharlieDoan

we dont use the m113. i agree with you though, i dont think it even has all around protection from 7.62mm projectiles. its main replacments are the m2 bradley and m1126 stryker

  • Are these vehicles still in the US army's arsenal?

  • @StiviGun1 Yes, and a few other armies.

  • @Trusteft What do you know about this system? How long does it take to be reloaded, for instance?

  • @StiviGun1 There are several upgrades for it, although the best one can get is on the missile itself. TOW-2 has various "versions", up to including "top -attack" versions although the most deployed are probably the TOW-2A and B.

I don't know how long it takes to be reloaded, but since it can take 2 missiles at the time and can be reloaded from the inside of the vehicle, my guess is no more than a couple of minutes, if that.

  • @Trusteft The best upgrade this missile could receive is a wireless capability. A variant that's guided by others means that wire is the most important upgrade this missile must receive. BTW, what is its penetration capability? How much armor can it penetrate? Does it use a tandem shaped warhead?

  • @StiviGun1 I am talking about what it already has. Not hypothetical.

Regarding the numbers you are looking for a)it depends, there are several versions of the missile, b) you are going to have to get that info elsewhere. :)

  • @Trusteft And why am I going to have to get that info elsewhere...?

  • @StiviGun1 Depends on the gunner, loader, and direction of the target they can do it under two minutes. The gunner has to bring the turret into the load position. The loader has expelled the empty missle containers, and he has to shove the missles upward in an 45 degree angle. The gunner returns the launcher into the firing position. The TOW is a Tubelar launched-Optically tracked-Wire guided, the gunner puts a cross-hair from the sight on to a target, ant the missle follows it.

  • @TheHoomaikai So under two minutes. I've read an article that said that "reloading takes long". Did you ever use this system?

  • @StiviGun1 I was in the 52nd Inf.,1st Armor Div in the 80's. I have been a driver, loader, gunner, and squad leader on this system. I have been a section leader in a TOW platoon. It all depends on the skills of each crew member. If the system is in the "Stow" position, it will take forever to reload it. If the system is pointed directly to the front, it can be reloaded under two minutes. Back then, the loader was the only crewmember timed; he had to get both missles up in one minute.

  • @TheHoomaikai So what was your record? What was the fastest reload that you made? BTW, do you have any info on the penetrating power of this missile?

  • What this solider was talking about? Direct hit 14,5 mm API round or 23 mm rip M113 body. 30 mm from BMP-2 destroy easy that thing.

  • @zepter00 It could've been improved with modular armor packages. It's just that the idiot politicians that run America always have have a habit of rejecting the best weapons systems programs for the military. In specially for the ground forces.

  • In VN, I saw a M-113 got direct shot by B-40 (RPG-7) (vietnam call B-40) : The .50 machine gun mount on it disappear!!! and six soldiers (south Vietnamese) got killed

and the VC sit on PT-76!! - M-72 1 round can not take down T-54/55 must shoot 2-3 rounds ..Need to re-design this to meet B-40!!

    - USA got alot of engineers! PUT THEM TO WORK!

  • @CharlieDoan Well, that's the problem. The US simply doesn't care about its military, so the human resources (skilled workers and engineers) that allocate to this sector are of the lowest quality. This is the main reason why there are so many delays in some fairly simple weapons systems programs. One example is the Lance missile. It took them 10 years to develop that simple, manually operated missile system... I can't think of any other reason than bad human resources allocated to defense.

  • @StiviGun1 You really don't have a clue about the US Army. My guess is that you'd be very hard pressed to qualify for this "sector". Lowest quality??? Which planet are you from. I doubt if you could even figure out how to fire a TOW missile, much less hit anything with it.

  • M-113 from VN war to now...the SKIN still thin...not even compare to PT-76

Common USA...do better than that !

  • @CharlieDoan a PT-76 is classified as a tank. Were you trying to compare it to a BMP? BMDs and BMPs are APCs.

  • @TheHoomaikai ..not me, I was not compare but the Vietnamese communist they compare M-113 and PT-76 called " tank can swim" (in the water or mud, of course!

  • Here at our museum,

WE have a operable M901 done up in Desert Storm markings!

You can see her at the Hawaii Museum of Military Vehicles here at Barbers Point Hawaii!!

Love the video...wish it was longer..

  • that thing is so tall that it should be used as a mobile control tower!

  • maydayfire,

There's actually a variant of the M901 ITV, the M981 FISTV, that does something like that --- it's used to spot for, call-in, and provide corrections for artillery.

Because the M981 looks almost exactly like an M901, the enemy has a tough time determining how (or if) the vehicle they see is going to attack them.

  • Where did you get this from ?

  • Brute Force: Tank Busters

  • I've took a look of the video program on Ebay, and it is narrated by actor George C. Scott (Patton).
