thing is, MLS is too easy for Altidore......or just too easy for world class footballer. The MLS has become sumwhat of a retirement home for washed up world class footballers trying to milk the last of their slowly dying career lol ex. Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Freddie Ljunberg....at least freddie had sum sense and went back to Europe. Two things MLS lacks are PASSION and QUALITY. You dont see Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard play on the national team by playing in the MLS....common sense

I believe Dempsey played for the Revolution and Howard played for the Metrostars (now the Red Bulls) If you asked me 2 years ago, I would of said the MLS really lacks quality (not so much passion). But in the past 2 years, the MLS has really stepped up. Anyone expecting to score 30 goals in the MLS is dreaming. This is not a scorer's league. It's a real physical league like the EPL.

Tim to Man United and Clint to Fulham. Look where they are now?? Putting in star performances at the top level, but sadly not every American has what it takes to make it in the big time( ironically) Feilhaber, Altidore, Adu, Cherundolo, Bradley, Keller, Rolfe all cudnt adapt to the european system.

It's the same as a european basketball player coming to the NBA. Your wrong about Cherundolo though, he's done quite well over there in Germany. Dempsey was transferred to Fulham for a price the Revolution couldn't refuse. And Howard, expressed interest to come back home to NJ to play.

Americans become MLS superstars and than european duds. why? bcuz the european football is at a much faster, quicker, brutal pace, and wen americans get ambitious and go overseas, they fail to adapt with the physicality and finesse of the europeans(excluding demps and tim). our capitalist system requires us to go to college, so by the time ur 20, u've played under several different coaches hindering your growth as a player or we have no youth academies!

European football is definitely faster, quicker (but brutal could be argued in some leagues, check out League 2, England). Yes, you americans HAVE(you don't actually have) to go to college but you are completely wrong about the youth academy. Look it up, the US has a youth academy (IMG, i'm not even american and I know this) and it's actually improved their talent. BTW, Donovan did well for Everton.

Thierry Henry(he's been getting injured and still plays) and Beckham had to bulk up to play in that league. Ljunberg was just plain rubbish and went back to Europe because he can't play that physical style. The MLS, skill-wise is comparable (maybe) to English League Championship level with the physicality of League 1. Watch those leagues, the EPL and Serie A isn't that physical.

@uberfunction Youth academies....FOR CLUBS, m8, as in players get bought at 8-14 and are developed under ONE style of play instead of multiple. I WATCH A LOT OF FOOTBALL. I maybe dont analyze it as much but....EPL(You'll Never Walk Alone :P ), Serie A(La Rossoneri/pirlo to juve), the Championship(swans: 1st welsh team promoted 2 prem), even Lg.1(hull + phil brown= magic, SO preston+pb=magic :D) Lg.1 and MLS r so poor they rely on ordinary physicality rather than rare natural born talent

The league has only been around for 16 years whereas the leagues you are mentioning has been around for decades to over a hundred years. Rome wasn't built overnight so these things take time. It's one thing to be anti-american, but if you are a true football fan, you should be happy about the progress of this sport, especially in non-football cultured countries.

I moved here from England 10 years ago so I believe I have a good understanding of sports cultures in Europe (my wife is Portuguese) and the US. If you really want to get into the economics of sports, I'd be glad to. That whole thing about US "not caring" about football/soccer is rubbish. Tell that to Seattle, Portland, the outer boroughs of NY (which is ethnically diverse mostly from immigrants from soccer cultured countries)

He has no ball control and never wins one-on-one challenges. He is actually looks afraid to fight for the ball. I don't think he won a single challenge when he took any defender on. This guy has absolutely no heart.

@Linky360 To be fair, the United States is NOT a football/soccer country. They are an NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL culture before soccer. Europe's academy system is years ahead of the US. That's an absolute fact. Altidore is a good striker but I don't think he had the skill to be in La Liga. He's more a championship level(2nd tier) in the England. While I don't think the US is that bad, they just need to establish creativity on the field. Like the creativity they possess in the NBA.

You do realize that Jozy doesnt play in MLS anymore...he transferred to Spain last summer. He signed with Villarreal and even though he got a few starts, he never really got much playing time.

Earlier this year, Villarreal loaned Altidore to Xerez. And even though they are leading the Segunda División, I dont see how playing with them is any better than MLS. Everton wanted him but Villarreal wanted him to stay in Spain to assimilate into the culture.

While playing with Xerez he will get MUCH more playing time, and thus be able to improve his skills much more than if he was playing in first division. Also, I'd say that segunda division is still better than MLS. I think it was a good choice to loan him out to xerez, so in a couple of years he can come back to la liga and he will be better than ever.

Well Xerez won promotion to LaLiga so we'll see about the playing time. He has yet to make an appearance with the team (presumably because of the toe issue he has had - although he has made national team appearances?).

I do agree the style of play in Spain is superior to MLS - and I agree that the league is suited to Altidore's talent (he should flourish there in a couple years). The question is simply playing time so he can develop. We'll see how much of it he gets in the coming season!

True, I pretty much agree with everything you just said, but remember, a team from 2nd division that moves to 1st division won't suddenly get a roster of all-star, or maybe even 1st division-worthy players. The team will still generally be about the same in terms of skill. But I think everybody watching this can agree that we hope to see more of Altidore in the future, and good luck to him!
