I think it's technically just as fast, but sounds slower for 2 reasons.

1. Larry's not playing the upbeat military-style snare part in the beginning like Rattle & Hum or Wide Awake In America, he's more laid back, just playing the hi-hat cymbal.

2. Adam's not playing his usual bum-ba-da-bum-bum, rhythmic part - he's more laid back, too, playing 1 note per beat instead of triplets & near-triplets.

You are correct, this is certainly their best song...hands down. Rattle and Hum's version of Bad is pretty kick-ass but this version is superior. In fact, I think that this show by itself, kicks Mexico City DVD of Pop Mart all over the place. This is the show that should have been on DVD, not Mexico.

R&H version is incredible to listen to and watch. Also, you are right about Bono's expression and emotions. But for some reason, this version sounds more melodic, overall. The backing "chimes" and riffs just seem more crisp. Either way, U2 is still the best live band on the planet, there is no better show. My little daughter disagrees and thinks Hannah Montanna is the best thing going. I'm trying to raise her right....lol

Dortmund in 84' is my favourite version... Live Aid one is great too, and Joshua Tree Tour versions were decent. But sadly Popmart was a time where Bono's voice was fading and was a tour that didn't really follow up a great album like the Joushua Tree Tour did, or the Zoo TV era.
