The bodies of these poor people were covered in ash that hardened, and when the site was re-discovered someone realized that the "holes" where the bodies had been, in the hardened ash could be filled with plaster, like a mould, and you could get the forms of whatever or whoever had been entombed inside, (ash can harden into a material similar to concrete, called tufa).

They had abused, and molested people they made slaves. They had people killed by animals here just like in the roman collesium.
