Simple box-pleating. It usually takes me 20min to finish a 48x408 box pleat to make Sipho's mantis. Very time consuming :P With this method, you can make insects, humans, and objects. (practically you can make anything) You can also increase the pleats by starting from 3x3, 5x5, etc. Bigger the paper, the more you can fold.
In mathematics, a paraboloid is a quadric surface of special kind. There are two kinds of paraboloids: elliptic and hyperbolic. The hyperbolic paraboloid (not to be confused with a hyperboloid) is a doubly ruled surface shaped like a saddle.
I made two of 'em today, one tiny one with eight concentric squares (including the outside) and one about the same size as yours with 16. Is it normal for a big one with lots of folds to get really flat in the middle (almost none of the peak and valley effect in the middle)? It looks pretty good, but I'm just wondering.
Red text compresses the worst out of most other colors, so next time I'd try a different color, like lime green. XD But that was really interesting. Didn't quite know what you were making until the end, but that looks pretty cool. :D
No one has commented in a year o.o This helped me with my math homework thanks :D

But wait a minute, isn't a hyperbola the opposite of a parabola? How can you have a hyperbolic parabola?

yes it can, you can carefully kind of... scrunch it in, and tighten the folds. If that makes sense.
