you can buy a bottle of trappers hide tanning solution off the internet for around $12 and the bottle is enough to tan 2-3 medium sized deer, if u only tan squirrels it shall last quite a long time, i have used it on a few muskrats i have trapped and it really works great
Sorry to hear that your dog ate the squirrel brains....go to your local supermarket meat dept. and look for pork brains...they come in a resealable container...pinch off a walnut sized piece of the brains for each hide to be tanned and freeze the rest for use later. Put the brains in a pot with a little water and cook down to a slurry...apply to the hides and rub in with a smooth round stone...works great...I have done many deer hides with this method...hope this helps... ;-D
Hey man, sorry to hear your dog ate the squirrel brains.....if you run short go to your local supermarket meat counter and look for pork brains....they come in a resealable container and it'll be enough for many hides...pinch off a walnut sized piece of brain for each hide to be tanned and add to a little water in a pan. cook the brains until you can form a slurry ...apply to the hides and rub in using a small round smooth stone until mixture permeates the hides....works great..hopes this helps

hey i subsribed i hunt rabbits with my slingshot i totley agree what i do is take bakeing soda and for the the in sid ethe skin i take liced starch and in ject it in
go to the bucther and ask for a pig brain they sell them here for $2.00 in a butter container. you can eat it to if worse came to worse where chemical tans you can't.
we use food grade pork brains. you can get them at your local meat dept.
also try using push pins for tacking your hides when you scrape them. use lots of pins on a Squirrel I would use atleast 20 or more. It will make scraping it a lot less work.
I know others have chimed in here with their hide tanning/preserving stuff...didn't take time to read them all though.
I used to use salt/saltpetre/alum mix to cure hides with, worked on squirrels, raccoon, deer, rabbit...3 parts salt, 1 part each of saltpetre and powdered alum mixed well. Spread liberally on the inside of the hide, fold over with fur to the outside, then roll it up, put in cool dry place with open end down for any fluid/moisture to drain out. two weeks later work the hide..
crack two eggs in a bucket, place the squirrel hides inside the bucket, and cover the hides about 7 inches high in milk, put in in the fridge for a week. from what i understand the hides come out and the pores are opened up perfectly, after that just scrape them dry and you should have a great pair of hides. great video bud.
yes very good. but i have been going for 3 days now and have only seen one squirrel is there anyway you can maybe upload a video of how you use your call. i have to calls and im not sure if im doing it right the areas i hunt in were full of squirrel last year. i cant find a good video of how to call them in so it would be really helpful to me.
just watched a few of your videos and i like them alot. and i love to hunt but i really like squirrel hunting its the first thing i ever hunted when i was 13 so it brings back good memories. anyhow i subscribed and thank you for all the good info.
@ap13461 Glad you liked it. I think squirrels are the first thing we learn how to hunt, good practice for future hunters. Remember, use what you take.
Use what you take! I like your style. This country needs more people with your attitude. I've been enjoying your videos quite a bit! you like the .17 hmr at all? probably too destructive for squirrel if planning to use the meat. still, a .17 with fmj bullet it doesn't rip 'em up.
@BigAgitator Thank you sir, that's what my g'ma taught me. The .17, for me, is a specialized round. High velocity, light, good for long range, but I never shoot at anything over 50 meters at the most, too much vegetation in the places I hunt. But if I lived on the plains, .17 would be the choice for small game.
@jonislow Your description is exactly the type of application that I use my .17 for. within 50 yards, a shot from the pistol is sufficient. Outside of that is where the .17 shines. I love the .22 caliber stuff. the way i found your videos was through your ammo review- it showed-up right alongside mine.
and thank you- i really enjoy your videos. They make me want to go out and hunt! Take a peek at my stuff if you feel like it.
hey, when i squirrell hunt i just dump the bodies or bury them, can you make a video on how to prepare them cause that squirrell stew sounds pretty damn good.......plz let me know when you do =)
If you search, there's already some great vids on how to clean them, as for stew, throw whatever you like in the pot. I fry the meat first to make sure it's cooked.
I've actually never heard of anyone hunting or eating squirrels before.... and my dad was quite a survivalist/forester. So... what do they taste like? (And don't say chicken. :) )
Thanks for the good video! You really inspired me to tan and use the beautiful squirrel skins as something. Bet they taste good too! :)
Today I just received my shotgun license so I will hunt as soon as possible, the weather is really beautiful so it's going to be great!
I've read something about using eggs and some oil for tanning, but i dont know if that is true. Good luck with the tanning and I hope you will post some more hunting related videos!
We have huge black squirrels up here. I used to hunt them in the fall, but I haven't in a long time. Maybe I should start again, as i recall they were quite tasty.
Hey, I live in a suburban area pretty close to a city. What's the deal with eating the squirrel? Are they good if they are urban squirrels or should I be staying away from those little guys?
amazing stuff man. would it be possible for you to make a video on your call and how to use it? i have a call but im not sure if its the kind u have. be cool to know how you call em in so well
in survival manuals they say something about drying it in the sun and rubbing ash from a fire into the membrane but thats about all i can remember. im sure if you google squirrel hide tanning you'll come up with something. those are some good sized squirrels by the way, it would make a good stew 5/5*
