In the 1950s, people had to hide their homosexuality because they could get fired from a job. They had gay bars but these places were raided by the police, and people were arrested. Being gay was illegal in lots of states and there were no laws to protect them. They were considered mentally disturbed, they had to hide their sexuality, get married and pretended to be straight just to be accepted in the community. Back then it was shameful to be gay, and people spent most of their lives hiding it.
The problem with homosexuality is that it can be very difficult. Opening yourself to another person of the same sex there is the fear of physical and emotional harm. That being said, some people do get lucky and find a good partner. Others need the gay porn industry to feel more balanced. For those people it is worth continuing the gay movement.
His chastising reminds me of how Catholic schoolteachers reprimand their children on "the hellish dangers of questioning God or rules"... Really... This type of message wages havoc on kids and leaves them feeling stifled and confused and confined by society. So you can't be curious? So you aren't allowed to be happy being who you are if you're gay?... This type of staid, ironclad reasoning when used against homosexuality, or against any other thing in the human mind, disunites our country.
This was obviously before Title IX. ("Maybe some girls who will turn lesbian...we don't know.") Um, excuse me, but just WHO is going to teach all those kids P.E.?!

In many states NOW you can be fired or evicted--with no recourse--if you are perceived as gay.
Yeah, I'm aware of the sodomy laws, but that was more indirect and if they were enforced, 3/4 of the adult population would have been in jail. In theory one could be gay without breaking those laws - being gay alone wouldn't get you arrested.
