  • Can somebody tell me what the fuck is this. No seriously, what the fuck is this?

  • @Thomaxius It is rock and roll music from the early 1970's in England. What music do you listen to? We are waiting in anticipation. Please.

  • @shanatp

Same damn genre. I'm more wondering what the hell he's talking about cosmic lawnmover in the beginning, and what's with that stupid hat

  • Sorry, long time i don't listen to them, is this More Fool Me?

  • tries to isolate your mind and to give attention to his music and the feelings this sound give you..the singer is still alive and health, nor even old...but it seems to me he was singing 1000 years ago..

What happened to the music?..it's following a world really ugly?But..when the world was nice...in the Neanderthal time,perhaps...i don't think the world was better in the past...perhaps the magic made the things more interesting.. maybe we need another stone-age?

  • i have been restless since i have seen this. i have listened to Genesis since high school and have seen them live but this performance is different from all the others. i saw it three days ago and cant get it out of my head. just like the first time i had a crush on a girl. oh well maybe i an gay... lol

  • Steve and Mike are so patient in the beginning of the song

  • Since I heard this song at first time, in 1973, I considered it a spacetrip without a spacecraft, that time I didnt understand the lyrics, because I didnt speak english, but this condition didnt make any difference for my sensations. Almost 40 years passed, now I speak and understand english, but I continue to feel the same sensation, mistery and magic sounds in a good vibration song with nonsense lyrics. Whatever! I like this song.

  • Did you know that of all early Genesis' early songs, this is one song that Peter Gabriel grew to dislike and ultimately became bored of singing - he thought it too repetitive and simple.

  • i can say only one thing : its sucks that there is no official dvd with peter gabriel and genesis live ;/

  • Poor Phil Collins - he claimed later that he had no idea what these songs were about - public schoolboy nonsense, he thought. The fact is, that he took part, drummed brilliantly and helped Genesis become the greatest of all time. I hate it when artists look back and denigrate their past endeavours that got them where they are today. John Cleese does the same with Monty Python, feigning that it was all silly nonsense. In fact it was very clever nonsense - that's why we loved it and still do!

  • 218,760 views & counting. It's good to see that possible a lot of younger people are seeing this unique music & enjoying.

Check out :- "The Musical Box"..&.. "Suppers ready".

  • @Kristopful you bet. i'm fifteen and listening to genesis for five months. i play drums, phil's my new favorite. he didn't just play, he composed rhythms.

  • I praticaly ignored this song (as it was released as a single) but it's an incredible fun song...stupid of me looking back. They had a hit with this & then became a mega-band, which was good. But when the money started flowing the band lost some of it's early innovation & edge. It's a pity, but it seems to happen to most bands who start to become successful in a big way.

  • mitici genesis...stupendi...questa canzone fa parte di un album che per me rimane uno dei migliori in assoluto...

  • P at 1:26 is sick

  • LA LA LA LA LA~! XD

  • Thank you very much for sharing.

  • Genesis should have been called Geniuses! :-)

  • During this video, an advertisement poped up that read "Peter Gabriel, new album, out now!". Also, the advertisement next to the video was for the new Pink Floyd box set. PROG IS NOT DEAD!

  • Take this out of the 70s and you miss the point. Music and performance was original and far more fun and interesting than now.

Thanks for the vid - brought back great memories for me anyway.

  • Did'nt get Peters antics and a bit too camp for me way back in the 70's well then, later they got super duper but loved the music great local band

  • Brilliant

  • Peter Gabriel and his role playing of various yard tools, he "wants to be your Lawnmower" call him, he'll be anything you need.

  • @fucheduck Oh my God, I've never read anything funnier (and more true) in my life.

No, that was an overstatement, but you get the point. Peter Gabriel ftw.

  • i'm 14 y.o. i'm french, and i'm the biggest (and the only) fan of 14 yo

  • i was hetero before this video... ((-:

  • @heebeeful If you watch too much old Genesis you'll wind up furry, too... (re: the infamous fox head)

Surreal Peter Gabriel is the best Peter Gabriel.

  • Great shot. Like it a LOT!!!!

  • Awesome!!!!!!

  • genius...

  • GettingEmOutByFriday, it's "It's napping off time for the cosmic lawnmower." This is a reference to the LP cover, but you knew that :)

  • @aadamjacobs .. I think Peter says "It's knocking off time for the Cosmic Lawnmower" .. sounds like "Snackin aff time", cos he's says it in a West Country accent!

  • @aadamjacobs That's IT! Wow. Can't believe I didn't think about that. Thanks!

  • What an incredible performance!!! EPIC!!!

  • Awesome music with a hint of Python, Brilliant!

  • three great cheers for a great upload. Thanks!!!

  • 16 yrs old and going nowhere. Music taste edited by the TV of the day. I left my mates in the city one night and went home early, the bus home was packed with students after a binge and i had to stand up (I fought gravity as long as i could) It was a relief to get off for a piss, (I actually christened the Church that christened me!!) I walked past an open front door and stopped to hear what music was on. It was this song. I was invited in after being recognised, and my new life began.

  • @underkyper I know exactly what you mean...

  • Wonderful!! Can the rest of the concert be available too?

  • There'll never be another Genesis. They were truly legendary, and my 70's upbringing could never have been as rich without them.

  • @lycialive I was a child of the 90's and my life wouldn't be complete or as rich without Genesis. Seriously, as a musician, Peter Gabriel is my greatest inspiration. He is an artist, and that's what we need more of, and less of this commercial shit we have now. We need more bands like Rush, Genesis, Zep, Sabbath, Coheed and Cambria, more bands that have their own sound, and less radio rock.

  • @Nercrophage Amen!

  • Great post

  • Its like the Crow meets cleopatra.

  • I'm old but i 'am hapy with this songs, so old ,so hapy!

  • I'm old by i am hapy with this songs, so old ,so hapy!

  • Awesome Bass Line by Mr Ruthreford

  • This's fantastic! What's this song called??

  • @trubblemuffin "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", track 2 from Selling England by the Pound, 1973.

  • Peter Gabriel is amazing!

  • Anyone seeing the Musical Box in Tacoma?

  • Peter > Phil.

  • I'm 21. I listen to Genesis since baby. Don't call me youth then.

  • it is magic! brilliant!

  • This video is awesome! So strange! Going to see the Musical Box perform the Lamb in October in So. Cal. (go to calprog for info) I can' t wait! They are actually licensed by Peter Gabriel!

  • What does Peter say at 0:25? It sounds like "Sneppenuff time for the cosmic lawnmower..." XD

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday yup looks like it

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday

he says " there's not enough time for the cosmic lawnmower ..."

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday I think it's "It's up and up time..."

  • I thank my mother and father for giving me Led Zeppelin as a child; I think my mother was on the right track when she burned that CD with Solsbury Hill on it.

As I listened to that song on youtube, one Suummer night about three years ago, I discovered... this video.

From that day on, I dance with my hands on my hips, looking either direction, and jumping up and down.

I won't brag, but for a thirteen year old, I'm so happy that my parents granted me real music.

  • @TheOneEyedHound right on man

  • @TheOneEyedHound Oh, how I wish there were more people like you. I'm 14, I probably have the same passion for Genesis and good old bands like Rush, Zeppelin, and Yes that you do...I wish there were more young kids like us that appreciate this music and not the shit that we're 'supposed' to like. >.>

  • Peter Gabriel......... :-D

  • this is so good it is scary.

  • Aww that was SUPERB

  • oh... marry me, young peter gabriel ( ^-^)/

  • 70s was the best time on music , today only very poor clones with no soul , the record companies is who killed the good music , progressive , hard rock and the classic heavy metal .

  • @echoesroll You hit the nail on the head bro. Nobody takes the time to learn their instrument or write a song with any thing interesting in it. It's not an art form any more, or a way to get people thinking. It's all about how many unit's can we sell, or how many download's. Fuck man, I learned everything I need to know from 70's music. Don't trust government, question everything, be true to yourself, party lot's, and don't take shit from nobody. And listen to Genesis..... of course, and Rush.

  • If any band should still be together and never have separated it would be"GENESIS" Much love from Canada and thank you a million time again.

  • @ianabroad You made my day by posting this.I have been a fan of Genesis ever since I first put on my brother's 45" record of "Selling England by the pound" I love Genesis whit all the original members were together. And I never thought that I would see such a wonderful performance from a band that always made me wish I would have been born a few years earlier so I could of been able to witness the magic live. You made a grown man cry! lol!

  • this is just flippin fab

  • I want to be there.

  • What is the name of this brilliant song?

  • @oxygen25man "In Your Wardrobe"

  • Sweet, no youtube fighting! So aside from Genesis.. who are you into? Thanks for liking my PG joke.. I got a million of 'em! Where are you from, btw?

  • Bien peter gabriel, les extrñamos muchachos de genesis

  • o genesis de peter gabriel e um marco na historia do rock progressivo.valor inestimavel.

  • I think I have a huge crush on the weirdo with the lawnmower...weird haircut and all.

  • @gio73vanna .. yeah, he was REALLY pretty.

  • and now we'd like to take you a little further westward, agriculturally speaking, to where the sweet smell of freshly mowed grass pervades our hairy nostrils. it's [??] time for the cosmic lawnmower.

  • @Karmalize knocking off time!

  • Does anyone know what he is saying in his introduction of this song?

  • Well, we all know who the mad performance-art-prog-rock genius was behind Genesis. Aside from the fucked up haircut, Gabriel was pretty.

  • @cameronobscura22 Yes, we do know. Tony Banks is the art-prog-rock genius behind Genesis. Tony Smith, Steve, Phil, and Mike have stated that Tony is the true creative soul of Genesis. Tony Smith even stated in the 2007 documentary "Come Rain or Shine" that "When it comes to Tony Banks, Genesis was his solo career." Firth of Fifth, Apocalypse in 9/8, Watcher of the Skies, the finale of The Musical Box, the second section of Cinema Show, and After the Ordeal were mainly penned by Banks.

  • @SynthOrgan.. be that as it may, listening to Gabriel's solo albums vs. 'post PG Genesis'.. there's no comparison. Tony Banks was also in the crappy Genesis. I dunno.. maybe it was the '80's. Strangely enough, that point is illustrated in American Psycho.. he's a greedy 80's douchebag who doesn't understand the 70's Genesis, but goes into this monologue about how great the 'new' Genesis is.. especially Tony Banks. So, uh.. maybe it's on Youtube.

  • @cameronobscura22 Peter Gabriel is my favorite solo artist, and I love his first album, but remember, it had some straight rock tracks such as Modern Love, and Slowburn, as well as that awful (yet clever) Excuse Me. At the same time Genesis was performing post PG songs such as Dance on a Volcano, Ripples, Mad Man Moon, Los Endos, and Entangled. These four tracks were more prog and complex than anything on PG1. PG2 was punk with DIY and On The Air. "So" was as poppy as I.T. with Big Time and SH.

  • @SynthOrgan.. Wow.. you know your Genesis, my friend. As taste is subjective, I'm not going to get into a pissing match over old Genesis vs. New(er) Genesis. I will tip my hat (showing off my new Peter Gabriel fucked up haircut) and tell you to keep reaching for the stars.

  • @cameronobscura22 Genesis is what made me decide to become a musician. I'm a hardcore (but not obsessive) Genesis fan. Don't worry, I have no intention of starting a pissing match. I love all their albums equally. You reach for the stars too. Cheers!

p.s. Priceless PG hair joke there:)

  • when i was a kid growing up in the early 80s. i only knew of the phil collins/ Genesis era. and once i saw a behind the music on genesis, and i found out that peter gabriel was the origonal singer. and that they were more gothic and punk then the catchy pop songs of 80s.. it totaly blew my mind. cause ive had a listen to both eras and they both stand out on there own.

  • I know what I like ... thats Genesis with Gabriel... Awesome...

  • nice haircut Pete :/

  • Ok...I like the music, but after seeing this. 0_o

  • I thnk what he did to his hair is so cool! But i seem to never hear anyone talk about it. Like in their interviews or anything i dont know anything about it! Can anyone give me some information about his haircut and why he did and all that good stuff :)

  • @rocker70sman the hair was just to be excedingly strange as far as i know. but the costumes were supposed to represent meanings of certain songs. For instance their 22 minute epic, supper's ready contains many stories, he changeg outfits like 3 or 4 times in that song sometimes i believe.

  • 5 people have a flymo & furniture from ikea ........

  • I am absolutely bewildered by the way that Gabriel has sung such a undefinable message to me: "keep you mowing-blades sharp". Is it do what you like in life? This airy-englishness that commes out is undescribable, and somehow the music itself is not that complicated and over decorated. maybe the sitar/guitar which Hackett plays ( which is the same that Howe plays in Close to the edge, funnily enough ), which has that repeating pattern... just a feast for my imagination.

  • @chotchcas guess u never saw bowie, or iggy pop, or bauhaus or a million other artists who helped keep the heartbeat of rock and real music composition and performing alive.

  • Wow! Priceless clip!

  • The rest of the band look like they're thinking 'can't wait till he leaves and we can become boring bland multimillionaires making music for yuppies'.

  • what's the name of this song?

  • @ZaidDG

I know what I like (in your wardrobe).

  • @ZaidDG "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) - there's a few more postings of it if you look around

  • Such a shame the dick Phil Collins ruined Genesis.

  • @yes4545

    Totally agree with you.

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set, Genesis, The Lamb Live at the Shrine 1975 3-disc 2CD/DVD set, Genesis Live in Montreal 1974 2CD set, Genesis Live in Zurich 1977 2CD set available at Tommygun Video - please see our youtube channel for link, video/audio clips, more details

  • These guys were fantastic, when Peter was around.

I had the opportunity to watch them perform in Lisbon, it was Peter's last concert before the accident!! It was the best concert ever!!!

Thank you Ian for sharing this video!

  • More singers need to do the "Cosmic Lawnmower!"

  • Buckethead?

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Yeah, I was thinking "Buckethead" myself, although in other vids, it's definitely "P.J. Harvey". lol. And I'm crushing on PG pretty heavily at the moment, so no hate going out here, it's just funny!

  • I see a lot of comments about wishing you could go back and see them way back when... I recently read about a tribute band called The Musical Box and apparently the members of Genesis gave this band the okay to use their old stage equipment, gave them access to original recording tracks and connected them with the old stage crew so that they could REALLY nail it like it was done back in the day. I also heard Gabriel took his family to see them so that his kids could "see what daddy used to do".

  • @jahambodotcom The Musical Box,band from Montreal ,Quebec,Canada, tours doing replica concerts of genesis, they are amazing,Phil said that they sounded better than Genesis,, a great complinent indeed, catch them if you can,,you will not be sorry

  • @jahambodotcom

I saw The Musical Box do the White Show recently. Excellent adaptation and they are using the bands old videos and Peter's on stage costumes.

  • @jahambodotcom

Saw The Musical Box about 9 years ago.... they were an amazing recreation of. and the crowd was right there with them , singing along and following the dynamics of the music. and they covered stuff from Tresspass

  • @jahambodotcom What a load of crude and pure shit!

We need no false rolex ,we caterpillar it!

Genesis the genuine had it all.

Not an inch is to be taken out nor added!

    Never! DAMM! LEARN TO RESPECT!

  • @kjallesoft what?

  • @jahambodotcom It's a band from Montreal and they do exactly the same shows than Genesis in 1970-71-72-73-74. The singer is costumed like Gabriel. It's a very good tribute band ;)

  • @vivemoi301 YES best show iv ever seen . The Musical Box live at Montreal Bell Centre.

  • @jahambodotcom I saw The Musical Box perform the whole live set of "THe Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", andit was a breath-taking experience.

  • @jahambodotcom I had the almost unbelievable pleasure of seeing The Musical Box perform "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" a few years ago. Of course, it was second-best, but I almost didn't survive, I enjoyed their tribute so much. I never got to see this band...never loved Genesis as much after Gabriel left.

  • Lot of great comments from people who have seen The Musical Box, live. All great reviews of their performances. Thanks! I want to see it even more now. It's unfortunate that I live in San Diego for one reason: great shows rarely come to town because we're so close to LA. If only the touring acts understood what a horrible experience it is to drive to LA and back from San Diego (despite our proximity), maybe they'd take pity and come to town.

  • @jahambodotcom Holy hell! Thanks for the information, mate!

  • @jahambodotcom did they give them the lawnmower too?

  • @jahambodotcom I saw them live and they were quite impressive.

  • A golden age for music. Genesis and Gabriel taking music to places it hadn't been before, or since.

  • Just brilliant!!! omg, I wish I could've seen them back then!!

  • Unbelievable stuff.....1973 I was born...same to me...give me a time machine

  • Based on what he became in his solo career, it's amazing to see that in his Genesis days Peter was a long, flowing haired rock God showman. People don't think of him as a frontman on the level of Plant or Daltrey or Jagger but he sure was. Maybe didn't sing raw rock n' roll like them but vocally and with entertainment factor was right up there with them.

  • I find this interesting, but no way near as good as Genesis with Phil.

  • @wateronglass No offence, but that statement is ridiculous!Which Phil Collins album matched any of their 1st 7 albums?!

  • @rematpac I'll always put peter above phil, but i think Wind and Wuthering as well as A Trick of the Tail are up there with their previous albums.

  • @hypnotize2472 I really need to check those 2 albums out.I've heard they were supossedly good and the cover artwork looks like prog music.Unless some of the songs made it on the radio,I don't think I've ever heard those albums. But I have heard Phil Collins music and what I've heard is a far cry from Genesis's early albums, some of the best rock music ever recorded. You've convinced me I need to check them out though.I should look for something on utube first before buying them.

  • @hypnotize2472 I absolutely agree with you. Songs like 'Ripples' and "Afterglow' were just incredible tunes. But after that, fuhgetabouit !!!!

  • @rematpac Duke is a fantastic album, and We Can't Dance, although recent, has some awesome stuff on it. Driving the Last Spike is hard to get tired of. Phil was the perfect replacement when gabriel had to sadly go.

  • @ToxicTurquoise454 Thanx for the info,I'll have to check out some of the music on those albums to make sure i'm not missing anything good that I didn't know about.

  • @wateronglass phil on then there were three and a couple others came close but then they remade themselves. this wasn't his fault - all bands to keep up must change. look at the stones. aerosmith, etc

  • Peter Gabriel = Pure Genius

  • @markm0918 AGREED

  • excellent...great times

  • I was 14 years young. Thanks for those music. That influence my whole life, positively.

  • Is this concert available on DVD, anyone know?

  • Live at Covent Garden

  • The problem of the society nowdays is that the youth listen to kate perry and not to this. Cruel world.

  • @drjekyll66 I completely agree

  • @drjekyll66 I don't, the majority of young people maybe, but not all of us. I listen to this kind of stuff, along with new bands too. There's still good out there, it's just harder to find.

  • @jgeisler92

Wich stuff ? I would like to listen to. Surprise me, young man.

  • @drjekyll66 Try Beardfish, North Atlantic Oscillation and Pineapple Thief. Good quality new ol' Prog.(not talking 'bout Prog metal) Especially the first one.

  • @drjekyll66 hey man have a little faith in us, im 16...and guess what?.....im listening to genesis....and geuss what els...its one o'clock and time for genesis, and when the sun beats down and i lie on the bench, i can always hear them play. yep who els agrees that selling england by the pound is the best album?

  • @drjekyll66 fuck this generation

  • @drjekyll66 "The youth"? As in ALL of them? Are you serious? Please don't stereotype.

  • @lifesglorydead

Of course you are right. Luckyly there are. It was just a provocation to decades of superficialness.

    Greetings

  • This is about the only time I am thankful for law breakers.

  • makes me laugh that the various members of genesis all think they have improved as artists since this era...

  • Посто классика арт-рока !!!! Жесть.

  • @Vit1969 Fuck yeah!

  • @Topographic0ceans Why are you fucking yourself ? ))

  • That's great. It's a masterpiece. Epic!!!

    Thanks a lot

  • THAT's Peter Gabriel?! Whoa.

  • @KidFidrych Fantastic, isn't it? Record producers in the early 70's were not too hip to what was "cool" with the kids (thank God) - As a result, great acts like Genesis were allowed full artistic license. Now days artists are afforded the license and easier production, but still - as back then, distribution was a major issue. It takes an investment of time to really enjoy & get to know this music. Everyone's in such a hurry these days.
