The recording process exagerated her vibrato maybe, but Lotte Lehmann was always the most moving of singers. Hugues Cuenod once commented to us in a masterclass how very well she covered the fact that she had a short breath span- she always made the many top up breaths she took an integral part of the expression and phrasing. She was a phenomenal singing actress.
Christa L is amazing on this too... Lehmann was the Gold Standard...she was present at Salzburg when CL sang it (the first time) and gave CL a little soldier (figurine like Leonore) that she had actually made for her.....honestly as I listen to it...similar in many ways....I love the slender placement of voice of BOTH these ladies..I'm always partial to CL! They both show that it doesn't have to be a ridiculously big voice for this role which is many times how it's cast now!
Magnificent! What a treasure you have in these recordings. Wow....what control, what a voice. And, I'll bet she could fill a hall without a microphone.
Such is the beauty and power of classic training!
I just love this! I love it when she stoops to the lowest note, just fantastic - what a range. This is the first rendition of this aria I ever heard and so it's really hard to displace it from my head as being my favourite. I just love the humanity and passion. Thanks for the post!
Lotte and Eliz: Schumann apart from der Rosenkaviler were the two most
wonderful leider singers in the 30's, and today they are unsurpassed, in opera there's only one Rosenkaviler, let youngsters dream on listen to the 1933
. Many of Maria fans on YT applaud her when it takes her 20 seconds to prepare a trill. For them it is not poor technique but Maria's genius knowing that the composer wrote the trill in the wrong place.
Lehmann is magnificent, she oozes excitement and tension.
Just wonderful singing, brought tears to my eyes, thanks so much.

Perfect, moving singing. One of my desert island discs. If only she had recorded the recitative as well...

Glorious tone and dramatic intensity in Lehmann's singing, whatever the technical flaws. Leider, Flagstad, and Nilsson are great too in this aria.

So beautiful, so full of musical life; who like her can live through a piece of music?
