What is with the phony static added @0:11 (before the needle meets the record)?
This reinforces the belief that all vinyl is noisy. Sure, a lot of it is noisy straight from the manufacturer, and made worse when you put your greasy fingers on the groves, and never properly clean your records. But is not true for a lot of records that were properly pressed and play quietly.
Clearly, the wealthy folks at CBS are clueless about hi-end turntables/tone-arms/cartridges, etc, and perpetuate this BS.
LOL funnily enough I thought the same at 0:11, the truth is if you have a good direct drive high end turntable with a good stylus and cartridge then background noise won't be an issue, I found this when using a cheapo ceramic cartridge turntable then going to a top end 1970's pioneer turntable with a Stanton setup the difference in background noise was quite different.
But doesn't vinyl degrade with each use? That alone would keep me from using them. And yes, I find CDs harsh and clinical sounding. And CDs are incredibly easy to damage.
@transdrole It's a myth. With a high quality, properly aligned and maintained stylus and clean records, you'd have to play a record thousands of times to hear an audible difference. The heavy noise people hear on vinyl is all caused by damaged records that have been run on systems with poorly aligned needles at high tracking forces. Records must also be cleaned before each play and handled correctly. All this sounds like a lot but in practice it is a cinch. Microfiber cloth and a brush
@transdrole Thank you, and don't ever be afraid of vinyl; for most albums (though not all), it is the closest you will ever get to hearing the sound of the master tape. Just prepare yourself ahead of time for the ensuing addictin once you start picking up mint albums by the cartload for .99 each on eBay and elsewhere.
You'd even be surprised how good (in terms of tonality) those old scratched up "degraded" records sound once you've gotten them cleane (with a little dish soap and warm water)
CD's used to be great sounding but since 1995 the Loudness War has ruined them. Vinyl cannot be as loud as a CD which is why they tend to sound better than their respective compressed CD.
By the way, vinyl hasn't had a revival; it never disappeared.
Most vinyl sucks. New pressings of old stuff are especially bad. Take Deep Purple's Machine Head. The new pressings are quiet -- and dull, lifeless, put you to sleep sounding.
.
No two records sound the same. You might have to go through dozens of the same album to find one that sounds great. Sometimes, only records pressed in a specific region of the world have a chance of sounding great. But it is worth the search (if you have the time and resources).
I'm about to dive into the LP scene, I have AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Back in Black along with some Journey albums that will be the crucible that I launch this new crusade from. I'm waiting for my paycheck just to be safe but honestly I can't wait. The feeling of LP's, everything about them makes me feel warm, and finding both old bands, and new ones on LP is amazing. Can't Wait.
@TheKingOfC4 vinyl has the best sound. I've been living in the cassette, CD, and mp3 ages. when I got vinyl, I was amazed. so fuck you, and learn proper english
ive never had a cd or dvd last me any longer then 5 years, you die with your vinyl collection and they still play, its worth the extra money to invest in vinyl cause it last longer.
@DEPARTMENTofPEACEusa actually, back in the 80's CD's were AWESOME. But, in the 90's record companies started to exploit digital technology by pushing the format as loud as it possibly could by dynamic compression and limiting, and by the 21st century most new CD's sounded AWFUL. Alot of great albums that could have sounded great on CD were ruined. New Vinyl albums only sound better because the format just cannot be as loud as the CD or MP3 equivalent.
@DEPARTMENTofPEACEusa True, because vinyl is more expensive in every way than CD's and especially digital releases. Bandwidth for iTunes costs a fraction of a vinyl release. Packaging, shipping, photography, all of it adds up quick. CDs were meant to be disposable and the lossy compression used clips audio. It's so bad that producers have to employ engineering tricks to avoid the "digital wall" that CD audio creates.
my take on the whole Vinyl situation is that artists are not making money selling their music anymore, so vinyl is the best way to make sure some type of sales generate- and it costs more too... I appreciated the Record era, but don't think I'd go back in time. I like my Ipod too much man..
Let's say an artist that I really like releases a CD. Well, I cannot listen to it, because it's brickwalled (loudness war victim). This might not be important for listeners with average speaker system, but those that have pretty decent headphone setup feel fatigue when listening to those CDs, including me. So now I'm in summer job (I'm almost 17) and will spend all the money on a turntable, probably the SL-1200/1210 and a decent cartridge like the AT150MLX. And a preamp, of course.....
On holidays I acess dad's LP collection in grandma's house.
But on home, I'm hybrid. How? Listening to vinyl rips. Some of them are great, but that's because they're audiophile pressings. Infact got MFSL DSOTH and Hotel california and it sounds very digital!
When it comes to well done audio (good mastering with no brickwalling or DRC) both mediums are great.
Sadly nowadays some LPs are mastered from digital loud compressed masters, used for the very same album on CD. And that's bad!
Some labels do make two masters, the loud for CD and a good one for vinyl. Only left would be release this one on a digital format. As a consumer, it's nice to have a chance.
Others just use the same loud master and put it on vinyl, and that sucks! You just get the same loud music in a nicer package.
For example, Tom petty released mojo in CD and Blu-Ray HiRes audio. This last version is not compressed, and sounds great.
@killerklown91 Depends on what you're buying, the only records from any time period I have that I got for under $10 was some singles vinyls. The lowest I ever got a full album of a vinyl was Ocean Eyes by Owl City for $10 and a few around that price range but a little more expensive that happened to be some old dub music releases from the 70's. Maybe because my collection mainly consists of electronic genres of music in general and they tend to be more expensive and hard to get.
@squezey1 That's what I mean though. Big bands charge that much for vinyl.
I was talking about manufacturing them. And yeah your right though, it does depend on where you get them. Some bands release super limited quantities of them and charge more then the basic unit price. I usually buy LPs for 5 bucks, EPs for around 2-4.
heres the thing Vinyl never died and it never will. while i do love digital it doesn't sound nearly as good as analog vinyl. listening to vinyl makes you experience music, makes you feel it. spinning a record is just relaxing and fun. Long Live Vinyl.
@C815richard Vinyl really brings music to life because it is almost completely organic, the music just travels from some cut out track in a surface and into a speaker. That's what I love about it.
They make for great gifts too. I bought Adele - 21 for my girlfriend out of random when it came out this year and it made for a far more memorable gift than the CD would have.
I'm still seeing even with the top artists that not all of them are willing to make the plunge each and every time. I noticed the first Ke$ha album came out on vinyl, but the latest one did not. Is it a risky financial decision for the artist/label to release current albums on vinyl? Perhaps it depends on fan base? But I also noticed Taylor Swift releases her albums on vinyl, and you wouldn't think there would be a heavy vinyl fanbase for her...
@TRJ22487ISDEAD How about listening to some real music instead of some pop culture garbage? Anything but that stuff, come on there is so much more out there than the "top artists". It is obviously risky for some pop artist to release their stuff on vinyl because most of their fanbase probably doesn't even know what one is.
@squezey1 I build my album collection full of records with other people in mind. I try to have at least one record that specific people I can think of will enjoy when they come over. But you do realize music is AN OPINION, a PREFERENCE right? That would be like me saying "Ohh, this chicken is delicious" and you rip it off my plate and say "Steak is the correct meal to eat".
Anyway, the latest albums I have gotten are Neon Trees Habits, and Owl City Ocean Eyes. Loved them both.
@TRJ22487ISDEAD lmao, and I just wrote that without realizing that you had just bought Ocean Eyes as well! Look....just don't be so judgmental towards people. Not all of the top artists are bad. People need to ease up and accept the new artists with the old. I bought my girlfriend Adele - 21 a month or so ago, and I'm lucky to listen to my own record without her begging to put Adele on! You should see how genuinely happy she gets...
@squezey1 But if you would like to know my collection is truly dominated with Beatles and Police albums. A combined 16, 12 Beatles with my most valuable being the mono version of Magical Mystery Tour.
@squezey1 and yeah you are obviously oh so right about the fanbases of many artists having no idea what a record player even is, thus making it a leap of faith to produce an LP. But it sure is fun to make people realize, "Holy crap, they still make those!"...you can see it just sparks an interest in everyone's eyes when they see new material on what they thought was a dead format. People have a misconception of records being old, obsolete, and dirty, but they are wonderful!
It's funny though, I'll buy things on record that I NEVER would have bought otherwise. I have the latest album from Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, and never would have bought those, but something about a record changes everything. There is charm in a double LP that a CD can never have. Plus I've noticed many pop vinyls of the last 15 years have become EXTREMELY rare and valuable....look up the Spice Girls Spice World for instance....there may be money in some of these soon enough...
Good to see I'm not the only one with this huge problem...I'm 24 and spend all of my extra money on records week after week! I only bought my player 60 days ago and I'm already up to over 40 albums, many of them brand new at $20-30 each, plus my Dad is going to be giving me all of his 45's from the 60's....wish I never grew up on CD's and MP3's, though I haven't bought one of either in nearly a decade!
@famisht i have the exact same story you can go about this by two ways one get one at a garage sale two write a presuassive essay the essay is your best bet
i'm a newbie with this hobby. and i gotta say i'm loving it, i already bought 6 records and a turntable. it's really cool, and it does sound warm and filling.
@stewie100 Get ready for it consume your life and spare money like a black hole. lol I have 41 and have currently 4 on the way. Will order 1 more this week from Amazon, that's where I get most of mine from, though I have found some pretty great music I was looking for digging around in a local record shop. Last week I bought one for $15 that turned out to be one of the first 500 copies of a release ever produced. ( Perma-Frost by Thomas Koner if you must know. dark ambient artist)
@Caimingchang no way . i got led zeppelin I, IV, Jimi hendrix smash hits and essential hits, doors, Dark side of the moon etc. VINYL IS WHERE ITS AT FOLKS
Okay, around the :20 mark, that guy had an Evil Empire Demo vinyl by Rage Against The Machine. That is literally one of the rarest albums on earth. I am speechless as to where and how he got that. The only person that has any knowing of that album are Salva Veritate, the band's photographer, and the small amount of people that have heard the tracks on youtube.
I still play my vinyls that I bought new 25 years ago and have no plans to replace them with digital. I've started looking for specific artists on vinyl, but it's not easy in a small town.
Keep a look out for Japanese pressings as the quality in the original manufacturing is superior to those made in North American plants.
y is it tht the only ppl who comment are totally in favor of vinyl. dont get me wrong i like vinyl too, but its not as black nd wite as ppl r makin it seem. both have advantages nd disadvantages, but 4 sum reason ppl think tht it is right to compare a turntable with amazing speakers to an ipod with crappy headphones. if u listen 2 an lp, ep or watever piece of vinyl u want 2 listen 2 thru ipod headphones nd an ipod thru amazing speakers, ur opinions wud b the exact opposite of wat they are
@MrP00sy The frequency response of an ipod is inferior to even a low end turntable. My $30 cartridge gets a frequency response of 25-27,000 hz. An ipod gets around 20-20,000 hz at best. It probably gets up to 16,000 hz with compressed audio.
Even on the best speakers, the ipod cant get the higher frequencies.
Ipods are portable, turntables are for serious audiophile listening. The two are nowhere near the same, and are practically incomparable. Like you said, they have their +'s and -'s.
@0UT3RL1M1T5 but most people cant really hear much above 20,000 hz, but its comforting to know u can go tht extra length just in case. also, you probably wud only rly kno about this if ur a dj but wats ur opinion on DVS (digital vinyl system), things like serato scratch live nd traktor scratch?
@MrP00sy I don't know much about that stuff, but I googled digital vinyl system, and it seems pretty cool. Is it software? If so, then I think it is practical and what not, but in my opinion, a real dj has to do at least some real vinyl stuff. Digital loops and stuff are nice and it really doesn't require skill, I'm sure, but the real "dj work" (scratching, and basically anything else) is what makes it awesome. And I think those other things are scratch records, they are pretty neat as well.
Well, as a 14-year-old, I can explain why all of those stupid people like their ipods. 1. It is convenient. 2. Oh god, it's new! I have to get one or I will be lame! 3. I can play stupid games on it! As a person that has a brain and listens to vinyl, I can explain why these people are wrong about their iPods. 1. They probably haven't even HEARD vinyl, how can they judge? 2. Frequency response 3. Realism 4. Warm sound 5. Vinyl is meant to play back sound! That's what it was invented for! ANALOG!
@0UT3RL1M1T5 i give my hat to you sir. i couldnt agree more. im into valve hifi i have 3 valve amps and vinyl and i can honestly say no transistor amp and cd player comes close. vinyl will make a comeback...
@0UT3RL1M1T5 interesting start 4 a debate. your 4th point i totally agree with nd have nothing against, but ur last 4 points im not so sure about. ya the crappy headphones tht come with an ipod have about the lamest, nd crappiest sound quality ever, bad frequency response, but if u havnt noticed, most ppl either connect their ipods 2 decent speakers, or get better headphones. as for realism, i dont see how music playin on an ipod is any less 'real' than on vinyl. warm sound, depend on speakers
I'm 16 and I love playing classics from the 80s on my vintage TT. Fidelity, soundstage, and dynamic range of analog audio from an LP beats anything digital.
And it bugs the crap out of me how people "enjoy" their Ipods and ear buds. I don't see how you can really get into music using one of those things.
U know what I think is cool, is that you COLLECT vinyl, whereas for digital, you don't collect, I think that that looking fo vinyl should be a sport!!! ITS SOOOO FUNN!!!!!
I'm 26 years old and I started my vinyl collection when I was 4 years old when my old man gave me his HMV record player back in 1988 and gave me my first ever LP which was Van McCoy Rhythms Of The World. He was on the verge of starting his CD collection and was chucking out his scratched records, to this day I still love vinyl but I don't agree that they sound the best, any vinyl expert would tell you that but there's just something exciting about putting the needle on the record.
wow looking at all the young people buying Records is Awesome. im 35yrs old and I got my first record player when I was 2yrs old for xmas it was a Toys R US 45 rpm close n play...only played 45s and the first record I got was Donna Summer I Feel Love...yes it was the disco era...I never wanted toys..so everyone knew to give me records...so glad I still have my Lps and 45s..Plus many that were giving to me by my family over the years. Tons of 78rpm and 33s from the 50s to now. Keep Vinyl alive
l've never like CDs for the fact is that it doesn't have the sound quality that vinyl have. i only like CDs for recording my vinyls into it and for potability that's all.
@venusprojection That is awesome man! Best of luck buidling up your collection. You will have a blast! I hope you are checking out some of the vinyl collection videos here on youtube. There really is a great community for it here.
I'm 18 and i started buying records during the vinyl revival of '08 and i've been spinning wax ever since! i thought i was the only vinyl collector my age
Having an older, say rare vinyl record in mint condition. Placing it on a higher quality audiophile turntable with a nice cartridge and carefully dropping the stylus down to have a listen is one of the most satisfying experiences there are in the personal entertainment/ audio world.
We have just made our own auction vinyl record website, if you like vinyl please check us out. You can also use our very own bulklister to easily transfer csv files and even import from turbolister, even have a buy it now for 60 days option at no extra cost, cheapest rates on the net, just go to blog and click on the link.
@Copper20 NO VHS SUCKS we want vinyl back because it has quality the sound in many ways is better that cd because the lows and high remain in the master record hovewer vhs is shit! blu-ray and hd-dvd provide the best quality (that is for regular consumers) although film is still the best quality media for movies
:34 So much juicy, collectible vinyl on the wall, my mouth was watering: 1) the lp on the bottom left with the large heart is immortal New Orleans sensation Miss Barbara George-"I Know (That You Don't Want Me No More)"-AFO/Sue Records; 2) at the guy's shoulder is the legendary Gene Chandler-"Duke of Earl"-Vee-Jay Records; and 3) right above the Chandler lp is Smokey Robinson & The Miracles-"Recorded Live Onstage"-Tamla/Motown Records. Very cool store!
Firstly cbs are wrong vinyl never died it was never stopped being made there was always a market even if small im 22 been buying vinyl since 2005 since i was 17 i also found a 1993 copy of nirvana in utero for 20 dollars. Record shops never stopped selling vinyl only chains like walmart and target did.
lol im 14 and i have an entire pile of old and awesome audio equiptment ........... i say hell yeah vinyl is awesome :DD ive been into that stuff since i was about 6 and I dont care what people say about vintage audio but I say its way better than digital! KEEP VINYL ALIVE!!! in fact, keep analog alive! its amazing
Vinyl is not the reason why there was a surge for CDs. It is that the most older folks had cheap turntables wich that had bad sound and scratched vinyl, so they got their fill of it and said "to hell with it". Im 16 and yesterday I bought SABA PSP240 turntable. My parents love the sound, while month ago they were against it.
I've always wanted to buy a punk record on vinyl to get a more raw sound and have the giant disc all just for fun, but imho it's a novelty. CD is of course superior
If you really want to hear the difference between CD's and vinyl be SURE you are listening to an organic sound...I.E. John Fahey, Elliott Smith, Alice Coltrane....something where you can hear it breathe...a rock record really doesn't do it justice...throw on some Charles Mingus for EF sake...
So not true, even a good pressed rock album sounds better on a turntable. I've put it to the test on my quality set and the vinyl sounds so much deeper and more dynamic (very important in rock music if you ask me) then the CD. It all depends on quality of the turntable as well of course.
I have vinyl records that I bought in the 70's and the "remastered" CD of the same thing. No comparison, the vinyl wins hands down. It's not even close and I have a $750 transport with a $800 tube DAC that's going up against a used refurbed $199 TT with a $200 cart. I know why it is but I'm struggling to put it into laments terms but it has to do with binary conversion. look at a digital tune vs. analog under an oscilloscope and you will see with your eyes what I'm trying to say with my mouth
I'm sorry, but I HAD to laugh, GDBeatz. You're starting a vinly hip hop collection??? Heh heh heh, how many do you think are out there, buddy? I just gave my vinly collection to a friend's son, for their Classic Car museum. It was 2100 LP's and 1900 45's. Everybody owns things for a while, then ownership changes, then more can enjoy them. Thanks for the laugh, GDB!
How many are out there....? Thousands my friend!! I say this because i have only been collecting for about 4 years and I have a few hundred hip/hop pieces on Vinyl. Have to remeber that Hip Hop was very, very big in the early to mid 80's when vinyl and cassettes were the only thing. Not to mention that many, many new artist release vinyl as well. I just got Jay-Z's new lp a couple of weeks ago on vinyl. Not to mention the TON of reissues I have bought!
@larierre Yeah...it is amazing the comeback that vinyl is seeing. ...and you know these companies..if they see a buck can be made they are all on board lol. Best wishes to you Larierre. Ps..are you a big vinyl collector yourself?
@mrhoffame I WAS a collector, but am downsizing, and GAVE my collection to the son of a friend, who has a personal memorabilia and car museum. They get played, and will be well taken care of. I had about 2300 albums and 1900 45's. I didn't start out to collect, I just bought a few at yard sales. THEN, folks would say "Take the whole box, for $5." Heh heh heh, I ended up with some very rare and special records. Good luck to you.
@larierre Passing them on to your son huh? That is great!!! I hope he adds to it and one day passes it to his kids. Music is one thing, but the history and the change of times that is passed down with something like a vinly collection is priceless!! You are a good dad lol! Take Care my friend!!
Good for you my friend. Go for it. I tell you what though...there is a lot of great music out there. I would recommentd you don't limit yourself to just hip/hop. Explore a bit.
I don't care about tapes, but WHOOP VINYLS! YEAYEAHYEAHYEAHYEAH! I own every Radiohead album on vinyl except for Pablo Honey (CD'd that one), and I've ordered Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood to the Head" on vinyl! I LUZ TEH RECORDZ AND STUFFFFFFFF!
(I got a great [Ion] record player at Costco for $80; sure, it's not nostalgic, but it works!)
@ybrik222 WOW!! I'm 15 as well and I get the same reaction from most of my other classmates. It's good to see another person my age keeping vinyl alive! ^^
My youngest son is high school age. We watch Fringe together. The episodes where they play LPs on an old turn table prompted me to go pull my Rega Planar 3 belt drive, glass platter turntable out of storage, where it had been for maybe 20 years. My son was amazed to hear my vinyl LPs. The subtle textures, low and high range dynamics, the stereo separation were all so much more apparent on the LP music vs songs played off the iPod. Rega still makes the Planar 3 line for around $800 ballpark.
@ybrik222 WOW!! I'm 15 to and I get the exact same reaction from my schoolmates. It's great to see another person my age that is keeping vinyl alive! :D
Nice, nice. My sister has most of our old record collection (the good stuff, at least), but I've been buying new albums on vinyl. I hope you listen to some of those records. :P
To some of it never left. Anyone one else out there with the glen danzin misfits on LP? I do. I want adele on LP now

It's so bad that producers have to employ engineering tricks to avoid the "digital wall" that CD audio creates.

The reason why the consumers went for CDs is because sound quality is better and they're more convenient.

my take on the whole Vinyl situation is that artists are not making money selling their music anymore, so vinyl is the best way to make sure some type of sales generate- and it costs more too... I appreciated the Record era, but don't think I'd go back in time. I like my Ipod too much man..
KIRKCHUKALAS 6 months ago
Let's say an artist that I really like releases a CD. Well, I cannot listen to it, because it's brickwalled (loudness war victim). This might not be important for listeners with average speaker system, but those that have pretty decent headphone setup feel fatigue when listening to those CDs, including me. So now I'm in summer job (I'm almost 17) and will spend all the money on a turntable, probably the SL-1200/1210 and a decent cartridge like the AT150MLX. And a preamp, of course.....
hytlerson 7 months ago
On holidays I acess dad's LP collection in grandma's house.
But on home, I'm hybrid. How? Listening to vinyl rips. Some of them are great, but that's because they're audiophile pressings. Infact got MFSL DSOTH and Hotel california and it sounds very digital!
When it comes to well done audio (good mastering with no brickwalling or DRC) both mediums are great.
Sadly nowadays some LPs are mastered from digital loud compressed masters, used for the very same album on CD. And that's bad!
wotajared 7 months ago
@wotajared I sometimes wish that the major (and minor) labels would put out bigger dynamic range versions of their albums in instead of vinyl...
szaby33 7 months ago
@szaby33 Indeed!
This last version is not compressed, and sounds great.

well if vinyls died out, how would we hear those older tracks
lbjoshbal 7 months ago
New vinyls DO NOT cost 20 bucks a piece.
Especially for big bands like them.
It's more like 3-5 bucks a piece.
killerklown91 7 months ago
@killerklown91 Depends on what you're buying, the only records from any time period I have that I got for under $10 was some singles vinyls. The lowest I ever got a full album of a vinyl was Ocean Eyes by Owl City for $10 and a few around that price range but a little more expensive that happened to be some old dub music releases from the 70's. Maybe because my collection mainly consists of electronic genres of music in general and they tend to be more expensive and hard to get.
squezey1 7 months ago
@squezey1 That's what I mean though. Big bands charge that much for vinyl.
I was talking about manufacturing them. And yeah your right though, it does depend on where you get them. Some bands release super limited quantities of them and charge more then the basic unit price. I usually buy LPs for 5 bucks, EPs for around 2-4.
killerklown91 7 months ago
My left ear really enjoyed this.

heres the thing Vinyl never died and it never will. while i do love digital it doesn't sound nearly as good as analog vinyl. listening to vinyl makes you experience music, makes you feel it. spinning a record is just relaxing and fun. Long Live Vinyl.

@C815richard Vinyl really brings music to life because it is almost completely organic, the music just travels from some cut out track in a surface and into a speaker. That's what I love about it.

TRJ22487ISDEAD 8 months ago
@TRJ22487ISDEAD How about listening to some real music instead of some pop culture garbage? Anything but that stuff, come on there is so much more out there than the "top artists". It is obviously risky for some pop artist to release their stuff on vinyl because most of their fanbase probably doesn't even know what one is.
squezey1 7 months ago
@squezey1 I build my album collection full of records with other people in mind. I try to have at least one record that specific people I can think of will enjoy when they come over. But you do realize music is AN OPINION, a PREFERENCE right? That would be like me saying "Ohh, this chicken is delicious" and you rip it off my plate and say "Steak is the correct meal to eat".
Anyway, the latest albums I have gotten are Neon Trees Habits, and Owl City Ocean Eyes. Loved them both.
TRJ22487ISDEAD 7 months ago
@TRJ22487ISDEAD lmao, and I just wrote that without realizing that you had just bought Ocean Eyes as well! Look....just don't be so judgmental towards people. Not all of the top artists are bad. People need to ease up and accept the new artists with the old. I bought my girlfriend Adele - 21 a month or so ago, and I'm lucky to listen to my own record without her begging to put Adele on! You should see how genuinely happy she gets...
TRJ22487ISDEAD 7 months ago
@squezey1 But if you would like to know my collection is truly dominated with Beatles and Police albums. A combined 16, 12 Beatles with my most valuable being the mono version of Magical Mystery Tour.
TRJ22487ISDEAD 7 months ago
@squezey1 and yeah you are obviously oh so right about the fanbases of many artists having no idea what a record player even is, thus making it a leap of faith to produce an LP. But it sure is fun to make people realize, "Holy crap, they still make those!"...you can see it just sparks an interest in everyone's eyes when they see new material on what they thought was a dead format. People have a misconception of records being old, obsolete, and dirty, but they are wonderful!
TRJ22487ISDEAD 7 months ago
18yrs old and i nedd i new player so i will buy them i love the sound
mowat440 8 months ago
It's funny though, I'll buy things on record that I NEVER would have bought otherwise. I have the latest album from Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, and never would have bought those, but something about a record changes everything. There is charm in a double LP that a CD can never have. Plus I've noticed many pop vinyls of the last 15 years have become EXTREMELY rare and valuable....look up the Spice Girls Spice World for instance....there may be money in some of these soon enough...
TRJ22487ISDEAD 8 months ago
Good to see I'm not the only one with this huge problem...I'm 24 and spend all of my extra money on records week after week! I only bought my player 60 days ago and I'm already up to over 40 albums, many of them brand new at $20-30 each, plus my Dad is going to be giving me all of his 45's from the 60's....wish I never grew up on CD's and MP3's, though I haven't bought one of either in nearly a decade!

y is it tht the only ppl who comment are totally in favor of vinyl. dont get me wrong i like vinyl too, but its not as black nd wite as ppl r makin it seem. both have advantages nd disadvantages, but 4 sum reason ppl think tht it is right to compare a turntable with amazing speakers to an ipod with crappy headphones. if u listen 2 an lp, ep or watever piece of vinyl u want 2 listen 2 thru ipod headphones nd an ipod thru amazing speakers, ur opinions wud b the exact opposite of wat they are
MrP00sy 1 year ago
@MrP00sy The frequency response of an ipod is inferior to even a low end turntable. My $30 cartridge gets a frequency response of 25-27,000 hz. An ipod gets around 20-20,000 hz at best. It probably gets up to 16,000 hz with compressed audio.
Even on the best speakers, the ipod cant get the higher frequencies.
Ipods are portable, turntables are for serious audiophile listening. The two are nowhere near the same, and are practically incomparable. Like you said, they have their +'s and -'s.
0UT3RL1M1T5 1 year ago
@0UT3RL1M1T5 but most people cant really hear much above 20,000 hz, but its comforting to know u can go tht extra length just in case. also, you probably wud only rly kno about this if ur a dj but wats ur opinion on DVS (digital vinyl system), things like serato scratch live nd traktor scratch?
MrP00sy 1 year ago
@MrP00sy I don't know much about that stuff, but I googled digital vinyl system, and it seems pretty cool. Is it software? If so, then I think it is practical and what not, but in my opinion, a real dj has to do at least some real vinyl stuff. Digital loops and stuff are nice and it really doesn't require skill, I'm sure, but the real "dj work" (scratching, and basically anything else) is what makes it awesome. And I think those other things are scratch records, they are pretty neat as well.

toth1971 1 year ago
@0UT3RL1M1T5 interesting start 4 a debate. your 4th point i totally agree with nd have nothing against, but ur last 4 points im not so sure about. ya the crappy headphones tht come with an ipod have about the lamest, nd crappiest sound quality ever, bad frequency response, but if u havnt noticed, most ppl either connect their ipods 2 decent speakers, or get better headphones. as for realism, i dont see how music playin on an ipod is any less 'real' than on vinyl. warm sound, depend on speakers
MrP00sy 1 year ago
@0UT3RL1M1T5 of course vinyl is meant 2 play sound.....so are ipods.

@maplecreekjunction
So not true, even a good pressed rock album sounds better on a turntable. I've put it to the test on my quality set and the vinyl sounds so much deeper and more dynamic (very important in rock music if you ask me) then the CD. It all depends on quality of the turntable as well of course.
