This is an old urban myth. They only take these at foundations bacause they are tired of hearing it. They sell the alum as scrap and donate the money. It's better than nothing, but for your time, just donate the $2 per pound they get for them.

#1- people would much rather donate a tab than a $ donation (or full can, for that matter)

#2- They are easy to find and collect.

#3- every dime helps, and a $1 is better than nothing at all.
