You didn't even have to compare them. When will the Americans understand that Brits simply do it better? And when will the Americans do something on their own without having to steal brilliant ideas from the UK? NOBODY will ever touch John Simm. Or Philip Glenister. Or Liz White.
i tried to watch both versions, i loved my home version (uk) wanted to get into the US version, but i lost the will to do so after 2 episodes, although in episode 1 the towers being there was a major OMG moment.
LoM Uk ended just right, and John Simm has gone on to do equally good stuff, its like faulty towers do enough and stop, unlike Lost , do too much and fade into nothing
Whether it was good or bad, the US version of Life On Mars Coul NOT be the same as the British show, they're based in cultures which although similar are also very different. I know you lot already know this, but I thought I'd mention it :)
And as I haven't seen the US version, I can't really comment on it, except for the godawful ending.
Well of course the answer is simple - Sam is better than Sam by about a million miles. Sam is portrayed convincingly wheras Sam is just not believable at all. I love Sam and I really can't stand Sam. See, I told you it was simple.
Just from the clips it's gotta be British Sam. I've only watched UK Life on Mars and wouldn't taint it by watching the other version. I heard about the ending and ...what a load of old BS.
Would love to see a Gene Hunt version, cos he's the man!
Simm wins. I watched both, Simm won it, kinda felt like 99% of the viewers hated the US ending over the UK version...that and it just felt like the characters were really real and how it genuinelly sucked you in as a viewer.
I love this so much. Even though yes, it is from the rejected pilot, it still proves that O'Mara is rubbish compared to Simm.
And I will never understand the American justification of not being able to "relate" to the British version so needing one of their own. As a 20-something Aussie I am unable to relate to either the era or the area, but using this wonderful thing called imagination and an open mind I can appreciate the brilliance of LoMUK (and the pure crap of LoMUSA).
i know what the problem was. If they had shown the bbc version in america, it would be "too filthy" for the poor people. There would be too much cussing, too much violence and so on and so forth. so they made a completely crap version of the same series, only less "filthy" for the americans
Simmy-sam wins hands down and before anyone says it I have seen the new version of the us lom but simmy-sam is just so much better than both us sams and so is philip glenster
I'll clear up my comments. As a Police Officer here in the US (East Coast) I can relate to the US/NY version better, living through the 70's. As for the BBC, I read it was only 8 shows, so I stand corrected(thank you). I really like Both versions, I tend to lean towards the nostalgia in the NY City, NYPD. I am glad they went w/NY instead of LA like in the Original Pilot.
I am from the US & enjoy BOTH. The BBC version is only 8 shows which doesn't give to much time to tell a story. It was more like a Mini-series. The US version will go 17 shows now that ABS has cancelled it. They were able to tell more stories & work slower towards Sam & Annies growing relationship. I just hope the US version ends the same way the BBC version did. Both shows are great. They are set in different lands which will make them different. It is easier for US to relate to NY than England
Actually, the BBC version ran for 16 episodes, and if you include the fact that their episodes lasted for 58 minutes as opposed to the American 42, the BBC version lasted longer. Besides, this video is based on the LA pilot, which was absolute pants, compared to the NY version that was generic enough not to be either pants or brilliant. And this is coming from a Norwegian who apparently shouldn't be able to relate to either shows, as I don't live in either country. And wasn't born 36 years ago.
Not that I wasn't touched by the BBC LoM, but here are points in favor of giving LoM USA a chance
a. Annie Norris has a very well executed character arc
b. No creepy t.v. girl
c. The story is not only diverging from the BBC one but it's doing it well (ie. side characters appear in scenes without Sam being there suggesting they do have lives apart from his psyche and aries project)
d. Our Sam won't leave the show after two seasons forcing them to wrap it up before the storytellers are ready to
I'll have you know that the creepy Test Card Girl was my favorite on the show.
Also, the story was over after two seasons, it put way too much strain on John Simm (he was in every single scene) and your show got cancelled halfway through the first season, so they do have to wrap it up before they're done.
For God's sake, are you blind or what? It's bad enough that Americans are taking over almost every British show, you have to add by insulting the BBC version!
And F.Y.I., Sam Tyler IS the main character! Therefore, it only makes sense that the story revolves around him.
B. 'Creepy' Test Card Girl is key, but it's a pop cultural thing.
C. Sam has to appear in every scene as it is his consciousness creating this non-reality. Nothing exists outside his experience. That's the whole point. Anything else undermines it.
D. Always leave them wanting more - move onto Phase 2 - Ashes to Ashes (even though I find Alex a bit too knowing about what's going on, preferred Tyler's confused desperation).
Is it just me or were clips from the unaired pilot used, you know before they put effort into the script and used the original material as a springboard into awesomeness?
I agree, John Simm is a fantastic actor, Jason O'Mara is good, and charming, but not nearly as great as Simm. One thing though, O'Mara isn't american, he's Irish :)
and with John Barrowman and (i've forgotten her name) singing the song, John Simm is a spectacular captivating actor, and the other guy well... there's no word to explain him, lets just say not good
Loved the video, but for pete's sake, certain commenters... imatation is the highest form of flattery. Why does the U.S. version have to be denounced before it even gets off the ground just because the original was so good?
Life on Mars WAS my favorite show while it ran... and then it ended. That made me sad. This show meant a lot to me as well. But I'm sorry, I just don't see how doing a remake can take it away from me or anyone else. It doesn't affect it at all. The US version isn't the "new" Life on Mars, it's a different Life on Mars. I have yet to hear ANYONE say it was better than the original, but if someone thinks it is, so what? Opinions differ.
Well on the lom uk vids here on youtube the americans are being very offensive saying brits are horrible and have funny teeth and it does affect it it just shows that anyone can make and its not an original idea anymore. it does take it away coz the us start talking about their version and push the uk version asided without giving a second thought
Um. I'm not entirely sure what you're saying here. You might want to clean up your run-on sentences a bit. I haven't actually seen many Americans making offensive comments on the LOM-UK vids I've watched, although naturally there are idiots commenting on every vid so I'm sure they are there... but you should ignore them, because they are idiots. It was still an original idea; BBC still did it first and ABC did it a bit differently.
Also, most people I know haven't even heard of the UK version, because it wasn't broadcast on any major networks. The only reason I know about it was because I happened to catch the pilot (and fell in love with it) on BBC America, which is part of my mom's basic cable package. That channel is not a part of most cheaper cable packages (like mine). One reason I was happy about LOM-US was that it would give Americans an opportunity to hear about LOM-UK (and it has).
As an American I like both versions!! I relate to NYPD better since I am a P.O. in the states. I find the US version goes in a different direction and I HATED the US ending, but like the UK ending. Why wouldn't we copy it? GREAT concept, & if it was not for youtube, I would of never known yours existed!!! As for making fun of Brits, I have not seen that. I would not respect anyone for doing that, since YOU are our best friends. Peace & Love!!
Bloody brilliant! Truer words were never spoken! The American version looks like it won't go for a full series! I'm not sure how they can stretch the concept out enough for the length of an American T.V. Show or dumb it down enough for American audiences.
Americans aren't so dumb as all that. Stop being such a limey snob. The American version actually isn't that bad, just tailored to an American audience. Give it a chance before you knock it.
we know americans aren't dumb and I know it isn't that bad I've seen it but taking another countries shows and remaking them into us versions show the us can't understand other countries cultures the rest of the world watches american shows so why can't the us watch the uk version?
I'm dreading the american version (can you say...Viva Laughlin...?) but this was pure untainted genius XD!!!!!!! Don't worry Simm-Sammy, nobody will ever out pretty-cry you :p Great idea, great vid :D! Thanks for postin' ^.^ (Bonus points for using the John Barrowman inclusive version of this song :o!)
