Very moving! The spooky music, random disturbing images. Nicely done. But I am still far from convinced of this so called "premise 3" thing. Just because this is the way that our modern industrial system does work, does not mean it is the only way it can work.
nature, the natural selection process is indistinguishable from violence. given time the planet will be completely destroyed, either by the impact of a large object, or the sun fizzling out. why worship the dirt, humus, organic matter, which is nothing more that matter so tortured by metabolisms that it yields no more energy. civilization =/= mass society. one has a future, the other does not.
If we live such "kick ass lives" why is civilization on anti-depressants? Why do we need therapists to help us be happy? Why does everybody complain about their job? Why are the people on "The Real World" always fighting? Why do we buy iPods when a new one is just going to come out? Why is processed industrial food the culprit of obesity? Looks like we're absolutely miserable.
That depends on how narrowly you define "us." Prevent the oil from moving from under dessert sands to that chainsaw, and that tree doesn't die, along with all the creatures for which it is home. Taking a broader view of us, most of us are dead already. How many more will die before this culture stops, by our actions or its own.
quite so, quite so.. i had deduced from context that rvb was writing about the human population,.. and for that group i find it misleading to suggest there is any way we will end up supporting 7 billion humans. (or that we should try) outside of that,.. there is little doubt that the culture of civilization ending will likely mean an explosion of life generally across the biomass.. the end to a reign of widely distributed violence and death. "we" will be better for it, yes.
wars and economy is undermined, everyone will feel less desperate, people would still be free to make money, it just becomes impossible to starve for lack of it.
With those things in place, humanity will take care of the rest.
now we have a clear target.
how do we get there? by the most rational means possible.
i leave that to you, but I recommend by making use of the principles of the 8 circuits (see RAWilson)
bzp1990: it has nothing to do with us being human and has everything to do with us being dehumanized through the process of civilization. No need to feel ashamed, but plenty of need to fight back against a system that is making us all insane.
a "requirement"? humans and other animals have lived "kick ass lives" for eons...
besides, disrupting the 'kick ass lives' of the whole rest of the biosphere in order to live lives of fashionable consumption for a relatively short UNsustainable period, is hardly 'kick ass'.. for most of the living AND human world it is quite 'suck-ass.'
no one would be more pleased than i if it were impossible for this computer to exist, until then i have ZERO interest in spiritual purity.
of course not. if we loved our land and our bodies we wouldn't rip metal out of the earth to build computers and we wouldn't burn out our eyes by staring at a grid of lights all day. "kick ass lives" are really just long, drawn-out death.

Right. The solution, according to Jensen, is to tear it (civilization) down and to replace it with ... what? Jensen's two-volume tirade against "iindustrial civilzation" is long on vitriol, but woefully short on solutions. Anyone who takes seriously Jensen's prescription for what ails us ought to have his head shrunk.
wat. Jensen is right, civilization is unsustainable. if we don't tear it down it will tear itself down. I do disagree with his "pull up asphault and grow gardens" idea becuase it's just building another civilisation. The point is survive, and have fun and be honest while you do it. If that honesty involves blowing up a dam, great!
@21288003771215 If I can politely ask, how is it building another civilization? He proposes we live alongside animals, not drive them out so we can live peacefully in the suburbs. When was the last time civilized humans allowed wild wolves and deer to peacefully walk our streets and parks? We would immediately call the police to shoot or take them away. As if we OWN the place. As if we are ENTITLED. Humans over animals. Whites over blacks. Rich over poor. Men over woman.
Watching this video i have 2 say it put tears in my eyes, i feel ashamed of being a human being because us as humans actualy did this, some may not have done this act but even worse we did nothing 2 stop it.....we need 2 start a world wide campaign RIGHT NOW im trying to convince my friends to stop wearning make up thats tested on animals,,tell me what else can i do we need 2 do somthing....ps i just subedi saw ur vid on zzz333 channel
thank you for watching it,.. it is a powerful book, to be sure.. the more persons who might see some answers here (or at least the right questions) the better. i wish i could get this book to everyone who was halfway curious.
In times of despair, this is the kind of stuff that works for me to get back on my feet and start kickin butts again. Thanks for sharing this great piece of work.
very disturbing...what's even more disturbing is that most people would quetion the validity of this premise. if ever faced with someone questioning it, this would be a perfect vid to show them. respect!
i would like to know how they would make the argument ..before seeing it, and afterwords.. as i mentioned elsewhere this 5 minutes just barely scratches the surface.. but it does that at least, picks at the wound we are all taught to forget.
commercial media sells audiences to advertisers, the customer is corporate and he likes his audiences soft and baited, eager to fill the void with daydreams about fashionable consumption.
much thanks sister cheri, very pleased that you are making videos as well.. you are relentless, we need more relentless.
agreed in part,.. but a fundamental step in 'fixing' it is just leaving it alone.. just stop breaking it! if we can succeed in just that much then perhaps we might have the confidence and energy for reparation.
i tried to pick the normal everyday hum of violence for footage.. rather than cataclysmic occasions.. so it could not be argued as extraordinary, or as hyperbole.
as a result you pick any moment of the day and this is what is happening.
thank you.. that was the idea right? and much of that violence is not depicted here.. sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse.. for which footage would be inappropriate..
"good god man" --i had considered a PTSD warning of some kind.. but couldn't rationalize it.. this video could have been a lot 'worse' in that respect.
and sure.. because this is so much a participatory system.. intellectually and economically.. (it depends in part in our believe that it exists, and in part our complicit labor.) 'contemplate' recession ..is about considering the simpler ways.. about not doing it like 'this' anymore. (see video) and in the mean time, as a strategy that anyone one can participate in, stop believing, stop contributing to the economic system to the extent possible for you. general strike. thx again.

It really wouldn't be such a bad thing if most of us did die, unfortunatly.
amyntazoe 1 year ago
The premise should use a more accurate word than "violence" because the world is based on violence. We and every other animal would die without it.

I hope you enjoy the house you live in, the freedoms you have become accustomed to, and ease at which you have lived your life.
These clips (exept the animal cruelty) are a requirement for us to live such kick ass lives.
Do you think the computer you are reading this on would be possible if it were not for the very clips shown here?
