I want my three minutes back, you bastard. What a complete waste of time. I'm making a note of VirtualTennisAcademy so the internet doesn't spend any more bandwidth on this garbage.
I was losing to pushers n sick of it. Worst is doubles with 2 pushers I just stand n watch moonballs. so I change my style to beat them.

I play people who push but with slice on both forehand and backhand. Would you apply the same principles of attack? The ball bounces lower so it can be difficult to take early.
@surfjabroni instead of trying to attack needlessly off every single serve like the video says, try mixing in higher balls, the higher the ball is the harder it is to hit an effective slice...going for winners off the serve is fine, just make sure you pick and choose when you attack.
The way pushers win is by you trying to go for winners. Agreed you need to take time away, but by going for early winners, you just played right into their hands.

FuzzyYellowBalls has a much better answer, but actually doing it takes some time to learn. Essentially it's this: using "modern" footwork that today's pros use(open stance, moving while hitting), instead of classic footwork that McEnroe and Connors used (closed, stationary) allows you to generate more pace without swinging harder. The additional pace (note: but with control) causes the pusher to leave balls short and opens up easy winners.
Point 1: Being aggressive on a weak serve, while a good thing, isn't specific to pushers and doesn't make sense as a stand alone video.
Point 2: Defensive plays, especially good hard slices, are not "pushing".
Point 3: Pushers are only effective if they can land the ball back deep, so focus on control, especially using topspin. Try to dominate the player's backhand. Take a couple steps in. The goal is to get a short ball at the service line and then hit a winner.
good information, but what happens if the pusher can serve alot of "weak" serves at around knee level height where the ball dies or slices low and does not bounce up any where near shoulder level?
All the tips in this video are valid, but most of them are extremely idealistic. Trying to hit winners, and doing so with a positive frequency, is always a good way to end the point. However, trying to hit winners isn't always the best plan, especially considering that most people can't/won't risk it/don't implement it into their game-plan as frequently as they should/can.
Next time, try and proffer the viewers something that everybody can do without hurting their own game.

You're better off trying to out-push a pusher. And to all of you bitching about playing pushers, whether you like it or not, pushers win matches. Even at the college level.

this is how to beat a pusher, not a blind, deaf creature right? its not true that most pushers have weak serves, and its easy to hit that back. and that is terrible advice.

the players that I have seen effective against really good pushers are good at angles. You have to use angles and I like bringing them to the net. the majority of pushers hate the net. then you can lob or better yet pass because good pushers can chase down lobs. I don't know about you guys but when you see a pusher, most of them are around 50+ years old... I've never play with a pusher around 18-40yr old before, because all of them wanted to improve their game, they want to hit winner, but unlike a pusher they just wanted to push the ball over the net they just play safe, that is why they never improve their game.
Solution: hit a winner. If I had hit a winner off every second serve for sure I would have been top hundred. I think when you play a pusher you have got be mentally prepared to be in a battle, acknowledge the fact that rallies are going to be that bit longer and choose
that's how t be a pusher...hit a winner down the line. now why didn't I think of that. also if you watch the shot hit down the line....he could have reached and pushed it back. pushing is the best tactic there is. Players below college and pros should try and become one and work on conditioning to outlast your opponent.
dear tennismike, to certain extent I would agree with you to build stamina and outlast your so-called pushers.I've seen many times that good pushers caused nightmare to the attacking players who are not patience enough to sustain the rallies.Pushers normally play to elicit mistakes on the other players to commit. They are better percentage players and more often than not able to drive the better opponent crazy with their high topspin shots on both flanks .
the only time i push is when im tired as hell or playing someone with massive massive strokes and serves. if anything opens up when im pushing i always just jack my forehand and hit it flat as hell it throws off their game sooo much
Im a pusher! hehe. people hate playing me. cuz im so consistent and i get every ball in. the only people that can beat me are people that hit a vollegy against me that i cannont get. Yet i can run fast. but people at the net that are tell do usually well against me.
i hate pushers id destroy you id throw my first serve 100mph out wide and if you get to it id follow up with a drop shot and then i would pummel the ball down the line or cross court. i have insane court speed. people who attack correctly can defeat a pusher everytime.
dear mixmastapwn...it's easier said than done if you were to play against the pushers who have already develop their game into counter-punchers...be careful some pushers are also hidden counter pounchers.
ive played a ton of pushers mostly from miami prep schools. i control most the rallies it helps being able to hit a good shot with all grips. when it comes to pushers i tend to put more bite on the ball so i get a quicker jumping spin. i change up how much i brush the ball on almost every shot so they cant feel comfortable.
to beat a pusher move thm forward and back, they love to just stand in the back of the court and wait for balls to come to thm so all u have to is wait for ur opportunity to unload on a short ball.
buy winning ugly by brad gilbert exelent book and interesting he bring you the tool to beat pushers . and remmember if you are a godd tennis player pusher tecnicques is not bad using in smart way not all time and you see you star win more
really?? you should make that pusher work put spin and hit it cross court and chip and charge! alot! that really helps for those guys its easy beating just get hte right tactics xD
I agree this is BS. Hit a winner down the line.. give me a break. there are all different types of players and pushers. I think.. if you can bring them to the net. then hit a passing shot. most pushers don't like being at the net but if they do.
it's more difficult. you can also lob them. get brad gilbert's book.. it's clearer and it cost way less than thing probably does.
yea that's what i also do but they tend to give up on dropshots so its easy and if they do then just wait for them to retreat or just use a passing shot i usually scare them by hitting flat and whenever i drop shot it they dont try to get it or they try to go back to the base line as soon as possible haha xD
good suggestion. but the smart pushers always expect us to attack their backhand and will be prepared to defend the backhand flank all the time. They may reply with the cross court lob high enough to neutralize your offense and the even smarter one would serve to your backhand instead of forehand. In other words to beat pushers you have must the weapons- powerful forehand, backhand, volley and overhead.Otherwise you can't neutralize the pushers. Pushers are no pushovers .
i only push the ball when i go out wide and i have to stretch, id rather hit more of a lob when stretching for a ball then taking my chance and hitting a running hard forehand or backhand.
my coach tells me that you should stay tolerant, these are his steps
1: shoot your shots with length
2: if pusher looses length close to the service line move him around
3: inside the service, attack.
he told me that players make silly mistakes choosing wrong shots at the wrong time, for example trying to hit a winner from the baseline on a lob ball or attacking on number 2. before i always lost against pushers but i use these steps and i learnt how to be more tolerant on the court and win :)
thats all well and good but pushers also move way better than anyone else. they could easily anticipate and get to an up the line return. plus, you didnt say anything about getting to the net? i would rely on getting to the net way more than just hoping they have a bad serve
This tip does not help unless your playing like community tennis. Pushers play a c consistent game and that does not mean they have a weak serve. Most of the time they have a nice kicker or slice that starts the point on thier terms.
I play 3.5 tennis and so many people have problem with 3/4 pace shots and i using this from win tournament is not that bad push ball this incrise your defence and footwork this is very important in tennis
@monthejoe Actually I just beat a pusher in a high school league match 6-0, 6-0. My serve is the best part of my game so he didn't even return one of my serves and than his serve was a tap and I came up and killed. I did have quite a few unforced errors on his service games, but I ended up winning most of them 40-30.
@DillonSinghBasi You played a crap player, not a "pusher". Good pushers hit accurate serves and accurate flat ground strokes into the corners, then they push a soft flat ball that lands inside the service box and barely leaves the ground, so you have to run forward and make a fool of yourself. It's very difficult to beat a good pusher (you have to overpower them), but it is a defining moment in your life when you do.
everybody who has hard penetrating groundstrokes has no problem with pushers,
i only use my westerngrip forehand, because my backhand is weaker and the pushergroundsstrokes are slow so i can use my forehand thats my weapon- sometimes i am not going only for winners, i let the pusher run from side to side until he has no stamina- that is the way i am showing him how bad he is playing tennis
IS not that simple ;they have a diferent strategis and that return no funtion it,Because the pusher's have weak serve and pass it to slow in to the net;the posivilities to make a mistake is more then win this shot and you cant heat a winner; you need to up this weak serve and not heat a winner is not that simple the anwers is focus; and they style of play force you to hit better shots and more consistas building points is the strategi not a quick winner
the secret is bilding poin force him to run to much ,and push him to be trouble in the cort ,remmember bild this winner, dont tried to fast if your try to fast winner against the pusher your be inconsistad againt him and for him is very simple the game for him turn boring because your gift the set
you don't know anything about tennis do you? Gael Monfils is a pusher and he has had a succesful season on the ATP this year. Guy even went to the semis at RG.
WTF? Like Aodaliyah said, that's not a pusher if you can hit a winner so easily against them.
And you don't need special tips or a new game to beat a pusher. The only thing wrong, is that your game stinks. Improve your shots and consistency. That's the true way to beat a pusher.
one player in my team has a good forehand, backhand, serve- but sometimes he plays the pushergame- he makes no errors and the balls are landing between 1 meter before the baseline, everybody who wants to hit on every shot winners loses.
a solid slice, moonballs, mental strengh, stamina let the pusher lose
It is a good tactic without knowing i was playing a pusher i dominated his serve hitting winners on the second serve and won 6-1 6-0 then played him again months later played shocking and was ill but i didn't attack and he won 6-4 7-6, errors will happen but it has to be done if you want to win, and pushers aren't bad players look at canas for christ sake! Pushers are fast and consistent nothing wrong with it if they can win like that so be it but i hate moon ball tennis.
i wuld say volleying is the bast way. Strong serve followed by a volley or sliced shots in either corner before appraoching the net. In the video, he's asking you to hit a winner - therefore going to be inconsistant, and in the hardest direction. There is less room for error by taking the winner down the line rather than cross court.
An easy way to beat a pusher is run him up and down the court, slice to his back hand deep, or fairly short, and keep it low, this gives you tons of opportunites after he hits it because it puts tons of pressure on the opponent it is most likely he will not hit a very good ball, then hit good angle shots.
haha... the problem with pushers is that they force you to go for big, inconsistent shots like the one in the video.. the problem is that they would get that shot back
thats true men is very dificult to hit a winner against a pusher for me the best way is play in the same mecanism there game ,be consistant and wait the golden oportunity to atack him, chage the velocity of the ball and the most important dont try a quick winner this is the error, for another, people be relaxing and wait this winner and you see the pusher have problems, because your wait for atack and he wait to yo comite and error and that force him to lose
the only way to be a pusher is patience and controlled agressive play. Perhaps everyone should trying taking the ball early or playing a lob back and then coming in mid court and hit a swinger. But it takes skill. Not everyone has that.
thats horrible advice. its not like the pusher couldnt just hit that back. stupid old fucking man. yeah and im sure all pushers serve the ball like they are 8 years old.
In general it is very difficult to beat a good pusher. One advice that we give our junior players is to force the pusher to move to the net not on the pusher's term but on the opponent's term. So my advice against pushers - mix it up by occasionally hitting low short balls (like Federer likes to do against Hewitt) and therefore force the pusher into a situation where he might feel unconfortable - and that is with pushers very often at the net!
wow, great advice. hit winners! hmmm, i'll have to consider trying that. makes sense. I win every point where I hit a winner. I should just do that all the time.
that was the worst advice ever, do a winner down the line so he cant hit it back, ok there are millions of winners u can do that some ppl cant hit back, omg that was gay
I gotta agree with tennismike22, letting them make a mistake is the easiest way to win. If you hold out long enough against a player who is pushing the ball, they will crack and make a mistake, just make them move around a lot and don't let them get confortable. Also, anyone else find it funny that he let the shot go when a retarded chimp with one leg and an eye patch could have easily blasted that shot cross court for the win?
pusher suck ass because they aint got no game no technique and if u push it like the dude under mi comment can't handle a rally that's why u push it so he has no game
um, there is a difference in a counterpuncher and "pusher". I think you would discribe tennismike22 as a counterpuncher which is basically a developed, accepted version of a pusher and is perfectly good strategy. Brad Gilbert was a "pusher" but made it to be #4 in the world and beat most of the top ranked players of his time at least once. There is a difference in the "pusher style" (counterpunching) and being just a "pusher". And I think many people like to use "pusher" as an excuse for losing
I'm a 5.0 player. I push. I play this way because tennis is a game lost, not won. You can beat a majority of opponents through making them make the mistake. This summer I got back into the game and won or made it to the finals of four tournaments. Saying a strategy is hit a winner down the line, is like saying go up to the plate and hit a home run.
lol...this tactic is easier said than done. most pushers i know have a very weak serve that is short (close to the net) and bounces very low. almost like a drop serve. i am a 3.5-4.0 baseliner and i have a very hard time returning this type of serve with a put-away, down-the-line shot. either that or the pusher has a surprisingly big serve.
i just punish them at their backhands man. seriously, about 90% of my shots are deep to their backhand, and the other 10% is coming to the net and slamming it down their throat. hey, if they want to push then just find their weakest point and hit it over and over until they give up....but i will say this about pushers, they are very patient players
I agree with this advice about hitting to the weakness repeatedly - usually by hitting high bouncing shots to their backhands over and over again.
But I dont think pushers are patient, they just know of no other way to play than reacting to the other player's shots, usually by throwing back a floaty softball with a high margin for error over the net.
I used to have trouble with pushers, and I still hate playing them, because it can be tiring sometimes, but once you have a breathrough with one tough pusher, you will be ok from then on.
Now I always remind myself that they are reactionary players.....almost never proactive at all.
So really you are in control of the entire match when paying a pusher, just stay calm and execute your shots.
PS - Have you ever watched 2 pushers paying against each other? Oh my god.
@aerogami02 Hey I was wondering, I play high school tennis and my coach always has me play against pushers for challenge matches and I always lose to them. But he still keeps my high on the ladder because he knows I'm a good player. I seem to have trouble generating my own pace whenever I play against pushers and when I try to I just end up misshitting or hitting it way out.
I want my three minutes back, you bastard. What a complete waste of time. I'm making a note of VirtualTennisAcademy so the internet doesn't spend any more bandwidth on this garbage.

in order to hit a return down the line and not make mistakes, you need to be at a real high level of tennis .
so this advice isn't real good .
I gonna tell you all how to beat a pusher though :
move him around playing his style 2 or 3 balls and wait till you get a ez ball and go to the net. thats all there is to it .
if you approach the net well you will get a ez smash from a pusher .

yea that's what i also do but they tend to give up on dropshots so its easy and if they do then just wait for them to retreat or just use a passing shot i usually scare them by hitting flat and whenever i drop shot it they dont try to get it or they try to go back to the base line as soon as possible haha xD
sith211 2 years ago
good suggestion. but the smart pushers always expect us to attack their backhand and will be prepared to defend the backhand flank all the time. They may reply with the cross court lob high enough to neutralize your offense and the even smarter one would serve to your backhand instead of forehand. In other words to beat pushers you have must the weapons- powerful forehand, backhand, volley and overhead.Otherwise you can't neutralize the pushers. Pushers are no pushovers .

hes a good pusher in this video, he could beat a lot of people playing just like that
quest8899 2 years ago 2
i only push the ball when i go out wide and i have to stretch, id rather hit more of a lob when stretching for a ball then taking my chance and hitting a running hard forehand or backhand.
quest8899 2 years ago
my coach tells me that you should stay tolerant, these are his steps
1: shoot your shots with length
2: if pusher looses length close to the service line move him around
3: inside the service, attack.
he told me that players make silly mistakes choosing wrong shots at the wrong time, for example trying to hit a winner from the baseline on a lob ball or attacking on number 2. before i always lost against pushers but i use these steps and i learnt how to be more tolerant on the court and win :)

thanks for this vid since our high school league is like 100% of pushers :[ we've only had like 2 good games lol

pushers are annoyin. especially when you are in 10 and under.
Spencersports 3 years ago 3
thats all well and good but pushers also move way better than anyone else. they could easily anticipate and get to an up the line return. plus, you didnt say anything about getting to the net? i would rely on getting to the net way more than just hoping they have a bad serve
laxlover24 3 years ago
This tip does not help unless your playing like community tennis. Pushers play a c consistent game and that does not mean they have a weak serve. Most of the time they have a nice kicker or slice that starts the point on thier terms.

FinalFan0 3 years ago
Your advice for beating someone at tennis is to hit a winner from the service return? I'm sure no one has ever tried that.
monthejoe 3 years ago 18
@monthejoe Actually I just beat a pusher in a high school league match 6-0, 6-0. My serve is the best part of my game so he didn't even return one of my serves and than his serve was a tap and I came up and killed. I did have quite a few unforced errors on his service games, but I ended up winning most of them 40-30.
DillonSinghBasi 1 year ago
@DillonSinghBasi You played a crap player, not a "pusher". Good pushers hit accurate serves and accurate flat ground strokes into the corners, then they push a soft flat ball that lands inside the service box and barely leaves the ground, so you have to run forward and make a fool of yourself. It's very difficult to beat a good pusher (you have to overpower them), but it is a defining moment in your life when you do.
dodododa 9 months ago
everybody who has hard penetrating groundstrokes has no problem with pushers,
i only use my westerngrip forehand, because my backhand is weaker and the pushergroundsstrokes are slow so i can use my forehand thats my weapon- sometimes i am not going only for winners, i let the pusher run from side to side until he has no stamina- that is the way i am showing him how bad he is playing tennis
welsjager007 3 years ago
where's the rest of the 5 tips yo
kigga07 3 years ago
IS not that simple ;they have a diferent strategis and that return no funtion it,Because the pusher's have weak serve and pass it to slow in to the net;the posivilities to make a mistake is more then win this shot and you cant heat a winner; you need to up this weak serve and not heat a winner is not that simple the anwers is focus; and they style of play force you to hit better shots and more consistas building points is the strategi not a quick winner
darkmonsterjc 3 years ago
the secret is bilding poin force him to run to much ,and push him to be trouble in the cort ,remmember bild this winner, dont tried to fast if your try to fast winner against the pusher your be inconsistad againt him and for him is very simple the game for him turn boring because your gift the set

If you are a competitive player and you can't defeat a pusher...then you suck. Don't blame the opponent for beating you.
stpaul000 3 years ago
there's nothing wrong with being competitive. if you are too hasty then it will hurt you during the game
Maverick1892 3 years ago
you don't know anything about tennis do you? Gael Monfils is a pusher and he has had a succesful season on the ATP this year. Guy even went to the semis at RG.
guess all the pros he beat suck too.

PUSHERS ARE FUKN SUCKERS
hentaiby 3 years ago
WTF? Like Aodaliyah said, that's not a pusher if you can hit a winner so easily against them.
And you don't need special tips or a new game to beat a pusher. The only thing wrong, is that your game stinks. Improve your shots and consistency. That's the true way to beat a pusher.
PorkChops250 3 years ago

one player in my team has a good forehand, backhand, serve- but sometimes he plays the pushergame- he makes no errors and the balls are landing between 1 meter before the baseline, everybody who wants to hit on every shot winners loses.
a solid slice, moonballs, mental strengh, stamina let the pusher lose
welsjager007 3 years ago
that isnt a good tactic- who is able to hit on every return a winner?
and there are a lot of pushers who serve not bad- they serve and after the return they begin to push- many pushers are not bad tennisplayers!
welsjager007 3 years ago
It is a good tactic without knowing i was playing a pusher i dominated his serve hitting winners on the second serve and won 6-1 6-0 then played him again months later played shocking and was ill but i didn't attack and he won 6-4 7-6, errors will happen but it has to be done if you want to win, and pushers aren't bad players look at canas for christ sake! Pushers are fast and consistent nothing wrong with it if they can win like that so be it but i hate moon ball tennis.
daz45 3 years ago
man...i lost to a pusher in my first zat. T_T
TommyTom1394 3 years ago
i don't think he said 6 times enough. i found that the best way to beat a pusher is to take time away. wait for the bounce and hit flatter
blackbalv2 3 years ago
This is a joke right? If you can hit a winner that easily against a pusher, then they wouldn't be called a pusher.
Aodaliyah 3 years ago
The best way to beat a pusher is be a pusher against them, and the person who is in better shape will win!
appppppppple 3 years ago 2
i wuld say volleying is the bast way. Strong serve followed by a volley or sliced shots in either corner before appraoching the net. In the video, he's asking you to hit a winner - therefore going to be inconsistant, and in the hardest direction. There is less room for error by taking the winner down the line rather than cross court.
xchancerx 3 years ago 2
You said 6, this is only one.
An easy way to beat a pusher is run him up and down the court, slice to his back hand deep, or fairly short, and keep it low, this gives you tons of opportunites after he hits it because it puts tons of pressure on the opponent it is most likely he will not hit a very good ball, then hit good angle shots.
TheBBB 3 years ago
that totaly sucks. what happens if he gets it back?

brandonian13 3 years ago
haha... the problem with pushers is that they force you to go for big, inconsistent shots like the one in the video.. the problem is that they would get that shot back
Thatoutoftheloopkid 3 years ago
thats true men is very dificult to hit a winner against a pusher for me the best way is play in the same mecanism there game ,be consistant and wait the golden oportunity to atack him, chage the velocity of the ball and the most important dont try a quick winner this is the error, for another, people be relaxing and wait this winner and you see the pusher have problems, because your wait for atack and he wait to yo comite and error and that force him to lose
johnymaclao 3 years ago
the only way to be a pusher is patience and controlled agressive play. Perhaps everyone should trying taking the ball early or playing a lob back and then coming in mid court and hit a swinger. But it takes skill. Not everyone has that.
thesluu 3 years ago
thats horrible advice. its not like the pusher couldnt just hit that back. stupid old fucking man. yeah and im sure all pushers serve the ball like they are 8 years old.

Foolsaeon 4 years ago
wow, great advice. hit winners! hmmm, i'll have to consider trying that. makes sense. I win every point where I hit a winner. I should just do that all the time.
ihateuutube 4 years ago 21
that was the worst advice ever, do a winner down the line so he cant hit it back, ok there are millions of winners u can do that some ppl cant hit back, omg that was gay
TibxB0i 4 years ago 2
I gotta agree with tennismike22, letting them make a mistake is the easiest way to win. If you hold out long enough against a player who is pushing the ball, they will crack and make a mistake, just make them move around a lot and don't let them get confortable. Also, anyone else find it funny that he let the shot go when a retarded chimp with one leg and an eye patch could have easily blasted that shot cross court for the win?
panthersfan1 4 years ago
pushers suck
they push because they suck
they suck because they suck
their serves suck
their forehands suck
they suck

no u suck, u dont kno how to tame ur control and power so u prolly lose to pushers cuz they hit high and u hit too hard and it nets or out so stfu

you lot are a bunch of idiots. just play ridculously low spinning slices to prevent an easy return or play the dropshot and lob/pass tactic.

pusher suck ass because they aint got no game no technique and if u push it like the dude under mi comment can't handle a rally that's why u push it so he has no game
ZLenox 4 years ago
um, there is a difference in a counterpuncher and "pusher". And I think many people like to use "pusher" as an excuse for losing
leavemealone2006 4 years ago
I'm a 5.0 player. I push. I play this way because tennis is a game lost, not won. You can beat a majority of opponents through making them make the mistake. This summer I got back into the game and won or made it to the finals of four tournaments. Saying a strategy is hit a winner down the line, is like saying go up to the plate and hit a home run.
tennismike22 4 years ago
lol...this tactic is easier said than done. most pushers i know have a very weak serve that is short (close to the net) and bounces very low. almost like a drop serve. i am a 3.5-4.0 baseliner and i have a very hard time returning this type of serve with a put-away, down-the-line shot. either that or the pusher has a surprisingly big serve.
howardmorales 4 years ago
i just punish them at their backhands man. seriously, about 90% of my shots are deep to their backhand, and the other 10% is coming to the net and slamming it down their throat. hey, if they want to push then just find their weakest point and hit it over and over until they give up....but i will say this about pushers, they are very patient players
mark37701 4 years ago
I agree with this advice about hitting to the weakness repeatedly - usually by hitting high bouncing shots to their backhands over and over again.
But I dont think pushers are patient, they just know of no other way to play than reacting to the other player's shots, usually by throwing back a floaty softball with a high margin for error over the net.
I think YOU have to be patient to beat them.
aerogami02 3 years ago
