What's worse is that some of the jobs being "created" aren't real jobs but merely statistical "probabilities" based upon the "birth/death model". Frankly, one can't believe any published figures anymore.

But I do have a question. What would you recommend to the "average Joe" as a course of action (speaking fiscally) for the next year or so? I'm sure "save your money" will be part of the answer... but where? Banks? Funds? Metals? Under the mattress?

You have to remember they are kicking about 200k people off the unemployment rolls every month now. So, they are making the numbers look better, but in reality they are taking the last bit of income a lot of people have.

This means approx half a million people will be coming off of unemployment a month here soon b/c it was this time last year when we were losing so many jobs.

it's that fun little formula at work. It accounts for the number of citizens that are "available" for jobs... account for deaths, retirements, etc.

I remember a few months ago where the unemployment rate stayed the same and we lost 200,000 jobs, and I asked the same question.

My guess would be that this is the answer, but since the reported U3 numbers are enron accounting anyway....

The government either created artificial jobs with its bogus birth/death model accounting or more people dropped from the total pool of unemployed (meaning they gave up trying to find a job). Probably a little of both. You see, they have a few tricks at their disposal.

No worries - Uncle Sam will simply print more $. So even if unemployment go up to 35% - it's going to be OK. Uncle Sam will bail people out. Because the FED has a printing press and so long as ink and parer remain relatively low, printing more $ is no big deal!

There has been, as usual a lot of hiring for the holiday season. However many if not most of these jobs are will be just that, seasonal. This is likely to have had an impact on the our most recent jobs numbers.

Two more points:

First of all, there is probably not much truth to the 11,000 figure knowing we are dealing with "junk statistics" via "junk government."

Secondly, being the holiday season in America, most of the upswing is surely due to temp seasonal workers who will be back next month boosting the unemployment figures.

Only deluded fools in a "self-induced coma" think the crisis is over. It is still just beginning. The Fed only used delay tactics this year, just like in 2007 and 2008.

Well 11,000 is statistically insignificant so as far as im concerned the job losses have basically ended (at least for last month). 11,000 is only 200 per state or one person per town. So insignificant we could lose jobs at this rate for 5 years before anyone would notice.

Thank you Herr Berninger for your insight. The way I see it, retailers might be hiring because of the expectation of the Christmas holidays because historically more jobs are available during this time and that could account for the 0.2 percent drop in unemployment. It does not surprise me that the markets are so short sighted, because they are usually driven by herd behavior not cognition.

After the Christmas holidays I think we will see more unemployment. Already the malls are ghost malls and no one is shopping. I saw many more people shopping at Marshall's (discount store).

Horrible. I have a Bachelor's in Psychology and used to work with troubled youth (I was also going to be a probation officer and passed all the tests but then a "hiring freeze" happened). The facilities here in CA are shutting down due to lack of funding. It sucks when I can't find work and really dumb people have jobs. Doesn't make sense!!

im a teacher...i worked in residential treatment facilities...with emotionally disturbed kids....they are closing up like crazy, the number of beds contracted are fewer and fewer....i suspect that the only facilities open in the near future will be juvinile prisons...and facilities for salvagable kids will go by the wayside.

I don't know if credit affects getting all jobs. I had a semi-good job before and they checked my credit (I warned them my credit was not good). They did not have a problem with that; however, I do agree that in CA, the job situation is REALLY bad so yeah, good luck to anyone trying to find a job in CA.
