i love the fact that she uses food as a metaphor for music. Both are equally important, they fill us up, gives us comfort when we're sad, gives us energy and provides us with all the things we need in order to survive.

nplanet...what is bad music? i have been a musician all my life. i started by banging on pots as an infant. i began formal lessons at age 7. i have played in all kinds of bands - rock, jazz, bluegrass, blues, acoustic, electric, electronic and classical orchestras and gamelans. i play several instruments. i have a masters degree in music performance and am working on a phd in musicology. i like it all for listening and most for playing. there is no "bad" music - only music you don't understand.
While I agree there is no such thing as "bad" music, I do think that people's unrefined ears are taken advantage of by the music industry. When your musical pallette is unrefined/unstretched, you tend to accept the music you're fed. You can neurologically build your musical ear and appreciate music on a deeper level. But no, I don't think there's such a thing as "bad" music... but I'll certainly be the first to say Lada Gaga is insipid drivel!

I have to disagree. If music doesn't challenge intellectually, what's the point? I don't just mean it should be technically intricate but it should present a philosophical position. I don't think it's snobbery, it's just a belief that music is worth more than a superficial listen on an Ipod shuffle playlist.

We should recognize that things that are purely for entertainment are also valuable to people. That people should try to have a bit of everything in their lives and appreciate them for what they are.

I reckon a lot of people miss out more thoughtful creative music because they turn to outlets such commercial radio as a quick way of listening. nplanet...what is bad music? i have been a musician all my life. i started by banging on pots as an infant. i began formal lessons at age 7. i have played in all kinds of bands - rock, jazz, bluegrass, blues, acoustic, electric, electronic and classical orchestras and gamelans. i play several instruments. i have a masters degree in music performance and am working on a phd in musicology. i like it all for listening and most for playing. there is no "bad" music - only music you don't understand.

While I agree there is no such thing as "bad" music, I do think that people's unrefined ears are taken advantage of by the music industry. When your musical pallette is unrefined/unstretched, you tend to accept the music you're fed. You can neurologically build your musical ear and appreciate music on a deeper level. But no, I don't think there's such a thing as "bad" music... but I'll certainly be the first to say Lada Gaga is insipid drivel!
