I'm an Indian Classical musician as well as a drummer and guitarist... I think Anoushka Shankar is quite overrated (and btw for those of you that think the 11 minute piece is all, nope. Whole concerts last for about 2 hours with an interval in between. One artist, with accompaniment for two hours. Think about the next time you criticise it) Cheers guys :)
@Joliveerr I understand that you have your own opinions and taste on music, but seriously, there is no need to call ANY music "shit" considering that they are talented musicians in their own right. Did you honestly think you'd only be learning about popular music and rock for a two year music course?! Imagine how much stamina it takes to play a piece lasting 5 minutes let alone 11 minutes! If you don't like it, then don't say anything at all- learn some respect!
I'm forcing myself to put this on my ipod. It's coming straight off after the exam, though. Some of the others I might keep though (Moby, Something's Coming, Mozart, Chopin ect). I just really dislike this one for some reason.
I love Music and all, but this is just taking the piss, I can't imagine anyone who would sit there and play this shit for 11 minutes, 5 minutes maybe, but this just drags on, Just do the Jhala and fuck off, Kthx. <3
Who would play/ listen to this? Maybe people whose culture it is to play their music for their God who means a lot to them, or perhaps just because they love it, is who. Even though Eastern music sounds a little funny to our Western ears it doesn't mean that it's any less accomplished, beautiful or musical than anything we listen to. Anoushka plays sitar a million times better than pretty much any of the musicians in the charts can play theirs, and with so much more emotion and expression.
@TarrynWilliamsMusic It's great that you think in such a way I didn't say they wern't great musicians, they are in fairness. But to be honest it's 11 minutes long. I couldn't show my faith for 11 minutes straight :l perhaps I should respect this music/admire it, but I really really don't :') I'll stick to Miles Davis XD
I've just started my second year of GCSE music, and I've already lost my cd with all of the set works on it, I didn't expect to see this up here if I'm honest:')
Life saver!
anyone know when the change from the Alap to the Gat time is and then the time when it changes from Gat to the second Gat?
Fantastic. I am simply spellbound. The notes she is playing are so lively that these not only touch the mind and soul but paralyze the listener with its mesmerizing power and emotion.
@101theguitardude Something's coming sucks cock, and so does electric counterpoint. that moby song is piss-easy as well. This is far more interesting.
Shoenberg's Peripetie was one of the best pieces of music on the syllabus. I don't see why people don't like it, if you understand what's behind the sound, you'll love it.
If one of the three Rag desh songs come up in the exam, will they have the name of which one we are listening to at the top or will it just say 'Rag desh'?
If this comes up as an essay question, I will do the other essay question NO MATTER what it is, even if its peripetie or Yiri or something. I just can't remember any of the six billion names of all the different things involved in rag desh. I did music GCSE to play my instrument, not learn a different language.
@TheLOLROFLMAOMG They are the structures of the Raga, but with the three set pieces, just understand what structure they're in. This one above playing uses the Alap (slow, first part of the song) and then Gat 1 and Gat 2. A gat is without a vocal singer, and a Bandish is WITH a vocal singer. Think, Bandish, 'Band', when people are in a band they usually sing.
@087Seb well, its not really long enough to play on its own, but i agree, listening to Five Pieces for Orchestra as half of a concert would be unbearable...
@087Seb so true how the hell do people get through it, I bet all the kids wear hats so they can listen to their ipods underneath. Wot I can't believe is that people actually like this music
@Dragoncourtjr Me to all I wanna do is play my piano and drums, some of the peices are sooooo annoying. But it always makes it better when ure music teacher pretends to sing in a womans voice and acts like a gay boy wit turrets
I jst hope that any questions they have on regdesh will b about the history otherwise I'm dead meat.
