Cajjer - The crowd for this was 63,000 (about 10,000 Sunderland I believe). I am certain this was not beaten before Old Trafford was redeveloped. I went to the next games between us 77/8, at Old T when Bill Garner scored and 2.2 at The Bridge, I remember Gordon Hill's last min. pen. Both all ticket after our respective affairs at Norwich/Charlton. Bring back British Rail!
As much as I hate Man Utd I have to say that this is the most my most memorable match on MOTD. Two big clubs in Div 2, that's what it's all about, fuck winning and the prem league, terraces, real ends, real fans........ Still a s/t holder but tootball today is shit!
60,000 for a Second Division game. Awesome. Mind you, it was between the two leading promotion contenders. Sunderland eventually missed out in fourth place, with United not surprisingly Champs. Still, this was a great game.
highest averages crowd in whole country from division 2.
highest average crowds for most of them 26 years without a title but the ABUs dont like to mention this

But Sunderland made up for disapointment of missing out in 74-75 by going up themselves as champs following season.
